Modification Yet Another Mod: Moira, Male to Female: Minifee Muscle Girl

Feb 22, 2014

    1. Artist's foreword: Yes, I am constantly modding something. Yes, it makes me happy, so I'll probably keep doing it. Yes I have several other projects on. Yes, each of them will get done in due time, don't worry. ;)

I glanced at a very feminine pic of someone's Minifee Muscle bodied boy, (I don't recall which) and for a moment I saw something else. The idea stuck with me- a Minifee girl with muscles, but still very much a girl. Her own different kind of beautiful. That vision captivated me, and I had to create this doll. She'll fit very nicely into a fantasy story I've been pondering in which the main cast is mostly girls.

So far she's just a male body I bought and have been modding. Eventually I'll get her a head and a sleeping head; I've already chosen which sculpt. Here's where we started, for a reference. A Minifee A-Line Muscle boy in NS. Ignore the horse, please. :|

First, the obvious- Removing the male genitals and replacing them. I haven't finished by giving her labia yet, but here's how far this part's gotten. I also removed all the seams on this hip piece.

I've been removing seams as I go. I've found I like dolls without visible seams when I can get them that way. For any of my own dolls I mod, I've started just doing seam sanding as a matter of course, while I have them in pieces anyway.

Then, reshaping the abs. Most women have generally different abdominal shapes than men, and every individual has different ab shapes anyway.
This is a nice soft shape for a slim and athletic girl, but the gal I am making here has even less body fat, so I'll need more definition than this. Still, I will remember this shape when I do other sculpting work.
On many women, the outline of the main "sixpack" muscle set is like a chubby vase sort of shape. I added the bottom edge of the ribcage above the stomach muscles, and I have scraped away a teeny bit of the waist on each side, to give the impression of the hourglass torso slim women have, resulting from the curve of their hips and how the muscles anchor to it. Much of female anatomy is determined by the bowl shape of their hips- men's hips are more of a box.

Here's the lower-body-fat, redefined abs, and the chest piece.
All that sanding changed the resin tone of some places a little, so I will have to blush and sand to get it all to match again. Not a problem.
I've scraped and sanded down the "adam's apple" of the throat, which does not protrude on a woman as it does on a man.
I sanded off the male nipples so they'd quit distracting my eye as I try to position the female breasts over the pectoral muscle.
Seams also got sanded again, wherever I found them.

The Apoxie here is tinted so I can cover it easier- blueish grey Apoxie is harder to paint over and blend into the NS than peach-brown. The breasts of a woman with this much muscle definition and this low of body-fat are usually quite small, and her muscle tone would give them a nice perky shape, perhaps. Breast tissue in humans sits right on top of Pectoral muscle but does not necessarily cover it entirely, especially if the pecs are large and the breasts are smaller.

      Update, 3/23

Here is the current muscle body next to a Minifee female body with "small" (medium) bust.
Now, I tried, and tried, and tried to get the paint to blend into the resin, but here is my Modification Achilles Heel- I can't get that to look smooth. I probably won't until I learn to use an airbrush. I realized after failing the 8th or 9th time that what I was trying to paint over would be almost always clothed anyway, and for the rare exception I could smooth it out in PS. Someday I shall redo this with an airbrush, but not right now. So for now, I painted it to be close to the resin color, and then got on with making her some underwear.

Here's her bra: kind of clumsy, but I have her character in a fantasy setting, not a modern one. Her clothes aren't going to look modern. I plan to post stuff I sew for her here, probably in a second thread, because she's going to require custom clothes. Stuff that fits either male or female MNF bodies won't fit her.

Here's one more shot of her in her little mini-shorts and bra. I can't wait to get her a proper head and do her blushing and faceup. Aithne there next to her is a MNF/Unoa Sist Hybrid.

    2. 5/19

Now that I have moved into a place with a yard, I can spray sealant whenever the weather permits. This let me get on with my Minifee mod project.

(Good News: Gradually I will be moving my studio operations here to my home, and when I have an In-House studio I get a LOT more work done.)

I was able to blush Moira and give her the scars appropriate to someone who fights. I got her a head set at last, and those got faceupped to match. She is a Minifee Mirwen sculpt. (In this pic her entire chest piece looks like it really doesn't match the rest of her, but that's an optical illusion- only her breasts do not match.)

Here's a close look at that faceup and her hand with all the little scars and nicks on it.
The only thing I've left undone is to give a touch of satin gloss to her fingernails and lips, and that's because I don't have my gloss here at my house.

Here's the full effect of head finally on shoulders! I am so excited to finally have her in one piece! I was worried the head wouldn't match the dynamism of the body, but I think the Mirwen sculpt's strong brows and resolute expression make it work.
(Yes, I know her breasts don't match the resin- I got it as close as I could, and gave her a hint of nipples so she wouldn't look too weird to me, but she's never gonna be in shoots fully topless so it doesn't matter that the paint is not perfect.)

