Hey guys. I've posted before about my Black Cat boy anime-type doll and the concept I've been working on with a purely black and white faceup and clothing. Today I started the "blushing" portion just to get used to the whole thing. Here's the concepts just so we know what we're working with. I'm kind of sad that his skin isn't quite as white as I wanted. Initially my plan was to get one of the Luts Anidelf models in Zuzu white, which would be the starkest white color resin I can get... But ultimately, I fell in love with Black Cat and the Dollzone bodies rather than the Luts Tiny20. So here's the steps I'm taking to build him: ✖ Body Blush ✖ Faceup ✖ DIY Eye setup ✖ Fur Wig Styling ✖ Clothing Modification And once I've gotten to know him better, I'll be developing his persona and name. He hasn't quite told me who he is yet. Like I said, today was body blushing layer 1 and I went ahead and made his DIY eyes as well. I'm not sure I'm happy with them but honestly, I think I only got one chance to do these, so I'll need to buy another set if I need to redo it. Black Cat came with 14mm eyes but these have smaller irises - I actually like this better, and they fit better in his sockets. Shown here being tested in his face. ... i wonder if there's a way to get those blanks back out now. probably not. Next is the first layer of blushing, which was done with watercolor pencil. It's not as even as I wanted, but this is my first time doing pencil on MSC. But I think this looks pretty cool. --------DOLL NUDITY----------- So next step is gonna be another layer of MSC and then maybe acrylic paint, then another layer of msc. But first, faceup. I'm nervous as hell. Incidentally, is the kneaded eraser taking the MSC off? I'm actually worried about that.
Just went ahead and did the first layer of faceup. I like it, at least for my first project, but I'm hoping it'll look cleaner when I do another layer. Tomorrow I'll put on another coat of MSC. I did specifically color the rims of his eyes in this case. I think it'll look better and give him a better follow-me appearance.
Oooh, he's coming together quite nicely! I love how dainty his body blushing looks. His faceup is adorable, too; I'm excited to see him all put together!
Super cool design idea! Also you mentioned not enjoying the eyes too much, you ever consider using glass domes for it? This tutorial goes over it in a bit more detail how to. (I really enjoy them in my black cat gal) Spoiler Edit: tossed in spoiler cause she uses one of her smart dolls as the model, and they aren't on-topic dolls for forums >.>);;; its really cool technique tho
I think your notion of doing him as a black and white manga-style is fascinating. Looking forward to the final result! That is just downright fascinating! I've got to find more examples. Getting eyes to track is one of the most important parts of photostorytelling!
it's pretty fun. I did a handful of tests to see what sorta materials I like the look off. this is the only one of the tests I took pictures of which was something I drew on the pc and printed out. (she doesn't have her face up yet and it was a temp wig when I took this) Spoiler
I’d love to do eyes like this! But I’m not sure they have blanks this size for him, they’re 12-14 mm. I’ll do some research. I was trying to figure out what SmartDoll was doing with theirs.
74% humidity and chance of rain today No MSC layer yet. Aaaaagh. maybe I’ll work on his hair. I have a fur wig and I need to learn to style it.
Also I just looked into this, yes, I'm definitely going to get the cabochons. I've noticed some are more flat and some are more round - should I be getting the super round ones? Where would you recvommend getting them?
I got these ones from amazon and think it was the 12mm that worked best with the sockets? (I got the multi pack cause I got a few dolls of various sizes) I would suggest more rounded, but mostly for the visual effect on following effect? never tried the more flat ones, so entirely basing that on my knowledge how domed lenses work in cameras for various effects xD
He is looking so good! I absolutely adore his concept and I've never personally seen anyone do that kind of blushing before! I might have to steal it if that's okay? OwO
Of course! I didn’t think I was the first person to try this. Eventually I’d like to create a Junji Ito doll like this.
Oh my goodness! He's so cute! I've never seen anyone paint a doll in this style before. I love his body blushing so much! With only a few marks, you've managed to give the illusion of fur...
Oh no! Yes, to my eyes it definitely gave off the impression of short fur. The sketchiness of the lines, and the way they're mostly in line with each other instead of cross hatched...It's the same kind of technique cartoon/manga artists and oldschool Disney animation suggest fur without drawing it in too fluffy. Given that he's a Black Cat boy, I thought you must have meant it to come off that way...
No, not all hatching has to be cross hatching necessarily. I use straight and scratchy lines in my sketches for shading and blush... I just wanted to make him look like an ink drawing. If it looks like fur, I’m scared that other people will see it that way. Maybe I should just redo the whole thing...
personally I would say wait before changing anything. once the doll is all together the comic style will probably be more clear. (might be cause I do similar things in my own art, it didn't look anything like fur too me ><) Also you mentioned the junji ito styled doll and that would be amazing to see :0
Thank you, I just got sad last night and I’m fine now LOL. I’m happy with the progress so far. And yes, I’d love to make one of the Crossroads Pretty Boy probably.
Update! Weather was good so I did his second faceup coat and another round of MSC. And then I restrung him... And it was extremely painful. Originally I replaced his strings because he was incredibly tight when I got him. Now I'm worried that he's even tighter than before. I'm not sure what to do now. I really struggled doing his legs on my own. But for now... He's done, faceup and blush wise. Ignore my background, I'm doing this in the downstairs den where all the LEGO and laundry is... I have to keep reminding myself this is literally my first faceup ever. When I had my Luts boy, I shelled out extra for the faceup and all the bells and whistles, and I didn't want to do that again. Plus I can always redo him later. But I'm pretty happy with him for now. And now, we try some of his clothes on. To go with the manga look, all his clothes are only allowed to be black and white LOL. I have more from Pabadoll and Alice's coming this month, and those will show off more of his blush. Next step is fixing this wig... he looks like a 2007 scene kid. Great, now I have to learn to cut hair. He still doesn't have a name, but I like these clothes. Incidentally, even though he's a YOSD, his "character" isn't supposed to be a kid. I'm thinking of him more in his early 20's. (which is why I have no problem dressing him like that) I know that's weird with how he looks, but eh.
Yeah, not all hatching needs to be crosshatching, I know. I only meant that in this instance, the way the hatching was done made it appear more fur-like to me. But I may be the outlier on that opinion... He looks very cute in his outfit! I don't think it's odd to have him be in his 20s, even though he's a YoSD type of doll. It just makes him look more manga-like, I think.
It’s fine, I’m just easily discouraged sometimes ;w; thank you! I’m really happy with how cute he is so far.
well... For a guy who doesn’t even know how to style his own hair, I guess it’s not bad for a first try.
For now he’s basically done. I’m gonna fix up his eyes but I think the cabochons I got are too small and flat. I’m also considering making his mouth a frown instead of a smile, but I’m not sure. and then I need to fix more clothes for him
OH CUTE! I love him-- he looks like he stepped out of a comic book and into the real world, that's such a great concept and the execution is absolutely darling.
I'm not educated in Manga, but this guy's got a lot of character, great realization of your concept! Adorbs!
This is such a cool concept and he's looking amazing so far! I've always loved with people do the stylization lines for cosplay but I've never seen anyone try it with a doll before
