2016 PNW BJD EXPO, May 20-22, "A BJD Comicon" Chat Thread

May 16, 2015

    1. Email us at [email protected] to switch your Sunday pass to Saturday. :)

    2. Done, thanks!

    3. You're welcome. See you Saturday :)

    4. It's getting so close! This is the best possible way to celebrate my birthday next Saturday!

    5. I'm really looking forward to this convention, especially since I wasn't able to make it to the last convention I had planned to attend (thanks to unexpected events). I'll be staying at a local area hotel, not at the resort, because the convention block was all booked up and I couldn't justify the room prices without the block discount.

    6. So glad you are able to go this year. It should be a lot of fun with all the workshops and vendors.

    7. I have a double queen room in the tower block. Its just me going, boooo. I don't need a roommate but always willing. Put it out on FB with no bites so thought I'd list it here.

    8. @Susan2453, @Kiyakotari, perhaps you could share? I'll be in the Tower block too, so you won't be alone! :)

    9. We're in the tower too!

    10. Hi! I just found this thread and I'm so glad omg!
I'm going both Saturday and Sunday, my first time at this expo and I'm SO nervous!!! My mom is tagging along too as she loves dolls but doesn't have any. It'd be really awesome to get to know some of you before! This expo sounds so much fun! I'm bringing 3 of my dolls on Saturday then two on Sunday, each in costumes!

      -Adelle

    11. Are you going to the tea, or any of the workshops? That might be the logical place to try and meet, or set up a time and place to meet each other. Maybe we should add our DOA usernames to our name badges, or maybe just put DOA on our badges and then we could walk up and say hello when we see it on a badge? That might be fun, like a DOA scavenger hunt and see who can meet the most members?

    12. I can't make it Friday sadly, but I'm there the other two days. I might do the photography set building workshop, I'm still unsure! I'll try to add my username to my badge, but I have a couple things that might help you find me haha, I have SUPER BRIGHT red hair with a blue streak down one side and I'll be carrying a big blue roller bag with my dolls in it.
I'll mostly be wherever the vendors are shopping.

    13. Red and blue hair should make you stand out from the crowd for sure. jhiggi is real close to my actual name, but I will be the 55 year old lady playing with dolls. I have a superman sweatshirt and shoes that I will be wearing one of the days and a cosplay for one but I don't want to give it away before the con. :)

    14. I finally decided what dolls to bring! I'll have my Peakswood Bluegrey Pinocchio and Dearmine Nocturne Eclipse. Both are unpainted, but maybe that'll be for the better. :) I haven't decided if there will be space for my Spiritdoll Atropa yet.

    15. Oh cool! I'll look forward to seeing your cosplay! I don't cosplay myself but I'll have a couple dolls in costumes on Sunday.
Oh! How cool! I'm so excited to see everyone's dolls! Even unpainted I bet they're gorgeous!!

I'm taking my main 3 on Saturday, they'll be dressed as themselves and they're original characters from a graphic novel series I'm writing, this is them and their costumes: The Trio
And then Sunday I'll have my boy Andy with me in his Sipderman costume, and my girl Ember dressed as Selene from Underworld minus the coat? I might have one that works but I'm not sure haha.
I hope to meet both of you there!!

    16. I'll be bringing my 2 DIM SD girls in costume, as well as 2 or 3 smaller girls, also in costume. I'm still not done with those, so I'll go simple I think.

    17. Maaaan, down to the wire. I plan on spending some time in Seattle before heading to the resort (I gotta check out the Fluevog store). I also ended up with no space for my Spiritdoll Atropa, but I may try to squeeze in Snowdrop instead. I've seen a lot of requests for Spiritdoll/Minifee hybrids around the forum...

@Luckyl, did you get a response from Spiritdoll about what dolls they're bringing?

    18. Tomorrow!!! I'm super nervous about traveling and making sure the faceup on my Dollfie Dream doesn't get damaged... like irrationally nervous >_>;;

I'll be happy to meet everyone! I did find a hotel roomie, too :) I'm staying in the Resort hotel across from the tower because I waited too long to book the room. Oh well! There is a covered walkway between hotels, so it's all good.

    19. It's been raining all week so I didn't get to finish the last-minute faceup on the LittleFee I planned to bring... so she won't be coming after all!