Here's how she looks so far! I've made her a burnt orange tunic and these little cropped short pants. I tried to make her some shoes but I am not happy with the results yet. Besides, she needs boots. I'll have to make them myself because no one sells what I want her to wear. Sigh, story of almost all my dolly wardrobes. I think this here is what she'd wear while she's working out- just pants and her 'bra' top.

I made these shoes a few years back for my Medieval Reenactment hobby, and I wear them all the time for comfort. Since they are quite simple in structure, I opted to duplicate them for Moira to have some casual footwear. (*history soapbox* These are often called Ghillie Brogues or "bog" shoes, and are a very simple shoe of a type worn in many parts of Northwestern Europe, from the early Dark Ages all the way into the mid- and even late- Medieval period.)

Here they are on her feet. I took Moira with me to a local Doll Fair to get her a wig and some eyes, and our matching shoes amused several people.

And here she is! I did not expect her to end up with this hairstyle but I tried the wig on her and it was just right. It's a Monique "Alexis", and I think it's a 6-7, snug fit. It needs some product on it to smooth flyaways but I do like it. Her eyes are glass 12mm Greens of an unknown brand, I think the dealer said something like "Anna Tina"? EDIT: They're from Antina Doll Supplies!

      That completes her modification thread!

Further work is in a clothing and craft thread where I'll make her some outfits and armor.

    3. Saving space for more updates.

    4. Annnd one more.

    5. This is an interesting mod. I'll be watching to see how it goes. :)

    6. This looks great. I'll be interested to see the end result. I love the stuff where the dolls go into those ambiguous middle areas out of their store bought defaults.

    7. Wow, this is going to look fantastic, I'm sure of it. I really love the strong woman image you're going for here and I can't wait to see this finished! Looking forward to following this awesomeness. XD

    8. Oooh I'm curious about this :3 It looks really good so far :3

    9. I didn't expect it to happen when I first decided to get a bjd, but I'm completely hooked on modding too now. At the moment none of my dolls are actually together and dressed and able to be played with or displayed, because they're all in some stage of a mod... I have a body overhaul, a facial resculpt, and an elf-ear addition going! I've pretty much come to accept that I will not be happy with any doll I get until I've modded the heck out of it. I really enjoy watching your project journals, especially since I can learn from them--- the more the merrier! :)

    10. I'm impressed! I'm honestly terrified of messing with my doll. X_X I'm even afraid to restring her (though she probably needs it because she doesn't stand easily) because I'm terrified I'll break something, orz.

What you're doing here looks pretty amazing, though. Not only is your doll in pieces, but you're also making really neat changes to make it more to your image! :3

    11. Instant subscribe the minute I saw the title. I've been having my own fascination with muscular women as of late and really fancy trying to give my dragon girl more muscle definition (blaming video game models of female Orcs and Roegadyn from FFXIV and my love of She Hulk as a child). Plus your mod projects are always amazing!

    12. I've always wanted to do this with a Male MNF body! I shall be watching for sure!

    13. Thank you!

Thanks! I like to really customize my own dolls into something a good way from their original look, it seems.

Thank you very much! I am hoping she works out.

      Thanks!

Yeah, I kind of dove headfirst into modding once I had read enough to figure out how to do it. It was easier when I lived in a house, in a warm climate, and could do work outside or in my garage any time of the year. Now I am limited a bit by my workspace setup in my little studio, but it's better than not having any workspace at all. I own very few dolls I have not modified somehow. I think it's part of my bonding with them, making them more Mine somehow. I am flattered to know when people have seen and noticed more than one of my projects! They're not quite tutorials but I try to include info about my process as I go. I do hope it's helpful.

Thanks! Don't be afraid to restring- if you're worried, read up a lot on it first, get some sturdy hemostats and metal crochet hooks, get the right size of elastic, then get someone else to help you do it. Four hands are far better than just two for a job like that. I *can* restring a doll by myself, but for anything 60cm or bigger I find it's so much easier to have my friend help me hold the bits.

Thank you! I have always loved the muscular hero-girl physique and since I am unlikely to be able to attain it myself, I wanted to make a doll with this figure- A warrior girl I can put in armor and send on adventures.

Cool! If you do it too, I'd love to see that! I'm editing in a little more about my process in that first post.

    14. wow! awesome ! I would like to see more of this !!

    15. I can't WAIT to see more!

    16. Totally subscribing to this awesome project, can't wait to see process pics! OuO

    17. I think this is a great project! I'm really interested to see a really toned, strong but feminine girl. Keep up the good work =D

    18. Ooh, what an interesting idea! Can't wait to see further updates and the final product! She's looking great so far ^__^

    19. ohhh this will be interesting!

