Your reasons for choosing your first doll?

Jun 20, 2011

    1. I will admit, I chose my first doll based on price. I'm only 14 and didn't really get my parents permission (hehe) so I had to spend my own money. Luckily, I liked the sculpt as well! But you shouldn't just get a doll for the price; you have to like the sculpt, too.

    2. Dollzone SD Minas will be my first doll to arrive. She is a beautiful Sculpt! She has a lovely face. Another really important factor for me was availability. I wanted a Volks doll but couldn't find a UK or European dealer. It seems almost impossible to buy Volks dolls in Europe!!!

    3. My first doll, a doll leaves gabriel, inspired me on first sight! Since them her character has changed drastically, and unfortunately the sculpt no longer fits her, so I'm going to get and angell studio rhea instead (if you look at them side by side they're actually very similar.)
The main reason I chose aspen as my first she'll is I wanted a doll like me (she wasn't my first choice to shell but...) and like me aspen is transgender, and I liked seeing something like a doll, the representation of perfecting in humans, being like me. Probably pretty silly, but it made me happy.

    4. While I am still saving for my doll (Hopefully this September! I want that special 18 birthday present we all wish for :XD: ) I chose Pidgin due to her delightful body shape and she reminds me of my built *minus the big hips* (lucky girl) I also fell in love with her long limbs and that strong jaw line she held. On top of that the thought of having a doll bigger then 1/6 for me is rather...scary haha. I want to travel with her so 1/6 was the best size! Ontop of that she is mature and and creepy lil child look >_>

    5. I was interested in BJDs for about a year before I decided to take the plunge and buy my first. I chose Brinn because she looks almost exactly the way I imagine a character I'm currently writing who I adore. I saw her on eBay and knew right away she was the one I wanted.

    6. Heh... I had decided that 'proper' BJDs were too expensive, so I bought an obitsu boy with a cute head that wasn't too anime. If anything, that only made it worse - I played with my obitsu and couldn't keep my eyes of Iplehouse Asa :)

Until I finally gave in and bought her. Since then, I acquired a few floating heads who needed bodies and so a couple of hybrids joined the family. Aoi, my Asa, is still the most beautiful of them all, and my obitsu elf stands proud (and tall, haha) with them.

    7. My first doll was sort of intended (for the most part) to be a "gateway" doll - something that could warm my family up to the hobby. After seeing my friend's Mudoll bebe, I fell in love with how tiny and adorable she was, and so did my mam X3 I waited a while to make a final decision on which bebe set I really wanted and when they released Mint Bonbon Chiuu I just loved how sweet and frilly she was! >w< Needless to say I love her to pieces and she did work well for introducing the rest of the family to bjds ^-^

    8. I just wanted to own my first one to see what all bjd's was about. I started out thinking I would never warm to a female bjd of the larger dolls, of course that whole idea went by the wayside and I love all sizes now

    9. It was cheap. I had a very old secondhand dollzone. I bought the doll for ~30 USD.

    10. I guess even though I have been watching BJD dolls around internet for years the choose of my fist doll was quite easy. First I only needed to see many photos of Fairyland minifees until I was completely sold for that fabulous body, especially their Moe-line body (oh I just love the torso shape :aheartbea). So choosing the company and body was quite easy but then choosing the face sculpt took me more time : D after all I feel like I bought my first bjd quite extempore :aangel: <3

    11. I picked out the DreamingDoll Misora because I was intent on getting an MSD as my first doll and I wanted something more mature looking (in the teen+ age range), androgynous, and still mega cute! She met all my preferences and I fell in love with her sample photos - she hasn't arrived yet but I'm hoping she looks perfect irl too.

    12. Mystic Kids was having a GREAT sale.

...That's literally it I have nothing else to say for myself...

    13. When I first saw the Luts Terra, it just stroke me how me he looked like a character of mine. I wasn't intending at all to get a BJD at that time, but when I decided to get one, I knew it would be this one ! I got lucky and found his head on a forum marketplace for a really reasonable price and in the colour I wanted, so I bought him and ordered a body for him fro Bobobie. In a week, he was home !