Instead, I'm bringing my Peak's Woods FoC Wake up Goldie and FoF Cheshire Goon, my Dollfie Dream, and my Nobledolls Raspberry. :) The three standard sizes is good, right?

    20. No. I have not asked. I'm afraid my doll budget got eaten up on some marketplace finds I was looking for so am no longer planning on buying any Spiritdolls.

    21. All my dolly stuff is ready to go, just finished up some laundry this morning to finish packing my suitcase. I can't wait for the fun to begin. My niece is coming with me and my sister, she was posing dolls and taking pictures of them last night at my house. We stayed up way to late talking, so I'll start the expo weekend extremely over tired just like always! See all of you there.

    22. So tired from getting ready late night for the trip x_x
I'm here early, waiting in the hotel lobby for my room to open.
      Sooooooon

    23. We're at our hotel down the road, waiting until closer to the early check-in time for preregistered attendees before we head over to the resort/casino.

    24. We are on the road! Getting everything in the van was like a bad game of Tetris, but we got it all in there.

    25. I'm looking forward to going tomorrow and spending the day with my daughters! We always have so much fun. A big thank you to jyrus and Marie for all of your hard work again this year! :D

    26. I've packed up my camera and lighting and am getting ready for bed. Looking forward to seeing people tomorrow!

    27. Hooray people!! :D The weather was so nice yesterday. It's thundering a little now, but I don't expect the weather to be to bad.

In case anyone is wondering and hasn't left yet, the resort wifi isn't that great; a lot of people are connected to it. I haven't been able to get DoA to fully load since I got here, but I don't live on my phone anyway; for others it might be a problem.

    28. I hope you'll all share your pics from the convention! I'm sure all the stalls were amazing :D

    29. Had a great time there yesterday. Wish I could be there today as well. (Especially since my name is still in the bucket for a potential door prize!)
Thanks to all of the volunteers for putting this on. :thumbup

    30. We're still at the hotel tonight (Sunday) if anyone is doing something after the con, lol

    31. I took a ton of pics, hoping to get through them this week. We just got home and I'm exhausted!

    32. Wow, the convention went by in a blur and I was so tired towards the end it was hard to keep my eyes open. Then I won the drawing for the Crobi doll and I still can't believe it. It was a tough weekend with my mom passing away Sat. morning on my birthday at the convention and I almost went home. We knew ahead of time that this might possible happen as she has been in stage 4 of renal cancer for the past 8 weeks. I am so glad my sister and I stopped to say hi on our way to the expo and told her we loved her and all about our weekend together and our plans. I think it made her heart smile to know her girls were going to play together for the weekend and thanks to all the kind people at the expo, especially Marie who is the kindest woman on the planet. I have lots of things I need to be doing this next week and today, but I wanted to stop and say thank you to everyone who made my weekend special even through the loss. Hugs, Julie H

    33. I'm home again, all the way in Kansas City! @designedforsmiles and I had a blast -- I'm glad there were so many others in the Tower too. I've already decided that I'm coming back next year with my husband and doing extra days to go sight-seeing.

    34. My roommate SeikoKitsune and I had a great time at the con! I wish we'd been in the tower instead of the resort, I spent a ridiculous amount of time running back and forth! It seemed like I never had what I needed with me. Next time we'll be sure to book rooms earlier.

jhiggi, congratulations on winning that stunning boy!! It must have been difficult for you to go to the con with so much on your mind. I'm sure your mother wanted you and your sister to go out and enjoy yourselves. That's why it's so important to tell our loved ones we love them too, every chance we get.

    35. I just can't describe the wonderful time I had at the convention. It was my first year, and I loved every moment! Even after flying home, the glow is still with me... can't wait til next year!
Marie and Jyrus did a SUPERB job -- you really rocked it. Thank you for everything! <3

    36. @Kurisu and everyone else who may be interested: I've just uploaded my photos of the vendor room on Flickr. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to photograph everyone's booth, so there may be some missing. :( Sorry! Also, if any of you recognize your dolls/sets and would like more detailed information added into the descriptions on Flickr, please let me know.

    37. designedforsmiles, many thanks for photos.

Everything was perfect at the event. All participants were awesome, boots were tempting and the organization was so high and excellent that I am definitely sure I will take part in the 2017 Expo. I got the lot of craftsman ideas during the event and I am full with enthusiasm. And I will join the competition part too. Prizes were wonderful.

