Your favorite clothing to buy/make?

Nov 22, 2018

    1. Do you find yourself dressing your dolls in the same type of look? Is there something you enjoy making that you subconciously realize most of your bjd now have?

Post a photo or you can comment.

In my case it's JUMPSUITS! I love a good stretchy jumpsuit. They are cool but look better on dolls anyway....

    2. Big cozy sweaters are my thing. I'm still learning how to sew so I haven't made anything useable, but I've ordered or wish listed similar sweaters and cardigans for all of my dolls. I hadn't really thought about it till I saw this post, but I may need to readjust some plans so everyone isn't always twinning!

    3. I love dresses! I’m still perfecting my sewing pattern, but they’re just so cute! And, if they’re simple, they don’t take too long to make :)

    4. I'm a fan of replicating historical clothing, too many eras to choose a favorite.

    5. dresses with big poofy frilly skirts. my skirts would only be perfect if i can spread them into a circle. xDDD

of course i like to try out other fashions too, like tops & bikinis & sweaters (i am currently figuring out pants for iplehouse curvaceous bottoms) but fantasy EGL style dresses are my fave.

    6. Recently realized that I am in love with everything knitted, sweaters, dresses, vests, etc.

    7. I just ordered my doll (I mean... head) so I still have a lot to do before buying/making clothes (for example buying it's body :'D)

BUT! I do have an idea in my head, what type of clothing I want for the doll. I'm in love with shorts, they're so... Not masculine, not feminine, ideal for doll-teenager. I'm also looking for a coat, I think every doll needs at least one good coat/jacket in their wardrobe.

Besides that I'm typical Volks lover, I adore laces and light, soft, white dresses.

    8. Turtlenecks!!!

Super tight ones, floppy loose ones... I feel like plain black turtlenecks have that classic beatnik appeal, so I don't have to dress them up fancy. Formfitting turtleneck + black leggings is all I need.

    9. Oversized sweaters. I love making them. I love forcing my dolls to wear them. Everyone who follows me is probably sick of the sweaters by now xD They're just so cozy and cute and simple to make.

    10. Fantasy, frilly & tattered dresses from antique lace Just sort of stitching stuff together, trying it on & adjust to basically fit. Haven't made any for a long time but they're calling me again.

    11. I am addicted to graphic t-shirts and I custom order them a few times a year. My dolls have band shirts, movie shirts, tv show shirts, attitude shirts, fandom shirts--anything a real person can buy! I just spent $70 on more...

    12. honestly i love sweaters so much..... i really want to get (or...make????) a fitted turtleneck for my main msd boy. sweaters are just so cute!! and my dolls dress like total normies lol so im happy to get a lot of them.

lately i've been thinking about buying a really nice coat for one of them, but i worry so much about fit that it's sort of nervewracking to shell out the cash for one ^^' i don't have the skill to make it myself yet (and may never), and i want something with a lot of attention to detail, but i'd hate to get it in the mail only to find out it's too big or too small. so, sweaters, for now.....

    13. It's expensive for me, so I'm not buying it everyday, but I do love formal clothes like cocktail dresses or suits.

    14. Kimonos. I love making them all kimonos. I don't know why I do but nearly everyone of my dolls has one.

      • x 2
    15. I really love sweaters, mori dresses, and darker colors like black or greys.

    16. A lot of my crew are in vaguely historical Asian outfits, and that's what I'm best at making...

… But I also love big, floofy, lace-EVERYWHERE, frufru girly-girl dresses. I'm no good at making those, though, so I have to buy them all. They're sort of my guilty pleasure.

    17. I uh... realized I'm pretty into pastel anything. Lol. I went from 2 pastel themed dolls to everyone has a pastel something whether they like it or not. Completely selfish on my part!

    18. My favorite doll clothing items to make are items which are super detailed, preferably somewhat inspired by historical fashion, and ridiculous--why else would I make it for a doll and not for me?

The things I hate to make are socks (because they're lame) and <1/4th scale bras (because they're fiddly).

My favorite thing to buy are miniature sweaters because I can't knit.

    19. I am weak for suits and tail coats. Freedomteller has all my money and I sew the more historical themed coats I can't buy. I love making fishtail trousers.

    20. I'm into needlepoint felting right now! I'm making top hats and whatnot :)

    21. Oh what is your current favorite era to work from?

    22. Right now I'm in the very slow process of making an 1880s bustle dress.

    23. Dresses are the easiest because it's enought to dress a doll and it's easy to put on.
Sometimes, I makes trousers and t-shirts, stitch vest... but it's so much more work.
It's not that I'm lasy but I'm so impatient to see my dolls ready!

    24. I like women's stockings for dolls. I have a large collection of stockings with different colors and patterns. It's all for my boys :kitty2

    25. I like making Vintage/Victorian inspired clothes for my doll

      • x 1
    26. That's funny because I actually really don't like making stockings at all. I prefer to buy them!

    27. I looooove dolls in hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing). Guess that explains why the first three dolls I'm buying are all character doll fullsets in hanfu. I also love Japanese clothes (kimono, hakama, and yukata).

    28. I love lace dresses and woollen hats.

    29. I absolutely love fantasy/medieval style clothing. I prefer them to be made by a very good seamstress that puts in a lot of detail. I love detailed clothing.

    30. I love casual clothes, but ordinary fit. A lot of bjd jeans are really tight/thin and I’m not a fan of that. I also love boots & trainers. I just find them cute because they’re so small. I always liked baby shoes but never wanted kids. Now I have an excuse to buy cute tiny shoes!

    31. I truly feel artistic inside...but the reality is very different! My skills only stretch to beanie hats...badly crocheted!