    14. Twigling has always had some of my favorite dolls, so when she offered the Ingenue sculpt in the MSD size, I knew I had to get one! It worked out great because she's a scuplt that I love at a good size for someone just starting out. Now I'm just waiting to get her :)

    15. My first doll is a Ringdoll Norman Light 2.0 and he just fit all of my criteria! What really got my attention was his face and the company faceup, I liked that his face looked mature but still has fuller cheeks. Ringdoll as a whole has a lot of things I like because of the dark, vintagey, odd style that they have.

    16. I haven't purchased my first doll yet but I will be doing so soon. My first girl will be from Leeke World. There are 2 dolls that I'm currently trying to decide between. The first is Chloe, I love the way her eyes look and that little pouty mouth is adorable. The second one I'm eyeing is Ariana. I just love those art bodies, I think they compliment their large heads rather nicely. I really love this style of doll and I'm looking forward to finally getting one.

    17. So... Hopefully no one finds me a "brat" but my first doll was a gift from my mother...
So I didn't get to choice him.

He was a gift because I had finally found something that truly made me happy and made me socialize with people. (I have extreme social anxiety)

My second doll was a littlefee ante elf... I bought her because I liked how everyone else made her look.
(Which in the end I hated her)

My next doll was a pukifee Bonnie which I bought for the size and that it was new an in stock...
(Which I ended up hating the over jointed body)

Then after her there was my first "real doll" that I fell in love with, which was a nanuri 2013 event head. I loved her to pieces and should have kept her but ended up needing the money for a hasty move. :(

    18. In a way, mine just kind of found me in a way, even though I wasn't really looking into actually purchasing one. My best friend was showing me a bunch of doll pictures that she liked on tumblr and tagging me in them, so I decided I'd find ones that I liked too and tag her. That's when I found pictures of Corni, and she just really stuck out to me. I was in awe of how pretty and cute she was, and I ended up looking into her more and trying to find out what kind of doll she was and where to get her. She was the first bjd that made that big of an impression on me, and after a couple of years of constantly admiring her pictures, I knew I just had to have this doll and began saving for her.

    19. Although I loved the look of BJD, I never bought one because of the expense and I had no idea what I would do with one. I couldn't justify spending so much and then forgetting about it later after the newness wore off.

But Daisy Dayes baby centaurs... well that changed everything.

    20. I originally wanted an Iple nYID Oscar but after mulling over it for a time, I decided I wanted an SID instead of an nYID. I ended up going with a Felix because his sculpt reminded me of Oscar's (like they could be brothers!). Maybe one day I'll get an Oscar too ;_;

    21. I wanted a large enough doll for a price that wouldn't make my fiance fall over - we're careful with our money, especially as we're trying to move house, and I plan on getting more so I needed to ease him into the hobby slowly XD So I went for an Island Crystal sculpt, I loved her pretty face and her elven ears, and she was relatively affordable even with wig and faceup

    22. Well, being a student who only earns money for dolls during school breaks... I would say: price, sculpt and reviews. I go for dolls from a certain price point (although I know it's not encouraged, but I feel that there are gorgeous dolls that aren't as expensive as well!) and then I choose the sculpt with features that I love and check up on reviews from the company and photos from other doll owners! It really takes a lot of time for me to decide as well hahah!

    23. I believe it was a Switch Javi. This was so long ago, the company wasn't even named Switch at the time. So Nyeon Gi, I think it was?

...and it was kind of a poor decision, honestly. I loved the company's photos, but never warmed to the doll itself once I received. I sold it fairly quickly.

It is always hard to judge dolls' sculpts from just photos, but I think it is especially difficult when you are new to the hobby to differentiate between your love for the faceup, styling and photography versus your love for the actual blank sculpt which is what you are getting.

To be fair though, I might have liked that doll better had I received it today because I have better faceup skills now and might be able to make it look the way I really wanted it to look. And also, I think part of my frustration was not due to the doll but to the usual hurdles of the bjd hobby - I didn't know how to do this or that, everything was expensive, everything took a long time to arrive, stuff didn't fit, and so on.