I like the next year topic. "Myths and Legends". I already have 3 ideas for competition.

    38. :o That theme is right up my alley!

    39. The theme for next year is wonderful, but I won't enter any contest. After working hard for months on my entries this year I need a break :)

    40. I had a lot of fun this weekend too!! I'm so excited for next year! My mom loved seeing all the dolls even though she doesn't have one of her own. And it was so nice to meet some of you!!

I also uploaded my photos to flickr, there aren't many, I was distracted a lot haha. Here they are: Flickr

    41. I hope you change your mind about competing next year as you do beautiful work and it's a challenge competing with you and it would be a shame to lose such a worthy competitor. Maybe you will feel different in a few months.

    42. Thanks for the photos they are awesome. The XM William from Mirodoll dressed as the Riddler is my entry and your photos are so much better than mine! I appreciate you sharing. It is nice to put faces to the names we see on this forum. Hope to see you next year.

    43. Aw thank you! It's always nice hearing others appreciate your work. Maybe I'll change my mind. If not, I'll just make costumes for my girls to wear.

My Snowdrop still has no name, but she ditched her black fullset in favor of something a bit lighter.

Oh, a request to all you who won prizes. Please please please send a short email to thank the sponsor! It's polite and may make them more likely to come back/ donate prizes again.

    44. Thank you for the heads up on the thank you notes as I wouldn't have thought of it on my own in the state of mind I am in. I appreciate you reminding me of this long lost courtesy, it's one of those Duh? moments. :)

    45. You are so welcome! I've updated the blurb in the photos to include your username and the doll sculpt. :)

Congratulations on bringing home a Snowdrop! She's adorable~ :aheartbea Also, that's a great reminder to have! I didn't win any of the door prizes but it does make perfect sense to return that courtesy with gratefulness personally instead of relying solely on a convention itself to do so.

    46. The thanks you notes have been sent via email. I hope that is appropriate. Should I also send a physical thank you card? I want to make sure what I do is proper and respectful, thanks.

    47. By email is perfectly fine, that's how I sent mine as well.

    48. Had tons of fun again this year. Can't wait for the next time! :)

    49. I had to laugh as you got photos of my sticky notes. ^_^

I had a lot of fun this year too. All the contest entries were amazing. I have no clue if I'm entering any next year, as this year I think was my last for contests.

    50. I sometimes forget to upload photos in a timely manner after an event, so by the time I remember, sometimes I've completely forgotten what they were. :sweat I figured taking photos of the sticky notes would help me remember which category was what!

    51. I am finally back home and just wanted to say that I had a great time at the PNW BJD EXPO. It was my first one and it was really cool to attend a event dedicated to the BJD hobby. I highly recommend anyone to visit there next year and attend the BJD Expo. The setting was great and the Seattle area was really fun too. The ferry ride to the island was so fun.

Thanks to the folks that put the Expo together and the volunteers and well as the vendors and sponsors. :) I want to attend next year. :)

    52. What was everyone's favorite things at con this year?

    53. I really liked the venue and the 3 day event. The photo scenes were so creative and interactive, but maybe I enjoyed them more this time because I actually had a doll I could take pictures of in them that wasn't entered into a contest. I really enjoy the contests and hope more people chose to participate in them. I tried to go to as many forums as possible but there isn't much down time between them. The people attending were all so friendly, creative and artistic.

    54. I had a wonderful time again this year, as in all years past. Congratulations to everyone who won prizes, and to all those who entered contests, whether or not you won a prize, you all did amazing work! Really, all the entries were amazing! I can't wait to find out what the contest rules and categories are for the 2017 expo, as I have some ideas for entries, and don't want to start working on them until I know for sure what the contests are/what the rules are!

    55. Does anyone know the names or websites of the Artist Alley vendors? There were four of them, and I would love to find their information.

    56. Hi, I'm Snowfelt

    57. The third table down from the vendor room was called Rien, they had secondhand shoes, handmade clothing, and flower crowns, and they're from Canada! :) Unfortunately, when I asked they told me they hadn't had time to print business cards, and I don't remember from their sign whether or not they have a specific website or a presence on any social media, so that's all I've got!

    58. I live in Portland and I could drive to the con. I want to go very much! Has anyone done bjd cons before? What can you tell me about them? Is it worth the money?