    20. Thanks, more is on its way!

      Thank you!

Thanks, though I admit a lot of the tough part has been done- reshaping those abs.

Thank you! I am still working on her.

Thanks! I know I'm not the first or only one to think of this; I'm sure some people have tried with other dolls.

      Thank you!

      And I've done an Update!

    21. This is amazing! I bought the new one piece boy torso to attempt something like this for a androgynous look for a Mirwen. I definitely will be coming back here for inspiration. I love how the abs turned out, I can't wait to see her all finished.

    22. Amazing work! I'm looking forward to see her with her head :D

    23. Can't wait to see this finished! Wonderful job so far :)

    24. Thanks! I hope we get to see your work soon!

Thank you! I was giddy all day when I finally got her heads and she started to be a full doll instead of just a project.

      Thank you very much!

      Updated 5/19

    25. Wow, congrats! This girl came out just wonderfully! Love that tomboyish "I could kick your butt" look she has and the breasts, though they don't match her resin, are actually a really great size. Even with the tunic on they still give her just enough "oomph" to show that she is indeed a female. The face and hair match perfectly, too. That wig was a lucky find and it works really well with her look. Amazing job and congrats again on finishing her mods!

    26. Excellent job! She looks wonderful! Everything came together quite nicely.
(a hint on the eyes...I am betting they meant Antina's Doll Supply)

    27. She looks fantastic! :D

    28. She looks fabulous! I can definitely feel that she could exist in any medieval story. The colour of her tunic suits her so well! Thanks for sharing your work with us!

    29. Thanks very much! I based her bust size on how having such a low body fat percentage usually makes a woman's chest a bit smaller. (I kinda envy her, grass is always greener, and all that- I am NOT small-chested at all.) I couldn't believe it at first when I tried the wig on her, it was so different from what I expected to work for her, but it just did. I really lucked out that the dealer even had this shade of brown- I envisioned her with darker or dusty brown, but this auburn brown works so much better.

Thank you! And yes, that must have been what the man was trying to mean, thanks! Those do look like them! She has the oval glass eyes in 12mm, though I don't see the color she is wearing in the 12 size on their ebay store. I really like how these glass eyes aren't a solid color, or just a solid color with some lines drawn in it. They have color variations and amazing depth and clarity I couldn't catch in my crappy lil' camera pics. I need to do a real shoot with Moira and use my nice camera and some good light.

      Thanks!

Thank you! I actually made her tunic before I did most of her faceup, and I can't help thinking the color must have subconsciously influenced me to use all those warm tones in her face.

    30. Wow, she's looking great! Ready to kick butt yet still feminine. Everything works together extremely well. I have to admit I'm a little envious of your bravery in being able to dive into a project-- and having the skill to pull it off! Every time I see one of your mod threads, I have to come and see what you've been up to. It's always inspiring to see a great mod project. :)

    31. Rosslyn, she looks utterly amazing! Seriously, I'm totally in love with her. She has that perfect mixture of strength and beauty. I love the face you've chosen for her and the outfit and the scars. She's just, so perfect. Maybe the flesh on her breasts doesn't quite match, but she still looks really good to me and the modifications just look great. I really like the eyes you've chosen as well, they just give her so much character and really bring her to life. Gonna go back to staring at her now! XD

    32. Aw, thank you! I did my first mods back in 2009,and I've been learning since then, or I would not be so eager to jump into projects like this. Anyone can do it if they research enough and start small, then just do a lot of work and gradually ramp up your projects. I often do things I am not sure I can succeed at! Always a little scary, but if I am careful, make plans, and go slowly, I learn things and manage to make it work out nicely. I am pretty sure I'm now a modification addict.

Thanks very much! I keep staring at her. I was so unsure how this all would turn out, but it went okay. I'd really like to give her some good light armor next. So far I've been making her some good everyday clothes. I try to give each of my dolls one full outfit with accessories.

    33. Aaah! As someone with a similarly-muscular female OC, this thread is GOLD. Pure gold!
Although I want to make my girl in SD size, this is fantastic <3

    34. Thank you very much! This could easily be done with the right male SD body. I'd love to see that!

    35. You are just amazing! I am impressed by how you really considered the anatomy of a muscled girl, rather than just slap boobs on a muscled boy body and call it a girl. She definitely has that feminine form, but with the toned muscles of a well-trained warrior. I love how you got the idea and made it all happen. She's just stunning - and your abilities in other areas just make the project that much more impressive. Can't wait to see more from you! I wish I had your guts, lol.

    36. Thanks so much! :blush I have a bit of background in art anatomy, so that figured into my design choices with this mod. It helped that FL's boys have a slightly feminine hipbone structure to begin with, so their bodies are a bit androgynous already, and the hip section's build can pass for Male or Female type, if you change the details.