    24. My mom and I found this hobby on Pinterest, and we found the dolls we were pinning the most were Iplehouse dolls. So when I finally decided to get one and talked my husband into it, I knew it would be an Iplehouse. After that it was just looking at all the sculpts and deciding what I liked the best. :)

    25. I was looking around at bjds on ebay. I had just gotten info about the hobby from someone on DA, so naturally, my impatience kicked in and I had to have one soon! I found this girl on ebay, who just struck me. I quickly made an offer, not knowing hardly anything about the sculpt. After some haggling, we agreed on a price and I had won! She was a full doll with a wig, COA, original box, etc.

    26. I was into Anime figures, when I suddenly discovered BJD dolls. their beautiful faces facinated me, and I sat for days and nights researhing and looked at pictures of hundreds of dolls. I finally decided to order a FeePle65 Chloe from Fairyland. When it arrived I was about burned out, after too much BJD stuff in just a few weeks time, so the doll was stored away. Then the fire came back to me a few months later, with full ignition, and I started to look for outfits. I got my outfit and dressed her up for display. After that I have bought more dolls, but i have also discovered Volks Dollfie Dreams and Smart Dolls, which I love with same passion as the BJD's. So now I have dolls in all three categories. And I am so happy with all those adorable faces surrounding me everywhere in my home :)

    27. I wanted my first doll to have a feminine face with big expressive eyes. Also, the look of the body was very important. I was looking for a thin and again very feminine sculpt. I ended up ordering Kiomi.

    28. Before I got into BJDs, I collected Pullips. Browsing for Pullip clothes is actually how I came across clothes for Lati's. I was instantly drawn to how detailed and delicate they were, and a plus was that they're so small! I absolutely adore all things tiny, so of course my first BJD was a little Lati White :)

    29. When I first saw Kai on my local trade site, just had to have him, even though he was rather expensive, lucky me the seller let me pay him off, so 6 months later, he was mine :) I suspect that my reason was he was really mature and that's what I was looking for.

    30. I wanted a 1/3 doll and the only place I knew to look for one was at a convention. I only found only one boy that size. He was wearing a wig that was too large and awful oversized, mismatched clothes. But I kept thinking about his beautiful face and finally decided to buy him. I have no regrets. With a properly fitted wig and the historical clothes he loves, he's magnificent.

    31. I fell in love with a company when I was 13 or 14-- mind, this is over 14 or 15 years ago. I recently became very certain that this company with my dream dolls was Luts, and now I'm not even sure if that's true! But I absolutely needed to have a doll from this company, and if it's Luts, that means I must have a Luts doll! And the most appealing of those dolls was Jun Ha, so that's what I picked.

After a lot of waiting, and anxiety, and general not doing well, he came home-- and my reception was honestly pretty lukewarm, like, I wasn't absolutely thrilled like I thought I'd be. But these days, looking at him, my heart skips a little, and nothing makes me happier than to hold him and touch him. Even if Luts wasn't my dream company, I'm pretty sure I have my dream doll after all. <3

    32. My deciding factors were the following:
      1. Doll's face must not be too anime-looking
      2. Doll's body must be close to realistic proportions
      3. Doll must be within my set budget
I browsed through tons of images from various BJD companies before I decided on a doll whose face/body type I liked and was actually in my spending limits (Iplehouse met #1 and #2 but way overshot #3). Now I'm just setting things in order so I can finally order her. :)

    33. My first doll is my Fantasy Doll Tobias, I got him in 2011.
I wasn't sure at the time if it was a hobby that I could commit to financially. But I really wanted a doll because I saw so many of them at a convention the year before. So I did some research and some searching and I found Fdoll. They had the SD13 sizes that I want, and for a price I could afford and was willing to pay to see if it was something for me.
I got him two months after I ordered him and I haven't looked back since. :P
He's still my favorite doll and of all the ones that I have gotten since then, he's the one I'm most proud of and the one I have invested more time and effort in to. ^__^ :D

    34. So embarrassing
I bought the cheapest one I could find and based it on the profile pic because I liked the color of the eyes...
      Not knowing eyes were interchangable.

