Your reasons for choosing your first doll? - pt.2

Dec 6, 2018

    1. My first doll was the Minifee Shushu. I got her secondhand and she just spoke to me. I saw her listing on facebook and my first reaction was just 'I WANT THAT ONE'. So i bought her, and she's always next to me on my desk ^^ There's something about her eyes and her face-up and everything that just caught me. Not even the sculpt per-se, but this specific doll, with these eyes and this face-up.

    2. My first doll was a Ringdoll Kid Rebecca. I purchased her on impulse because the doll dealer I was visiting happened to have her in stock. I loved her to bits, but I've moved on, and I ended up giving her to a friend.

    3. My first doll was a Doll Chateau Bella. I loved the body she came with and was okay with her face. I now have a Flower and Junior Mushiyi head on her body.

    4. My first was Angel of Dream Chen, first version. I chose him because he was MSD--I thought SD would be too big for my first doll, and YoSD might not be worth the money to me since I already had a lot of cheaper fashion dolls in that small size. I also had 1/4 scale furniture already from American Girl and other dolls, so he could use it. I liked Chen because he didn't look like a child, and his face was so beautiful to me! This was in 2008, and back then many dolls were very anime stylized, and I felt Chen looked more realistic. I also kind of limited myself because I didn't have any experience with international buying, and even though he only cost $175, it took me a long time to save up that much money, and I was terrified of buying from an unauthorized seller or losing my money, so I ordered him in stock at JunkySpot, knowing it would be easier to get my money back should anything go wrong. I did shop around and look at a lot of dolls first, but Chen called to me. After requesting owner pix, I just KNEW he was the one! It's been almost 11 years now and I still have him, even though he's very different from what I prefer now!

    5. my first doll was a pukifee luna and i loved her to bits! a friend is currently buying her from me on layway and i can't express enough how grateful i am that the doll is going to a safe and familiar home.
My tastes in dolls have not changed.
I am forever buying little YO-SD dolls!

    6. My first doll was a Pukifee Ante, and I got him because a friend of mine has one and I fell in love with the sculpt. Every time I saw her I was like, "Man, I need that doll, she is SO CUTE," so I made it work and brought one home.

... Over time, I found out "cute dolls" aren't my bag. Nor are small ones. Definitely not Fairyland, though I love plenty of other people's Fairyland collections.

I count my first doll as my DZ Amelia who I've had home since August. Love him to bits, he's always by my bed, and he's never going anywhere. Picking his sculpt was a nightmare and I wasn't sure he was The One until I opened the box and was absolutely floored by how perfect he was. (Not to swoon..)

    7. My first doll was a Loong Soul Domimi and to be honest, chose him because he was the ugliest doll I've ever seen.

    8. I just wanted to say that I absolutely love this and it's the best, most unique reason for getting a doll I've seen yet.

    9. @staghaus, haha, thank you, I love this little freak from the bottom of my heart.

    10. I have long wanted to buy a doll. My first doll was a Doll Leaves Maya. I had a dream about a school of magic for boys in another world. In this school I was a teacher and I had a favorite student. When I saw the promo photo of Maya, he looked like a boy from a dream. I ordered it the same day.

    11. Aww, I love him. I don't think there are enough "unconventional" but still human looking dolls out there.

    12. I just ordered Francisca, from Morningstar Dolls, because I loved her chubby round body. She is shaped like my favorite pinup, Hilda! She wasn't anything on my wish list of dolls that I wanted, but I fell instantly in love when I saw her.

    13. My first (not really here yet) is Volks Tohya... Why? I was searching for fav mold for a really long time, because I wanted it to be perfect for me, since I can't afford a lot of dolls... I mean, for now I just have to do that one perfect.

I think the mold has absolutely the best eye shape I've ever find also it's long, weird nose is charming for me. The same with lips, they're just so graceful when you see doll's profile.

    14. My first doll isn’t here yet, but I chose her (Luts Nana elf ver) because I’ve been planning on recreating one of my favorite video game characters and she was just perfect. She should be here next week though

    15. My first bjd sculpt (head) was Fang by MDR. I still haven't found a satisfactory body for her, but in the meanwhile, I've happily added an MDR Zuri to my small collection. So technically, she's my first complete doll.

I picked Zuri because she looked "alive" to me even without a face-up. Most of the bjd's that catch my eye are absolutely beautiful in their respective face-ups. But, remove the paint, and the sculpt loses its soul. I felt confident in the purchase on a practical level because of the beauty and quality of my Fang head. If Zuri is even half as nice, I know I'll be thrilled with her!

    16. The reason I chose my first bjd Wyvern is because her faceup done by Feyacchi had glitter on it. I am a sucker for glitter and shiny things. ‍(insert crow emoji :atremblin ). I always wanted a glittery doll (catering to my inner child).