    37. I really love how you reshaped the torso. It reads as very female to me, and both the intermediate stage and the final stage with more muscle definition have gorgeous lines. The blushing is lovely, too.

    38. Thank you very much! I was hoping that a change of the basic lines would help the body seem more female than male.

    39. She is awesome - I wish more doll companies would accept that not all girls are wispy/curvy, some are strong & muscular!

    40. Thank you! The dolly world has such an amazingly limited run of options for female body types it's disheartening, so I mod.

    41. She is absolutely wonderful! Very strong and very beautiful! :D
Looks like a lot of work, but for a great result!

    42. Thank you very much!

    43. Oh gosh, she looks amazing. * A * A few years ago I thought about the possiblity of modding the MNF mucsle boy body into a girl (there was a girl I had wanted to make into a doll at the time, but she had a muscular body and all that). Great to see someone actually do it! :D Looks even better than I ever expected! Great job. :aheartbea

    44. Thank you very much! It is quite a doable mod if you take time with it and go carefully on the torso sculpting.

    45. Oh wow, she is stunning! I absolutely love what you've done, I've always been put off girl dolls because the bodies are so small and willowy with such huge chests, and most of my female characters are tough fighters-they need muscle! Your mod is amazing, I love the attention to detail, and she looks feminine and tough and ready to fight! Excellent work :)

    46. Thanks very much! I had a botched SD custom muscle body for another doll, but it was so hard to fix I couldn't bond with it. I sold it, but I wanted at least one warrior girl in my collection, and the FL bodies have such feminine hips anyway that this wasn't too big of a stretch to imagine doing.

    47. thanks for sharing this! thinking about male-to-female modding and it's awesome to see the actual transformation outside of my imagination. love your character btw!

    48. Interesting and well executed! She makes a very convincing muscular woman. Nice job! :thumbup

    49. She's very believable and looks so comfortable with a sword in her hand. Congratulations on a job VERY well done. Will we be seeing photos of her adventures? Thanks for sharing your work with us.

    50. Thanks very much!
I wish I knew more about her, but I'll have to take her on some photoshoots and find out.
Thank you! It was a fun mod to do, and other than the paint problems, surprisingly easy.

      Thank you! Very kind!
She's a doll I made with many adventurous location shoots in mind. When I have free time I'm working on her adventuring kit- harness for her horse, a bedroll and baggage and so on. I'm also making her armor.

    51. oh wow she turned out great!!! love her outfit too, good job!

    52. Great job!~ She is so stunning and looks fantastic! So cool to see this type of mod~ :D

    53. Oh, well done! That is fantastic work! She looks like she could kick butt!

    54. Thank you! If she gets any more stuff I'll try and keep adding pics. I owe her another shoot sometime soon.

Thanks! It's a mod you don't often see done, but I really wanted a girl with those abs and arms and legs...

Thank you! I need to do a shoot of some of her training workouts.

      • x 1
    55. Wow! Incredible work! I'm still afraid to restring my own dolls, LOL! I'm in awe of what you've done. And that sword is amazing with her. :)

    56. This is way cool. Beautiful work on the doll herself (as an anatomy, err, "fan" I appreciate the amount of thought you put into the shape of her abs and the effect her athleticism would have on her build, and the faceup and scars are great) but oh boy, the clothes! The shoes are especially spectacular. You're very talented.

    57. Is it possible to do this but just change the upper piece to a female one so there's no breast modding but still keep the male abs? (Sanding down seems a lot easier than sculpting up...) Or is it an absolute no fit even with sanding/mod to try?

    58. I'm holding off on getting any dolls primarily because of the lack of muscular females on the market. I was told by a friend that modding a male doll would be an option, but I wasn't sure because of the differences of muscle builds and the difficulty of modding. You make it look so easy though, and you addressed the different musculature very well. I'm incredibly impressed and think I might actually start saving up for a male body to mod.

    59. Amazing mod! :D Very nicely done. ^^ She definitely looks tough! :whee: This is really inspirational! :3nodding:

    60. Thank you very much!

Thank you! Every now and then in this hobby I get to use all that Art Education for something, and I do so love anatomy.

Well, the problem there is that no breast part I know of which is meant for Female doll bodies will ever fit, without major modifications, onto the torso part of a Male doll. I planned this mod the way I did because I didn't want the large round breasts usually found on female dolls, or their narrow shoulders, or their attached slim, smooth, toneless arms. I used a male body to get the wide shoulders, muscular arms, and lack of breasts so I could build smaller breasts onto the chest muscles. To simplify this mod, You could just add breasts to a male body and alter the genitals, but the torso would still resemble a male torso to anyone who knows the different musculature that Male vs Female hips create. (not many people, to be honest)

Thanks! They are really very fun to mod. This kind of thing takes practice but I started out a few years back and it's been fascinating to learn a whole new art medium.

      Thank you very much!