    35. ooohhh I see your picture there... is that a pullip dal doll??? are you also a collector?

the Reason is "I love the sculpt" i love girl dolls and the size if perfect... not too tall not too short... just right

    36. 'Realistic' is the only condition for choosing my first bjd because I wish she could exbit my designs of cloth emulatly:celebrate

    37. My first dolly will be Ringdolls Lucifer, for several reasons.

He looks the most like my character - humourisly also called Lucifer - and his face is just all puurdy.
His default hair was also super close to Lucys.
      He's purrdy.
      So purrdy.
Oh my god i cannot stop looking at him.
Where did i come from.. Oh! And even thought he's insanely expensive for a first doll? I couldn't find anyone else who looked as much like him as Lucifer does. It was faaaaate!

    38. I knew I wanted a more mature type body (so that meant msd or sd). But I generally just looked at sculpts and other peoples collections too. When I found LIttle Sophia, I checked reviews and unboxing's, and other collectors Little Sophia's to get a feel what could do with her. I also just found her super pretty, and couldn't stop obsessing.

    39. I chose my first doll by asking myself, how much am i willing to spend. At first i really couldnt believe the prices and told myself, nah ill never be able to get one no matter how much i like these gorgeous dolls. I passed on the idea for 4yrs. Then i just couldnt hold much longer and i said, the only one that i am willing to spend that much is Sephiroth. Then i looked, researched and found one. At first he was soldout then i asked the company if they are willing to sell them again soon. So there ^_^ im happy i did.

    40. Frankly, she was cheap and cute. I did not need anything else at that time.

      • x 1
    41. She was cute and the price was right. No regrets, she's so adorable! Simple as that.

    42. I knew I wanted a fairyland doll and after looking at all the sculpts for a while I just attached to Celine and couldn't get her out of my head after that so I had almost bonded with her before she even got here. The problem after that was deciding on a size :|which took forever for me to settle on the feeple.

    43. I just wanted to find "the one," so I trawled through well known doll companies until a sculpt called out to me. I knew I wanted a boy and that he had to be SD sized to go with my wife's first doll, but those were my only parameters.

Honestly, I think the one I chose won out because he had silver hair and I was super Kingdom Hearts obsessed at the time. :whee:

    44. Oh, if to honest, first of all I see a very beautiful doll, it was dollzone Ivan, and I decide to buy him, but then I fall in love with different pipos dolls and decide to sold Ivan.

    45. I wasnt sure if this hobby was 100% for me so looked through the cheaper brands. The RS Mei is a super cute sculpt I really loved and wasnt going to break the bank if I found it wasnt for me.
I'm very happy with her as it happens so I feel more confident about finding *the* doll for me if that makes sense.

    46. I really loved Dollzone's sculpts and style and I thought that MSD is a pretty good size...when I saw cute Leon in stock at Angelesque I knew that he would be my first doll! ^ - ^

    47. Honestly I loved his sweet little face. Plus he was within my price range, as at the time I was also ordering a $600 laptop. So $550-600 for a BJD was the rest of my tax return. XD I love Little Monica's sculpts, and the Little Kliff model was just so cute and exactly who I was looking for as my first doll.

    48. I really loved her face, particularly her nose and her slightly lost expression. She (Doll Love Nichi) was in my price range as a new collector who wasn't 100% sure I was in the right hobby, plus I received 15% off and a free face up due to an event. Finally, she ticked the rest of my "must have" boxes: female, a solid poser, & a standard-sized MSD able to wear most regular MSD clothes, shoes, and wigs.

She was a wonderful intro to the hobby, and I'm still so happy with her.

    49. I'm not going to be able to purchase my first doll for a few months, but I've chosen a minifee Ryeon because I really like the size, the amount of clothes available for mnf, posabilty, and I think the sculpt is perfect for my character. Also, I know what to expect from a mnf, since it's pretty popular, and there's tons of pics/ box openings/ etc so I'm really confident I'll love her. I don't mind the price, I want something nice for my first doll (and most beloved OC).

