Your non-BJD Grail?

Nov 30, 2019

    1. My non-bjd grail at the moment is the 30th anniversary Little Mermaid doll where she is a mermaid. Ariel and I are the same age, and she was my favorite growing up. One time I got a really nice Ariel doll as a kid, after pleading with my dad and his friend who worked at the warehouse convincing him it wasn't too expensive. Unfortunately the same day I took it home I was playing with it, throwing it in the air I think like a baby, and dropped it. Her head popped off and it didn't go back on right. This was before the internet so we couldn't have looked up how to fix it easily. We were able to return it and I got the ugly mermaid doll instead

I do have one of the non limited edition mermaid Ariel, and she's keeping the spot warm. I tried bidding on one but price got too high at the close. Maybe one day! Something about her 30th anniversary being the same year as my 30th birthday just makes me more nostalgic for the whole thing.

    2. The Barbie Haunted Beauty series. Mattel released a collector line of four dolls for $100 each, and scalpers- er, resellers, are selling them for between $250 and $750 each.

    3. I don't think these exist, but I would love to find 12-inch action figures, with cloth costumes, of Hammer Horror icons, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing from the 1958 horror classic, Horror of Dracula.

I'm a huge classic horror movie fan, and have a nice collection of horror movie greats, like Bella Lugosi, Boris Karloff, and Vincent Price. I also have a number of Sideshow Universal Monsters figures like Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon. So, I would dearly love to find Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing figures to add to my collection. They were great friends in real-life, and awesome together on film. :thumbup

    4. Star Ace released a un/licensed(?) Christopher Lee as Dracula figure back in 2017. It is now of course sold-out everywhere, but it was based on Scars of Dracula, and not on Horror of Dracula. Both films, which I did watch when I was a child, but haven't re-watched in forever; I don't remember the costume being too different in either, but I know they were at least ten years apart. I didn't see owner photos, so I can't say how accurate their head sculpt looked in-hand. I have never owned figures by them either, so I can't say whether the figure is worth looking for or not. I recall there being a creature figure, but I don't remember if it was from a horror film, or just inspired by. If you are interested in horror collectibles, Sideshow has a lot of licensed figures and status from various licenses, most of the time -- not necessarily all based on horror films, but they do release a bit of horror every now and then.

Sideshow actually has The Creature From The Black Lagoon, for pre-order right now. It says it's a variant, so I don't know if they have other versions as well. (:

    6. I’m soooo excited! She is on order right now.

    8. I have a new grail to report.

"On Campaign in the Age of Napoleon" with Keith Rocco illustrations. It's a limited 1000 run of books and stupid hard to find.

I have an easier time finding a 100 year old book about making terrible sandwiches.

    9. My book grail was the Ineffable illustrated edition of Good Omens, came out with extra ephemera around the time of the TV series. Money being very much an object, I bought the regular illustrated edition.

Other grail objects: a LIST of very expensive dice, tbh, but like, the most wildly expensive ones I lust after are opalite.
A 1/4 scale handcarved carousel horse
A Kitchenaid artisan stand mixer in mint green

And a bathroom of my own, but I'm really hoping to make that a reality soon.

    10. I remembered one more, just poking around on my eBay recently...

I really, really want the Jun Planning version statue of Victor from the Corpse Bride. That movie ignited such a passion for puppetry, and I still find it so inspiring. I can't believe they managed to make such thin puppets... still blows me away.

    11. A bathtub. XD I love taking hot baths, but most of apartments only have showers.

A dog, but I know that I don't have the time or capacity to take properly care of it, so it's a grail.

As for a more "material" object, I would love a dollhouse, but I don't have space, so it remains a dream (for now).

    12. Cuarto Hecate didn't work out for my wolf character Emie, so I would like to get an art doll of her made. Stalking so many cute puppers on Etsy.

    13. The Mamachapp 1/6 Lucky Star character dolls.

What can I say? I'm a weeb who grew up in the 2000s, and Lucky Star was and remains so iconic to me. Super duper nostalgic. Ideally I'd love to own them all, but even if I could just own Konata I'd be happy. I have so much trouble finding these cuties... they're always cheap when they go up for sale secondhand, but they go lightning quick!

Also, every single piece of Killua Zoldyck merch under the sun. I'm basic, I know, but he's my son and at this point I'm building a shrine. I love him so much I'm currently working on a custom of him.

