I've started him last week, I'm pretty happy about how he came out even if he is not perfect and even if I had to redo his face totaly. He is named Yul, because oddly he make me think about Yul Brynner... the same baldness XD Here are some step by step photos. From the conceptual sketch which is all wrong to the last step ( for now his arms) Bad bad sketch ! The hips are all wrong, the proportions are wrong too, but well, that's to give you an idea. First to do: the head That's how he looked like before his meeting with a desk... and a chair...and the floor.... and a chair again (( poor boy)) To give you an idea og his size (sorry for the nudity) That's how I'm trying to make him look, I will have to do the same wig with fur (If I manage to find good fur). That's Rose from The Trax, a K-rock band The most recent photo, I have finished his arms nos, I need to do the hands, I hope I will make them right. And after that ... the legs ... Auw T.T hardest part ! You can find all the step by step photos here. It's updated really often http://s29.photobucket.com/albums/c272/NylhBJD/Etranger/
Wow that's very involved and I like the way he looks so far. What are you using as material? LaDoll clay?
Oh, he's very unique! (Wow, 80cm!) Can't wait to see him when he's done. I'm also curious what you're using to sculpt. Also, are those wooden balls you're using for joints? (If you hand-made them... You're a god of sculpting. 8p) Good luck with the legs & such! (I started with the legs. xp Next time the torso comes first!)
Thanks you ^^ About the clay I have found a wonderful one called Giotto Plastiroc, it's cheap (as I've already used 6kg of this clay to sculpt him and as he is not finished yet that's a good point), dry hard, can be sanded nicely. However I have to use lot of water to work it. I mean when I have to add a part it's like : pour water on the dried clay, pour watter on the part I'm adding, press the clay to make it stuck to the part, sculpt, pour water again, smooth it. but the results is really nice. About the joints I used a really simple method. I bought polystirene (?) balls (the white ones) from various sizes. For the shoulders and hips I just put the balls on the lungs, put clay over them, sculpted a joint, let it dry, cut the joint to put the elastic and remove the ball with a cutter (Is that clear ? Oo; ) For the elbows I just make a mold with the smaller balls (you see one on the photo). so now Yul has a leg, almost done. I need to sand it to give it a nicer shape and to fix the joint better.
Oh? If I ever decide to cast something (unlikely), maybe I'll give it a try, too. Ah, I see. Yes, that's clear, but too bad that stuff doesn't mix too well with heat. But, yep, they look very nice & smooth (unlike my hand-rolled balls). Good luck, once again, with Yul! (Will he be a musician like his name & inspiration indicate? ;D) I'm just staggered by how big he is going to be. Looking forward to seeing the finished dolly!
I will try to make him look like Rose, but for now I'm moe busy with his body. I've finally manage to fix his first leg and he can stand pretty well. His second leg is in progress but I don't have enough clay to finish it -.- Need to buy some more. I've already used 8kg ok clay on him (he do not weight 8kg though XD ) To give you an idea of his size next to my other bjds ^^
Very impressive! 80cm is very much, the first picture in your second post makes it clear how much it actually is o.o I'm very surprised and damn I admire those who make their own dolls XD He looks amazing!
Wow, impressive, size and look. I would think the hands would be harder than the legs, but I don't sculpt. I don't think I have the patience.
woah..yu tottally rock *worships and bows* I have no sculpting talent what so ever! and 80cm! wow! I give you major kudous my friend.
ROSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! ROSE ROSE ROSE!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*hearts* but he isn't in the trax anymore
cool! the Trax! I like their music... at least the older ones. The doll is sooo big! So you use thicker elastic chords for it? Also, where do you get the clay and have you used other clays?
Thanks a lot for your comments. I haven't worked much on him recently as I have started other dolls project (like a t 15cm tall doll ). Yul is still one-legged but has a foot. I need to reshape his knee which is pretty ugly.... fayerie: I'm sad too, Rose was my favourite perret: yes, I use a thicker elastic than the ones you use for SD dolls. About the clay I have worked with lot of clay but plastiroc is really the best I have found. I buy it in craft stores. It's rather cheap too, around 5$ for 1kg. Plastiroc doesn't crack when it dries, you work it with water, can sand it perfectly. And it's REALLY strong when it's dried.
Wow... What an amazing, amazing face he has. Well.. his body is too, that goes without saying But that FACE! He just grabs you and pulls you in!! Wow.
Oh my wow - he looks amazing so far. And 80cm O_Oeek!! My legs are 80cm - me must be very tall in person (which is seen by the ref photos with other dolls). You = great
somehow they sound really different without rose.. i am trying to make a barbie-sized doll.. but so far i have only half finished the head! i am slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww and her face is funny it is alittle more chubbier on one side... i dunno wad to do.. can you pls help?heehee and ooh~ who's tt handsome thing i see next to ur unfinished rose-look-alike?
*lol* Yeah, Yul is really tall... and heavy . I doubt I will cast him in resin or I have to win to the lottery first XD Faery, I don't know hos to help you without photos. I'm not as good as some sculptors here. All I can say is if the face is chubbier on one side... sand it XD The handsome thing ... err.... My ex-nanuri ? my ex-MNF Shiwoo or my ex- Miyavi cosplay doll ?
Depends on what kind of clay you use for sculpting. If it's air-drying you could either sand it, or use a bit of water and re-shape it. If it's the kind you have to burn before it settles you could reshape it (add a bit of water and it's easier). The ways I've mentioned (save the sanding part) assumes you're using a natural and/or water-based clay. Whatever clay you're using, you could always add a bit of chubbiness to the other cheek. To check the symmetry further you could use a mirror and observe your doll's head through it, it shows mistakes you otherwise wouldn't be able to catch. And not to mention how expensive latex for the mould is!
I can't believe I missed this thread! THIS IS TURNING OUT SO NICELY! ^____^ ( *Note to self-- check for that clay mentioned in begining post. XD )
He looks totally amazing! I love the torso detail you put into him and I really like his big nose XD, I can't wait to see him done! I've been looking round for the Giotto Plastiroc you use, just to see if I could get some, and I can't find it through the US! T__T So. I had a quick question- Is this the same stuff? http://www.tim-store.com/misc-ss/CL187.html
I haven't worked on him sinc the last time I posted photos. I've created smallest dolls instead. It was my miyavi cosplay doll yup ^^ About the plastiroc I can't see the photo well. In France the packaging is white in a 2kg bucket http://img26.echo.cx/img26/5682/img10731za.jpg or in 500g or 1kg packet http://membres.lycos.fr/lerool/images/plastiroc.jpg But as long as it's Giotto Plastiroc it's good
Great job, the sketch looked more like a girl with the hips but you seem to have fixed that on the doll, I adore the detail in his stomach ^_^
Well, I'm not sure he will finished this year, I need to re sculpt the limbs with better joints a photo with my almost finished other bjd :
that is the awesomeness! aww your little one is adorable too^^ i want your clay.. i doubt i'll find plastiroc anywhere in this country though
lol, Miyavi is sitting next to him. xD He's so much smaller. The face looks almost like the picture. :3 It looks great. The only problem I see is that the torso looks a bit flat, but maybe it's just me. It might look better in person. Good luck!
