Zbrush sculpt for 70cm male

Sep 30, 2021

    1. Hello! I totally forgot about this corner of DoA, but I went trying to court some critique from social media and didn't have much luck so I was trying to figure out where to ask and realized that this could count over here.

I'm working on a 70cm scale head version of a sculpt of my OC and I has hoping that I could get some thoughts on the overall look/facial anatomy/sculpt. The character is meant to be pretty classically handsome in a Ken doll/Disney Prince kind of way - late 30's, a cheery and charming career criminal. Other versions of the character I've done have had more of a smirk - I do want to add asymmetry, but I'm waiting til the end for that.

I also have a turntable video on my blog:
There's a basket of heads in my closet.

Does anything stick out to you?

    2. Nice job, don't really see anything sticking out. Perhaps also look at it/post it not painted/textured, it shows the sculpt better. One thing tho, how are you going to attach the head to the face? Maybe also sculpt a place where you can add little magnets?

    3. @fierox Hi, thank you! That's good thinking. Here he is blank:

After sitting with it a bit, I think the details around his eyes could be a bit thicker.

And honestly a lot of my dolls don't have magnets and I just stick their headcaps on with white tac and that was my plan, haha. I guess there's no reason I couldn't add some magnet spots in though.

    4. Looking good! Nothing really stands out as off looking, but here something to consider:
In the side profile, is the face position and size what you want, comparing to the back of the head / skull shape? I feel the face is maybe a bit "pushed out" if that makes sense? Try comparing to some photos of people with similar face style.
The top of the head / temples are pretty angular.

I'd also suggest double checking the neck joint and face plate attachment so the chin doesn't get pushed off from the neck when tilting the head down. Also keep in mind you need a secure place to grab to pose the head. My zaoll tends to eject her face whenever I try moving the head and it's super frustrating! :sweat it's on with a sliding notch thing and (admittedly crappy) magnets but never stays put because I automatically grab and tilt it wrong every time I try to move it.

I look forward to seeing him finished! You have some really cool dolls already :3nodding:

    5. I was thinking because you are going the faceplate route, magnets give the option to easily add an alternative faceplate, perhaps the smirky one :) Besides that i like the scupt. I agree that the (bottom) eyelid (area) could be a bit heavier but it all depends on what you like.

    6. Thank you both for the advice (and compliments)! Doing a faceplate really isn't my first choice for a head, but a necessity because my print bed isn't big enough to print a whole regular cap-style head. I was mindful of making the neck joint part big enough on the headback to not interfere with posing, and I do find that sticky tack is pretty good and stable for keeping parts on. I like the idea of different expressions down the line, although in practice I know that I probably won't have the patience to try to do the same faceup multiple times, haha.

@sinlaean , I'm glad you pointed out the face being pushed out because that was something that I had notice before and tried to correct. It's less skewed than it was originally, but apparently still skewed! So I pushed it in a bit further.

I came back to this and did a bunch more tweaks, including making the eyelid area a bit "meatier" for lack of a less creepy description, haha. I also added a bit of the asymmetry. I used photos of Cillian Murphy as a model, not sure if you can tell! Also, I tried putting the model on my print bed and found that the faceplate was hard to fit and orient in a good way for printing, so I actually made the ears separate pieces as well.