    50. My first doll was a Dream of Doll Homme Ducan, he just struck a cord with me and he at the time, looked just like my one OC I had back in the day. I saved forever to get him and I had him for years and years! I really treasured him and honestly still do even though he's moved on from me, I like seeing pictures and updates with his new owner who loves him as much as I did when I first got him. :kitty2

    51. For me it was that I found a sculpt that I liked secondhand that wasn't out of my price range at the time. It wasn't my ideal doll though, and now I am debating selling him since I no longer feel any excitement around him, in fact he annoy me more than anything else for some reason. Oh well, that's life I guess. But I think for future people who get into the hobby and plan to get a doll, get a sculpt you really love, don't just settle for price because you want something right away. Give it time and save up if you have to .

    52. At first I didn't really know what I was looking for, but after a ton of research and some time I was able to pin down what I wanted. I was eyeing him for a awhile too and a suprise sale finally pushed me to grab him. And am I glad I did! Originally, the main reason I liked him because he resembled an existing OC of mine.. but then once I got him he quickly grew into his own character. :3nodding:

    53. My first bjd was a PopoDoll Ramiel and my Iplehouse Akando.
Originally I had planned a LUTS Bory to be my first but then I heard that the Akando was being discontinued so he became first on my list, as well as the limited Ramiel. I was scared either would be sold out so before they could be, I ordered them both.

I love my Ramiel because of his creep factor and his uniqueness and I love my Akando because he looks so similar to one of my OCs, so he's actually a shelled OC.

    54. It's hard to describe really. When I saw the product photo her face was so adorable, I just loved her. I just instantly knew that was the first BJD I wanted to have.
However, at the time I wasn't able to afford to buy her and knew there was a chance I might not like her down the line. However, throughout the following year I kept researching that doll, price comparing, deciding what I'd like to make her look like, and all that and in the end, I wound up getting her even if her product photos weren't the best and she had few quality owner photos.

    55. My sister gave me my first "real" doll -- Lil Choco Cat that you see in my icon.
I thought my sister's Fairyland doll May was precious, so I started looking at Fairyland.
Then they had the summer event, with Haru, June and the Hippogriffs! I ordered Haru, and am anxiously awaiting her arrival.

    56. Beautiful nose, general face structure very much to my aesthetic, enchanting promo pictures, and there was a character based on this doll in the game Nameless... Not even my favorite character from the game, but that plus the fact that I couldn't take my eyes off the promo photos made me feel like he was the one. Something just clicked!

    57. My first doll purchase was part research and part impulse. I was really in love with the Miyu sculpt Luts offered back then but SD-sized dolls scared me and they were way beyond my budget. So I started looking into the YOSD size, it seemed like a good choice for a beginner. Not too big, not too small and in general a good balance between price and quality. I wanted my first doll to appeal to me and I wanted her/him to be easy to pose. Littlefee Ante and Leah drew my attention. I just couldn't decide between them so I put off the purchase for a while until a full-set Leah appeared on E-bay. I kind of impulse bought her right then and there and paid way too much for her on top of that.

Do I regret the purchase? Not really, she taught me a lot about the hobby. However she and I never bonded and I noticed after a while that her expression made me feel uneasy. It is a hard choice to make but I believe we'll be parting someday in the future. Her body is currently being used to shell my very first boy. In the meanwhile I also own a Pukifee Ante and a Feeple60 Miyu and amongst others and I love them both to death. My advice for purchasing your first doll? Follow your heart and don't settle for less.

    58. i simply fell in love with it

    59. I stumbled upon a doll person in the lobby of the convention hotel and she invited me to sit with her and play with her dolls. I played with Reika for a while and fell in love. I told her how much I loved her doll and asked where she got it from, and she told me that her sale was pending but if the deal fell through she would let me buy her. Well she ended up letting me buy her. I played with her all weekend and couldn't wait to take her back with me.

    60. Well, my sister bought me my first bjd. She showed me them & i fell in love!
I got a mystic kids Lillian & she is just too perfect
Now i just need all the minifees
