2016 PNW BJD EXPO, May 20-22, "A BJD Comicon" Chat Thread

May 16, 2015

    1. Thanks to all who were a part of 2015's Expo! 2016 will be at a new larger location. The Clearwater Conference Center features over 10,000 square feet allowing us to offer more classes, workshops, panels and much much more. The garden-like waterfront setting will offer even more photo opportunities during your stay.
2016's theme for contests is A BJD Comicon, and the Mascot Contest has begun.
When making your hotel reservations be sure to mention that you're with the Pacific Northwest Ball Jointed Doll Expo to receive the discounted rate. The toll free reservations line is 1-866-609-8700. For those looking to share a room, feel free to post in this thread whether you have room to share or are looking for a room.
Online registration will begin this fall.
Vendors looking to take advantage of two full days of sales in the expanded vendor room may contact the expo at [email protected]

    2. I had a WONDERFUL time at the convention. My mom, a non-collector who has been watching me enjoy dolls for the last 13 years and who attended the event with me, even came home with two dolls herself! We have a convert!! Looking forward to next year. :aheartbea

    3. To celebrate our 5th anniversary in 2016 we're bringing back Artist Alley and for our Vendors an 6' table is only $100. The sales room will be open two full days, Saturday and Sunday. Artist Alley will be on Saturday only, giving you time to enjoy many of the other activities of the convention on Friday and Sunday. Registration is included with Artist Alley and Vendor Tables, and the details for those interested in selling at the expo are now on the website.

    4. A new contest has been added for 2016, My BJD Hero. You can read the details on the contest page of the website.

    5. I'm very sad that I missed this year's expo... ;_; The date passed by and I hadn't given myself enough reminders. I really want to go next year, though! It sounds really fun!

    6. This last May was my first experience attending a bjd specific convention. I had such a great time even if my wallet may not have..... Thank you for all the kindness and support. I'm so happy that I was able to participate in the human costume contest with my bjd! I enjoy making us matching outfits! I will definitely make time to attend this coming year

    8. I'm so excited about this! I am planning to enter 4 contest and I've already started working on them. Definitely looking forward to it.

    9. Last year was great! I'm excited for comicon because it lets us celebrate all of our other adorably nerdy passions through our doll's eyes :) Awesome theme!

    10. I had a lot of fun last year! I will probably have to bring my giant gal next year too! She has to get some use out of her stroller. ^_~

    11. This sounds delightful! Bainbridge Island and some of the Comic Con experience. I hope the crowds are manageable. :-)

Crobi will be teaching a special face-up class at 2016's expo. More details can be found on the Program page of the website.

    13. Yay! I will register early for sure.

    14. I just registered! This is so exciting!

    15. I went in 2014 with my sister and had a blast but was unable to go last year as it was right before mother's day and I work in the floral business, so my boss was not about to give me the time off haha. Super happy it's later in the month this time! My sister and I will definitely be attending--she even has a doll of her own now :D

    16. My friend and recently decided we'd be coming! :D Getting to meet Spiritdoll again was what sold me, plus the venue looks really, really nice.

    17. The venue is beautiful! I was lucky to be able to tour it a few weeks ago and it's amazing.

    18. The deadline for My BJD Hero contest is tomorrow, December 1st.

Everyone has a hero. Do you have a BJD Hero? Someone that rescued you by introducing you to the hobby and world of ball-jointed dolls? Or, maybe your hero is someone that rescued your doll? In 500 characters or less, tell us about that person and why they deserve to be named a super hero at our BJD Comic Con. Include the name of the person you are nominating and your name on the entry. Email your entry by December 1, 2015. Stories of finalists will be printed in the convention program. If yours is chosen as the winning entry you and your BJD hero both receive free admission to the convention. If you have already registered to attend, your registration fee will be refunded. If you prefer your entry to be anonymous in the program, we will comply with your wishes.

    19. Am I missing the part where it says what city and state the Clearwater Conference Center is in? I'm interested in driving up from Oregon.

    20. I am not familiar with this convention, but I am interested in going. On what city and state is?

    21. The exact location is a bit buried; it is here in Suquamish, WA.

    22. Thank you Praesagium!

    23. Here is the resort website: Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort |

      Reservation information:
"Making Reservations is easy. Call the resort's toll-free line, 1-866-609-8700, and tell them you are with the Pacific Northwest Ball-Jointed Doll Expo group to receive the special rate of $120/night. A room in the "tower" gets you in the same building as the expo activities at the Resort if you do not have pets and do not smoke. Our room block includes dates from May 19 - 22, 2016. All reservations must be received at the Resort by May 2, 2016, but we suggest you call much earlier than that to reserve your room for that busy weekend.
      ...
If you want to venture off the resort for a while, just a few miles away is the quaint Norwegian town of Poulsbo where you may enjoy their celebration of Viking Fest that same weekend."