    16. I actually got mine a little bit ago, the Kotobukiya Mass Effect Commander Shepard Limited Edition, because she looks JUST like my first time I played Mass Effect with the black hair. That set me back a pretty penny but I love her!

Now I'd probably say my grail is either a PlayArts KAI Balthier from FFXII or maybe finishing my Koto set from Mass Effect with Liara?

    17. I also collect limited edition Disney dolls so for me it would be the d23 pink Ariel who was released for her anniversary in 2019. The last time I saw her for sale she was about 4000€ so not going to happen :D

    18. a 1/6 Hatsune Miku headsculpt that totally sells her to me, and can readily be transplanted to the OBITSU BODY 26cm.

    19. Pulip Princess Serenity to go with the Luna I have. Disney 17 inch live action Cinderella in her pretty ballgown, 17 inch wedding Rapunzel, and the 10 year anniversary Rapunzel doll

    20. Aahmas from Tonner's Deja Vu line! I think she's gorgeous <3

    21. My non-BJD (but still doll-related) grails are definitely Groove Inc. Sasha Pippin and Kiki! Their aesthetics are DIVINE, exactly the kind of thing I like! Pippin with his all-gold look and Kiki's Napolean-looking uniform, they're brilliant to look at! Their prices secondhand aren't the worst I've ever seen, but I just don't see them often, so actually finding them will be the hard part.

Another "doll" I've been into lately (it's not meant to be played with, so you could argue they're fabric figurines, really) are Big-Eye dolls or Bradley dolls. They were like boudoir dolls, posed in certain ways and moreso meant for decoration. I love the face style of them, their hair looks so silky despite them being vintage now, and the fashions were so cute! Though, I mostly am interested in male or androgynous dolls that blur the lines of gender, so I think I'll get crafty and make my own version that suits my style/collection better. I wouldn't mind having a couple of the actual girls if I can make some boy/nonbinary companions for them that reasonably match the style.
My only issue is the price. They tend to be $50+ for what is essentially a felt figurine in clothes and hair you can't change and I just don't know if I can justify it to myself right now. But I'll keep an open mind and maybe one will grab me so much, it'll change that!

    22. This Kotobukiya 1/6 scale Misato Katsuragi figure which is fragile and from 2005 so whenever it does show up on the secondhand market in good shape it’s easily 400-600 USD. Hard to justify that when I can get an articulated custom SD for the same price, or even cheaper if I buy secondhand.

Outside of dolls/figures there’s some rare books and manuscripts I would love to have but I don’t have the right housing/storage to preserve them and I definitely do not have several grand to drop on a book.

    23. Do anime DVD sets count? Right now I'd love to get my hands on a full series set for Monster, the new Fruits Basket series, and (not an anime series exactly, but...) the season sets from Batman the Animated Series that I don't currently have.

This one is more a wish fulfillment thing, but… I'd love some kind of figurines or dolls of certain characters from Star Wars the Old Republic (SWTOR for short). Theron Shan, Lana Beniko, or any of the various PCs I've created in-game—just gimme them, please!:XD:

    24. I would love an Azone Sugar Cups Mint Chocolate girl...

      • x 1
    25. My non bjd grail would be My Little Pony Baby Minty. Unfortunately for me she's over 30 years old and was only made in Greece. Add to the fact that I only want the white haired variant and it gets even trickier. She always seems to show up when I don't have the money to afford her.
One of my others is something I could get but just don't think about it when I have doll money which is Middle Blythe Macaroon Q-Tea Party.
She was the first Middle Blythe I fell in love with and would love to sometime add her to my collection of Blythe/Pullip style dolls.

    26. I have a similar grail, now that I think about it! I'd love a French Windy. Probably the only MLP I'd ever want lol

    27. My non bjd grail would be a original caprice doll

    28. My non bjd grail is a platinum Gameboy Advance in mint condition and Pokemon Gold both with boxes and inserts. I had them as a child but they were sold away at one point.

      • x 1
    29. A gold cart. Ocarina of Time. I saw one for $25 at an old game store I used to visit, never had a chance to go back for it. Now it's $100+

    30. My non BJD grail is a Kitty Check-Up with accessories, I've only been looking for her on and off for fifteen years with no luck... :atremblin Quite possibly the cutest toy ever made in my opinion. I had her when I was a kid but she got garage sale'd without my consent :...(

    31. Oh she does look cute! I hope you find her. Childhood toys are the best.

    32. i have a non-BJD and non-doll related grail i'm saving up for right now: a brand new Fujifilm X-T5 digital camera <3

    33. the nendoroid for goro akechi from persona 5. i *could* buy him rn, but paying $200 for a nendo that was originally released at $30-40 when they have the possibility of rereleasing him hurts me too damn much, as lonely as my joker nendo is. goodsmilecompany... please...

    34. I've got...a few lol. My current book grail is the 1929 ed of Theisen&Leonard's Real Life Stories, with a complete hardback set of Brian Jacques' Redwall series coming in second. My always & forever car grail is a 65-67 era Impala in cream/pale yellow (not sure what the color is actually called in car speak). And to round out the non-toy section, dvd/bluray/whatever copies of the 1997 ver of Little Men, the complete series of Roar and Young Hercules.

There are a couple vintage baby/squeaky toys I would love to get my grubby not so little hands on. The Statue of Liberty Barbie got her hooks into me years ago. She's probably the most readily attainable/available, but other things always come up and I still haven't bought her yet. And for other dolls - would love love love a repro (or dreaming super high the actual one) of Beth's doll from the 1994(?) ver of Little Women. A 1/12 or scale or two down dollhouse - not as a doll display or anything, just the house & all the tiny trimmings bc Ive always been in love with tiny things. Oooooh and the ST QPoskets, spec. Steve & Eddie. And bc I am ridiculous, the 5" Berit the moth & 8" Perkin (mothman) squishmallows.

On a completely personal level, my mother's doll from when she was a little girl. Unfortunately she is in the "care" of another relative and the last time I saw her, I wanted to cry @ the shape she was in.

    35. Mine is the Mastermind Creations Reformatted: R-10 Salvia Prominon Transformer figure. She's just so beautiful:
But people have her at upwards of $300 and she's just too small a figure for me to justify it. But i always wanted a pastel Transformer and when i learned her existence it was too late. She is my white whale..

    40. Do books count? I want the complete, 28-volume set of Koike and Kojima's historical manga Lone Wolf and Cub published by Dark Horse Comics.

And I want to buy the complete set, all at once, without having to hunt secondhand for individual volumes. I narrowly missed buying a full set of volumes off eBay for a ridiculously low price -- in my country no less! -- because I behaved myself and didn't impulse buy the moment I saw it, and ever since then I've been kicking myself about being too frugal at the wrong time.

    41. Only a couple-three days ago or so i added a "Grail" to the family!!

stumbling upon this pair of unrelated girls sold as a lot for less than $50 each,
i finally found the opportunity i've been waiting on for years

    42. American Girl Just like you doll #21. I wanted her as a kid but never got her. She doesn’t even look like me lol But I think she’s so cute. She’s discontinued now, but maybe I’ll snag one off eBay one day.

My other grails were My Little Pony Wysteria and Bratz Fashion Pixiez Yasmin. And I did end up finding both in great condition!

    43. Mine is a doll I am lucky to own. The story is quite quick actually, because she's an ooak pullip released in January 2024. Since she was unique and quite expensive, I missed her when she got for sale and thought I'd never get a chance to have her again, but by miracle, I found her owner and she sold her last month. Even though I was short on budget, I decided to try my luck and get her, almost missed her because she was theoretically already on hold for someone, but I was lucky enough to have her in the end and now I am the happiest. I never thought I'd have a pullip one day, but it seems like she was the one made for me :love

    45. I have one grail for each type of doll I collect and I've been fortunate to bring all of mine home. In no particular order:
      • Dollfie Dream Mariko summer festival version (though DDs' status as BJD or not is up for debate)
      • Smartdoll Semi-real Fortitude in tea skin
      • Blythe Vinter Arden

    46. I have a couple! Off the top of my head...
      Dollwise:
      • Dollfie Dreams: Utena Tenjou and Anthy Himemiya fullsets, and Rise Kujikawa (head only for a custom)
      • Integrity Toys: 7 Sins: Wrath Nu Face Tantrum Erin Salston
      • Pullip: Dal Joujou and The Angelic Pretty Sugarary Carnival Fashion Pack
      • Jenny/Licca Chan: Jenny×Kera× Angelic Pretty collab doll (I just got her, I'm so happy!)
      Anime Figures:
Too many tbh! I have my eye on a ton of Mikus and some Evangelion scales though!

Slowly but surely hunting things down through out the yearsI love seeing what other things people collect!