    17. My first ever doll was a Dollzone Ray, and I just absolutely fell in love with his company photos and his unamused expression. I also chose him based on the size, 1/3 was too big and expensive, and back then (2010ish) 1/6 were all either babylike or anthros- so 1/4 was perfect.

    18. My first doll was a secondhand Resinsoul Mei, and I had already wanted one before I got her, but tbh the main reason I got her was because she had a poorly-done mod (it's covered by clothes, at least) that made her cost less than $100.

    19. I loved Dream of Doll and desperately wanted to have a ~limited~ doll. The timing just worked out that it was Black Elf Sha released just as I had saved up enough for a doll that price.

PS this is a terrible way to decide on a doll and you should not do it

    20. My first doll was a Kid Delf Cherry. I wanted to try the MSD size first, both as a cost-saving measure and because I thought SD would be too big, and I'd heard very good things about Luts in general and Kid Delfs specifically.

She's since moved on, but I'm happy with the time we had together!

    21. My first doll was a DreamingDoll Misora. I chose her mostly (and wrongly) due to her price tag, that was acceptable for young, university-student me at the time. I overall liked her, but it's true that I didn't know most companies yet and hadn't considered diving deeper into the list to get a better understanding of everything the market had to offer. In the end, we didn't bond, understandably, and she ended up for sale not a year later.

    22. My first doll was from Resinsoul in 2014. I'm sure that's a familiar tale! :XD: She's a white Mei on the Rong body. I dearly wanted a dreamy elf character, and she's the closest I could get on the tiny budget I had. I had so much fun doing her faceup myself -- not very well, but I was proud of it nevertheless! I still really like the MSD size the best! :chibi

    23. My first doll I purchased was a Dream Valley giraffe Calle. I thought she was being discontinued at the time which she wasn’t but I jumped on getting her as she was everything I wanted at the time cute, four-legged and available in purple. She did end up being discontinued later and I’m really glad I got her anyway because she is simply adorable.

    24. My first ever BJD is a Luts Kid Delf Hodoo bought 2008, such a cutie pie mold that is flexible enough for one of my OC's that can look mature (or ageless). After seeing first hand the sizes of BJD's on a dorrie meet, I was intimidated by the size of SD's and chose to go for MSD's first. I was supposed to get Delf El first but was not too fond of the design of Luts Delf body and was not ready to own an SD.

    25. My first doll was a Soom Afi. I just love fantasy and her little deer hooves were to die for. :)

There was this face up artist I always followed, and she had a beautiful Afi. It inspired me to eventually get one myself.

    26. My first on topic doll was a Doll family H Xianuo. I got him because I wanted a 1/6th male fantasy sculpt and he was honestly the cheapest I could find at a base price of $100. That was over 10 years ago.

    27. My first (and only so far) doll is the one I have, who was given to me by a kind Buy-Nothing neighbor! She's a Doll Leaves Ida.

    28. My first was a Dollstown Seola. I had seen pictures of her on a friend's blog and was in love. When my friend started downsizing her collection, I was lucky enough to bring her home. That was close to eleven years ago and I still have her; she's absolutely one of my favorite dolls.

    29. My first doll was Gem of Doll Castor. I just got him last December and I absolutely love him.

I think what got got my attention was his little smile. I clicked on his page the moment I saw his photo on the listing. I love his theme, I love his colors along with the story he had with his brother. He was worth every penny.

    30. Mine was Resinsoul Wu, and still love him.

    31. Resinsoul Mei, chosen primarily for the price tag, though I did think she was pretty. I wish I had waited – they're fine dolls, but I didn't realize until I had a BJD from another company that there are others with better posability, resin texture, and just generally designs that appeal to me more

    32. Aimerai Penelope!
Honestly, it was love at first sight. And I still love her just the same.

    33. Chiwoo. Always Chiwoo. I have a Delf Chiwoo, MiniFee Chiwoo and 2 heads that need bodies.

    34. I'm still contemplating my first doll! I recently saw a DIM Flowen but learned that the company has shut down, so I'm trying to decide who is going to make me take the plunge on larger dolls. I have dozens of the 1/12 dolls from blind box companies, but recently received a 1/6 UFDoll which has prompted my interest in larger resin dolls (plus I'm OBSESSED with Coral Reef's work).

    35. I had planned to only get one (1) BJD in my life to be complete, but I haven't yet decided which sculpt suits her best. Then came along SartoriaJ's Malena that I had admired for a couple of weeks prior to its current re-release. Looking at her, it's the charm of her smile and the shape of her eyes that says to me: this is a woman who is confident, flirty, and mischievous... she's the perfect shell for the other half for my grail doll who is brooding, stern, and ethereal.