    32. I fell in love with kimonos for dollies. They're just so cute! I'm super into Japanese fashion whether it's traditional or street fashion and I just died. The colors were beautiful and similar to a kimono one would buy for themselves. I was truly amazed!

    33. This is a great thread! My favourite clothing is Indian inspired and heavily beaded, but I also love making fantasy style kimonos and cutesy retro (think 1950s and early 60s full skirts with massive bows). And as you said we could share a picture, here is my fave girl in her latest outfit:

    34. Leggings! I live in them in real life for comfort, and I love dressing dolls in them because they're cute and versatile. You can have fun patterns and textures on leggings that you don't see on jeans or other pants. And they're easy to make!

    35. HAHA... I totally agree! I love Turtlenecks and guys look so handsome in them^^ I might have ordered a few last week xD

    36. Haha, I keep thinking I'll one day have a bunch of bright and/or pastel colored clothing on my dolls, but so far everyone seems to be into muted autumn colors (so much brown with some reds/oranges/golds) and black. :sweat Style-wise I'm all over the place, but whether it's fantasy or historical or modern, they seem to like comfortable, simple things. I personally love dapper clothing and would love to go for that look sometime!

    37. I make dresses most, but I like pajama pants best. Couple seams, do the elastic, boom, you're done.

    38. i like making shirts the best! (they seem to be the easiest for me) and i find myself buying more and more clothes with a ‘kawaii’ look even though i most certainly dont need more!

    39. I am a big fan of Renaissance clothing, some I make, some I buy.

    40. I do follow you and I am not tired of seeing them. xD I am also addicted to sweaters for my dolls. I love how comfortable and normal they feel. Slowly over time all of my dolls have ended up with several sweaters of their own.

    41. I live for casual street style ♡ It sounds kinda boring at first but I just love when BJD boys have that cool quirky asian street fashion look! Potentially paired with some edgy and individual accessories **

    42. I love, love, love making mini-versions of cosplays, and historical clothing. It's so much fun, and definitely worth the millions of times I've stabbed myself with a needle trying to hand-stitch hems.

    43. I've made (or am making) the same waistcoat and skirt for several of the girls in my family of Victorian children. Mostly it's the fabrics that differ:

I have several more cut out and part sewn for my other girls.

And this dress is another favourite I make over and over:

And then there's my favourite top-down knitted jumper (self patterning sock-yarns work so well for these) :

    44. At the moment, detachable collars and bow ties. Bat wing collar didn’t go as planned.

    45. In terms of sewing, I enjoy wasai (traditional Japanese garments) the most. I'm still learning how to tackle modern casual and formal pieces.

I like to buy fitted formal suits/shirts/coats, and detailed streetwear. My rule of thumb is that if it's beyond my skill level, it's better for me to buy it.

    46. I love sewing dresses. Cute shapes and nice, simple skirts, plus you don't have to worry about pairing a top and pants with it. I also enjoy knitting sweaters and cardigans, plus the occasional pair of socks and leggings.

I love buying pants and basic tops, because I keep not sewing those myself!

    47. For the past couple of years, I’ve really been enjoying making lolita-esque ruffled skirt/bloomers/puffy-sleeved blouse combos. Sometimes I make them from a single fabric with decorative lace, and sometimes I get crazy with mixing patterns from leftover fabrics from other projects. It’s so-o-o-o much work because I sew all the gathers and ruffles by hand (not to mention all those tiny buttons and button-holes!):sweat But I love the end result for my dolls and I love the creative process of it.

    48. I made a tube top just because it was really simple. I'm still learning but I hope to improve! My older sister made some doll clothing for me for my birthday and even though she had never done it before she's great at sewing and the clothing came out beautifully. The coat she made even had a tiny zipper!

    49. My favourite is just basic fashion. Common t-shirts or long sleeved raglans, basic shorts, pants, button up shirts, and even a few hoodies. Some simple skirts and dresses for the girls as well. I like stuff they wear all the time every day. I enjoy changing clothes a few times a year. I like them to have a wide variety in just everyday wear.

I do enjoy sometimes tackling something new to sew or make, but when it comes down to it, I honestly enjoy the simple fashion.

    50. Kimono! To sew or to buy, I just love them.

edit to add a pic of one of the set I sewed:

    51. I mostly sew casual modern clothing, but it's been my ambition for quite a while to make Renaissance outfits for all my dolls, as accurately as possible.

    52. I was going for fantasy and Victorian/Edwardian at first but I’m getting more into modern/goth lately and it’s been fun

    53. My favourite is suits for my dolls, the more intricate the better for me. All the little details just makes it more appealing to me but terrible for my hands.

    55. I am also a huge fan of sewing dresses. It's probably the majority of what I make the last few years.
I get overwhelmed trying to pair separates sometimes :sweat but when I feel like more of those some of my other favorite things are sewing knit fabric shirts and wide leg unisex rave pants.

    56. i always end up being most drawn to sewing overly ambitious dresses based on human-sized couture. those kinds of projects always take the longest and involve the most difficulty and sometimes frustration, but they're also the most gratifying to finish. i tend to avoid sewing basics until i end up needing one to make an outfit with a more statement-y garment i've made :sweat

    57. Frilly and lacy dresses that lean more into a natural theme; especially those made with cotton, linen, silk, or hemp.

    58. To make... now that I've gotten into crochet I've done a few little cardigans!
To buy... pants, so that I DON'T have to make them.

      • x 1
    59. I have a bonnet problem... I want a matching bonnet for every dress!! :...( Naturally, I want to buy and make the frilliest dresses for my dolls to balance out their headwear.

    60. Same here - except I can seldom find them with high enough waists for the period styles I prefer my boys in.