For those of you that haven't been to Poulsbo - it's a cute place to spend some time. There are several antique shops in town.

    24. I definitely plan on hitting that Viking festival at some point. :D It sounds awesome.

    25. Everyone who registers online before the end of 2015 will receive a doll sized commemorative t-shirt!
You can choose either SD, MSD or YOSD size.
Convention bags will be filled with even more items than previous years thanks to generous contributions from both Vendors and Sponsors :cheer

    26. I really wish the website was easier to navigate. I wasn't even able to figure out the location it was even at till I came to this thread. :( But I am really interested in going.

    27. Those shirts are the cutest! I normally wait till feb./march to register but seeing those got me motivated to get it done!

    28. The address for the resort and the event is 15347 Suquamish Way NE, Suquamish, WA 98392.

    29. Feel free to post questions here or PM me if there is anything I can help with.

    30. I preregistered - noticed that a number of items were missing, I'm assuming that they're sold out. Is it possible to make a note on the program page next to the sold out items as they sell out/become unavailable, so people can plan their options/know what to look for?

    31. What's missing?

    32. If you're referring to the workshop activities, they can be found on the workshop/activities page.

    33. Ahhhh, gotcha. You might want to put some text about that being in a separate purchase area in the pre-registration form, because on the Programs page it says that you chose them "when you pre-register, until sold out," which gives the impression that if they aren't available on the pre-reg form itself, they're sold out.

    34. Thanks, will do.

    35. Great news, thanks to the generosity of Dolls of Mine everyone who registers in January 2016 will also receive a t-shirt!

    36. So many pretty colors to choose from in the Fur Wig Make and Take, but only a few seats left in the workshop. This workshop takes place on Saturday and can be added to either the One Day Registration or the Full Weekend Registration.
Many, many other activities are planned and are listed on the Program Page.
One of the things I'm looking forward to is seeing everyone's costumes at the Dance Saturday night.

    37. I bought my plane ticket earlier today :D So excited!!

    38. If decorating a hat is no longer adequate for your doll's character and you'd like to learn a few millinery skills so that you can make your own hats, the Hat Make and Take Workshop on Sunday with Susan Lake is for you. All materials are provided and no previous experience is required.
This workshop can be added to either the One Day Registration or the Full Weekend Registration.
New vendors are continuing to be added and can be viewed on the Vendor page.
There is definitely plenty to be excited about Praesagium :3nodding:

So many panels are available during the weekend! :whee:

Friday evening you can meet Donn Kinney of Bishonen House, BJD Crobi, and top the evening off with live entertainment and dancing.

Saturday starts with a Meet and Greet with Spirit Doll, the sales floor opens. Then you can meet Kori Leppart of Turtle Child Studio, Learn how to build sets with Donn Kinney, Meet Suzan Lake and discover the power of Theatrical Headwear, Dea of Stardreamer Studios will teach some Photoshop techniques in her panel, and then you can Meet Glenna Hartwell of DollStories.

Sunday a Triathalon contest starts the day (sign up required), the sales floor opens, there will be an informative panel on BJDs, a sewing panel, cleaning sueding and stringing panel, mold making and casting panel with Donn Kinney, and an eye setting panel.

For a more detail list of activities including workshops and the awards banquet see the Program page on the website.

The last day to Register in March 28, 2016.

    40. This sounds like a great event! I wish o could go! I have a question, what was the attendance last year and what is the projected attendance this year?

    41. O I so want to go, especially since my favorite dollmakers will be in attendance, but need to check finances. I set a goal date; if I can purchase plane tickets by March 27 then I'll definitely be going!

    42. It's hard to predict what the attendance will be while registration is still open. We have Asian doll makers making their debut in the US, new dolls making their debut and we're at a larger more elegant venue. With all these factors and all the activities planned, it's sure to be a very well attended event. The venue's 10,000+ square foot capacity allows us to continue registration until we reach approximately 700 registrants. I hope you will be one of them. Obviously we can't compare this year to last year, considering we outgrew that venue.

I hope you can make it!

    46. Getting down to the wire on vending tables. Only 5 tables remain unspoken for. If you're a vendor and would like a table or two, contact me here on DoA or use the website. A few Artist Alley tables are available too.

    47. Just registered. Looking forward to visiting the vendor tables.

    49. I've changed con plans several times this year but finally settled on PNW :whee: I'm super excited for the amazing vendors and guest companies!! I'm coming up from California :sweat

More details are on the website. You may register for all three days of fun or just Saturday if you wish to sign up for this class. You'll get to take home the BJD Crobi head you chose and a make-up kit and be entered into a drawing to win the body to go with the head!

    52. Only 1 seat left now.

    53. A few more seats have been added to the Saturday Afternoon Tea where you will have additional opportunities to win door prizes.:apresent:
