    EDO PERIOD TIMELINE
    Relationship tree here.

Once, two of the most powerful spirits of the land had a contest as to who can form the strongest offspring. Among the many results was a spirit that looked like a koi fish mermaid. She was deemed to be a disappointment and was thus discarded, nameless. Nonetheless, she was able to acquire a piece of unwanted territory for herself, consisting mostly of mist and stagnant waters. While she kept mostly to herself, she struck up a loving relationship with a feathered serpent, a minor spirit who was cast adrift across the sea from a distant land. He was the one who gave her a name, Misha.

The feathered serpent, however, eventually reverted to a small jade stone owing to his prolonged separation from his homeland. Lonely once more, Misha took an obsidian dagger he left behind and tried to reanimate it into a new being. The result was a feathered serpent, but one wreathed in searing fire and genuinely posed a danger both to herself and her home. In a defensive instinct, Misha drove the fledgling spirit away, not realizing that she had effectively cast it from Spirit Realms and into the mortal world. She wept when she realized what she had done, and initially tried to steal the little one -- now appearing as a human baby -- from the human couple who had taken her in.

In the end, after seeing the young one's growing bond with the couple, Misha decided to just watch over her from afar, all the while hoping that her daughter will be able to find her way back home one day.
