2nd, 3rd and 4th faceup,

Sep 24, 2018

    1. Hi,

I recently received my very first BJD, a feeple60 Chloe (unnamed yet.. still deciding), and have done my own faceup. I am completely new to the BJD hobby and her sleeping head faceup was my 3rd ever faceup and her normal face was my 4th ever faceup. So please be mindful I am a complete newbie when critiquing my work hehe xD, but do critique if there is something that I cam improve on I am completely open to constructive criticism.

I am not completely happy with my Chloe's normal head faceup. So I want to redo it... there's just something about the eyes that don't feel right to me. I'm not sure what it is but she looks overly surprised.... is it the eyebrows or the eyeballs? Also her eyes balls seem a little dark...is my eyeliner too dark or is it just a lighting issue? I just can't quite figure it out so that I know what to do differently for my next faceup attempt.

Here are pictures of my Chloe Normal Head (4th faceup) and my Chloe Sleeping head (3rd attempt).

Here is also a photo of my 1st and 2nd faceups, they were mainly my practice faceup that I did on a practice doll head I have.

    3. What an amazing job! I can’t believe these are only your first few faceups!
I could do a million and they wouldn’t be anywhere near as good as yours!

    5. I like your style for down eyelashes a lot!
for the first doll is a little too much to me, it kind reminds me of those japaneses gyarus, but in the sleepy faceplate is good and I thought it was aboslutely adorable in the other doll.
Anyway, if you lived close I would totally send my doll to you make the face up cause your eyebrows are beautiful!

    6. Wow I wish my third or fourth (or even 23rd or 4th!) looked that good! Your work is beautifully consistent, both faceplates look like the same girl and the blushing on her cheeks and lips is lovely. The eyeballs looking dark could be because they are big irises in quite a dark colour. If you haven't reached the point yet where you have a hoard of eyeballs (everyone does that, right?) it might be worth getting a couple of pairs of cheap acrylics just to see how different colours and sizes look. Her lower lashes are well done but very dense. It's a common look for dolls but realistically the lower lashes tend to be shorter and more sparse. Your technique is good though so you could experiment with fewer lashes easily. As for the eyebrows, they do tend towards a downward slope which makes Chloe surprised with her big eyes and your other head look sorrowful, which suits her perfectly. If you try to make them lower and straighter she'll look less startled. If you have access to a photo editor you could try cutting out her eyebrows and repositioning them to see what look you like best. Good luck!

    7. Nice makeup, but the lines are too dense, and the lower eyelashes are not harmonious.

    9. Thank you

    10. Thank you !

    11. Hehe thank you, I do draw as another hobby, so I think that helped when I started practicing faceups. Ever since getting my doll I am really loving the hobby. I love customising everything and have started making her a bed and clothes.

    12. Wow thank you! Yeah I see what you mean they are a little darker compared to the sleeping face. I find my biggest struggle at the moment when doing faceups is keeping my pencil strokes as fine as possible. I hope I won't go overboard with the bottom lashes during my next faceup. hehehe

    13. Thank you so much! I have just ordered some new eyes, but I did order large eyes, but after reading what you said I think maybe it could be the eyeballs so I will order some smaller iris ones to try out. Thanks so much for the photo editor tip, thats such a good idea! Imma try it before attempting my next faceup hehehe! ^^

    14. Thank you! hehehe yeah I kept getting lazy and didn't sharpen my pencil often and before I new they were pretty dark and instead of redoing them... I went in with a darker pencil color to try and define them more... but I guess it didn't really help lol

    15. Aww thank you so much!! If you have an available practice head it's definitely worth a try.

    16. Part of it is the eye placement. Try angling them a little bit more upward, so that the iris barely touches the bottom of the eyewell, and is partially obscured by the top lid. I also think the lower lashes are way too thick, and that may be part of the problem.

Those lips look fantastic, though. Great job!