    36. My first (and only, but hoping to change that sometime in the future!) doll is a Doll Family-H Nan Xing. I was looking for a doll that would fit a specific oc I have, but would also fit within my budget, and while browsing different companies' offerings I happened across him. What truly got me was the slight smirk the head had, which just simply fit the vibes of that oc perfectly! Mischievous, but also subtle enough to have a bit of flexibility as to what the expression could be with the right faceup.

    37. Simple, it is love at first sight! My Delf Lishe for female and Dollzone Yuu for male.

    38. My first one is a DDS Frieren. I was obsessed with the anime and getting into the manga at the time she was released, as well as newly interested in dolls and considering which one I'd like to start with. It was all just perfect timing and I dove right in!

    39. Dollshe Bernard - I fell in love with his dreamy eyed poet look in the promo photos. I had 2 Bernard heads when I began in the hobby and I tried to hybrid them onto a smaller body as the Dollshe one was too big for what I wanted. Luckily the older Bernard head is quite small so it ended up fitting well onto the body. I sold the first head which was the SA Bernard I had but kept the OE one although he no longer has a body maybe I’ll restring his old one or perhaps I should get him a new one :abambi:

    40. Iplehouse FID Oscar :)

I stumbled across BJD’s in 2021 for the second time, but this time as an adult with money. I got so excited I didn’t take a whole ton of time to research before I found his listing on eBay. I knew I wanted a boy, I thought he was cool, I snagged him. I had zero idea of any companies, styles, anything, but knew enough to watch out for recasts, so when I saw he had his paperwork I was like MINE.

Took me 2 years to actually bond with him. I almost sold him, but then I redid his faceup, and now he’s one of my favorites. Once I figured out how to really LOOK at the offerings, I discovered my style of doll is not generally what Iplehouse offers. But this story ended happily regardless xD

    41. my first doll is my profile pic, cloverdoll echo! she's gone through 2 faceups and a body swap since I took that photo.

I remember exactly how it was when I got her...I was at my uncle's house for thanksgiving and was on my phone after dinner scrolling the junkyspot black friday sale (remember those?). I had just started getting into dolls earlier that year, but not BJDs yet. I saw cloverdoll echo in the sale for like 40% off the full doll with company faceup and reasoned, this one will be mostly "complete" and she's cheap, so let's try her and see if we like this or not!

      and so the journey began...

    42. Dollzone Carter, and it was his smile. I love that dolls little sharp teeth.

The first doll I saw that dragged me into the hobby was Soom's Gluino Vampire. When I saw him I wanted him, but he was discontinued. 75cm seemed huge to me, and the fullset one I saw going for sale was over $2,000 not something I was willing to take the plunge with on my first doll.

I kept looking and finally I saw Dollzone Carter. I got him from the Clover Singing eBay store. He got lost in the mail coming to me. Dollzone never did find him, and they sent me a new one. It took over 8 months for me to get him. After that wait I have learned patience when it comes to dolls getting home to me!

Funny thing I did eventually get a Soom's Gluino Vampire, and he also got lost in the mail! Soom was very good about helping me track the package down, so shout out to them for that! I was in a state of panic while he was lost. But he was found in New York and eventually got home to me.

The first doll I wanted and the first doll I got both got lost in the mail. It's crazy how that happened. Thankfully I have them both safely at home now. Hopefully no more dolls get lost in transport.

    43. My first bjd was Dollndoll Noel, I had to choose between her and Dollpire Shiloh. I adore vampires, but eventually bought Noel - I was charmed with her big ears and tranquil look. And also she was simply a bit cheaper :"D I was still attending school at that time, and I can't say I had a lot of pocket money... I remember dragging my mom to the bank, so she could help me with making a transaction (we didn't even have PayPal back then, it was such a long time ago!) Dollndoll was closed eventually, and my lovely Noel has a new owner now, since my tastes in bjds changed a lot, but I'll be forever grateful for the memories. Oh and I still have a preference towards dolls with big ears ^^

    44. My first doll was an Impldoll Imara on the Star Model Body. I don’t really remember which other sculpts I was considering at the time, but I do remember how I kept going back to her photos again and again—something about her just really drew me in.

I’m honestly so happy she ended up being my first. She posed beautifully and made the whole experience feel really rewarding. I remember being so careful with her at first, terrified I’d break one of her joints. But as I tested her posing, I was surprised by how sturdy she actually was.

Eventually, though, I realized I’m more drawn to collecting male BJDs—gotta build my little BL kingdom—so I ended up rehoming her.

    45. My first doll was Loongsoul Reno (since gotten rid of...)
At the time I honestly wasn't super versed in everything about bjd... and affection lot of sculpts i had seen years prior were long discontinued. When I saw him though he was so rugged and handsome looking, and the company face up was gorgeous! Sadly though I didn't realize just how big he'd be at around 73cm tall... but he was my only doll for years. He was so special.
