Wearables Yarn Mermaid Dreadlocks

Mar 29, 2019

    1. **pictures to be added later today/when I can figure out how

      Materials:
      • White yarn
      • 1 knee-high stocking
      • White thread
      • Scissors
      • Sewing needle
Last weekend, my friend sold me her Impldoll Dorisy mermaid and I decided to make her a wig myself. This is my first wig and all I had was yarn. Luckily, I was hoping for a thick, dreadlock-look so the yarn is perfect, especially for my first try.

I started out cutting lengths of yarn to a random length I thought would look good. This yarn comes with two strands twisted together, so I untwisted each strand to make 2 pieces out of every 1 piece I cut.

For the wig cap, I purchased a pack of one-size women's stockings from Price Chopper and fit the end over Freya's head. I estimated the size and cut away the excess stocking and then sewed the end shut, making a crude wig cap. (Luckily the stocking hole is just about the perfect size for this specific doll's head. Smaller dolls may need the stocking to be tightened somehow, perhaps by taking in some of the size or adding a piece of elastic around the circumference.)

To attach the yarn, I folded each strand in half and sewed them onto the wig cap at the fold so they would stay. I began on one side underneath her ear and am continuing around the head

    2. Id like to see pictures . I ve been making caps myself for a couple of dolls this way too. With the saran wrap, stockings and mod podge. I also plan to use yarn because I have some free yarn and these are practice wigs.Im not ready to waste money on the hair and then mess it up. Id liked to try both ways myself full peices of yarn and wifts before moving to doll hair . right now im just making the caps . So I have a couple already made and ready to practice attaching the hair to.

    3. I'm definitely going to add pictures later! I'm at work right now so I don't have access to them, but I did just figure out flikr so I can insert them when I get home :celebrate
So far, it's looking really awesome, imho. The full yarn pieces resemble the dreadlocks I was going for and the hair is going to be really thick, fitting for a mermaid.
I did try brushing the yarn out a bit and I just kind of pulled it all apart so that didn't work...could have been the type of yarn, though.
