Since I'm learning to do face-ups I rather do them myself, but that's not to say I wouldn't commission someone if I like their style and can see them doing the perfect face-up for that doll.
I actually prefer to commission a face up if I know I will be 100% satisfied but since that's not the case (due to some experiences in the past) I rather do them myself even though it's hard for me and they don't always come out how I want them....but that's how you learn, I just have to keep practicing
There's a lot of amazing artists who can do truly beautiful faceups but my pleasure is to do it myself so I never commisioned anybody for my dolls... Most of the time, I'm quite happy with the results and if I'm not, I know that I can re-do it if I want and improve my skills ^^ Also, I only order a faceup from the company if I really like the faceup in question and if I'm sure that the result will be similar to the company pictures...
I prefer to do them myself. I'm not very good, but I paid a lot for my dolls, and it makes me anxious to send it away to someone else! Perhaps if I had someone local I would buy a face-up, but it makes me nervous enough getting my dolls to me in the post the first time.
If I had some face up talent then I would do it myself but unfortunately I am not good at this type of thing! I have yet to send a doll for a face up and I am very nervous about doing that too!
Like everything else, I would LOVE to do face-ups on my own. I tried once, and it was HORRIBLE. HAHAHAH! I haven't tried since, only because I don't think I'd be any good at it. Sooooooo, I resort to commissioning. And I think I found the person I'm going to go to FOREVER. Lol.
I did my own faceup, but I would't mind sending my doll head to an artist if the price was affordable and if their faceup work was really good. But seeing that this probably isn't going to happen, I'm content with practicing my eyelash and eyebrow hair paint strokes. I'm an art student anyway, so doing my own faceups will probably help me with my sensitive drawing skills.
Haha with my painting skills, I would totally commission a faceup...obviously I'd be nervous in case they didn't do what I wanted, but I usually look at the artists work then decide.
I'd love to do my own faceups but I've never done one before and art supplies can get pretty pricey, so I'd probably end up commissioning someone if the price and style were right. I might get lucky and find that local dollmaker my friend was talking about!
It's either I buy a doll with face up. Or I do it myself. I feel bad about giving them to some one and not seeing them.
I would rather do it myself, but I'm not very good at it yet. So I've been going with factory face-ups, because I'm a little twitchy about sending my dolls' heads away for a commission. Still practicing! Maybe I'll get brave and order my next baby without a face and give it a whirl. Watch all my heart palpitations lawl.. xD;
I love to commission artist, and I think it was great that people give the artists a chance to (possibly) create a miracle. But I also started doing face-up by myself, I just feel it was an interesting thing to practice.
I love painting them myself (I have painted many miniatures and models in the past). It can get a little hard at times ~ Especially when you want your doll's face to be perfect xP I absolutely adore doing face ups, though, and am hoping that I could possibly take commissions in the future!
If I'm not doing it by my self, I like to have it from the company, specially Iplehouse they have really amazing artists and offering custom face up as well
I make them myself. Maybe they don't look pro, but I enjoy it and this way I'm sure that it looks like I want it. If I don't like the end result, is not hard to remove it because I haven't paid for it XD
I'd love to do face-ups myself but I'd be worried that my hand would shake and then I'd start over before ending up with a messy face up Seeing as I only have the one doll I've considered getting a practice head to work on. Whilst commissioning would be great and there are some really beautiful face ups out there, I'm haven't yet come across a style that says "Thats what I want!"
Nauticaa, there is one really good tip I learned (this was not the only good tip I learned, just the one I think might make you more willing to try yourself) at a Volks Dolpa faceup class, and that is to use the headcap to practice on. Just MSC it, and you can paint and wipe to your hearts desire. It will be the same resin as your dolls head but not as intimidating.
With so much talent available it is relatively easy to find someone with the style of face up your looking for. I prefer to let the artist run riot. If you love their work you won't be disappointed! ??
I like to create, this is the reason I've chosen the bjd-hobby. So everything for my dolls I do by myself. Maybe I am a future famous make-up artist, who knows!
I rather usually do it myself cause i had be drawing since 03' and i not afraid of making an angle good but i do like practicing when it comes to inspiration and this is new to me i have one that came with face -up my bobobie and the second one IP Zera i wanted in blank and it help me learn how to do face-up ( i have my sister doubted me that i can't do any sculpted paint see me not know how to do any art sculptor) just because a brainer and know art not gonna lie grad art college but what the diff a person newbie and a know it all don't matter u never know the person had better ideas then making them u know as they say just my imagination i tell ya
I love create too and if I was talented I 'd love to do make up myself but this is not the case so..... commission for me too
I feel fairly confident as an artist that I can work on the faceups for my dolls, but as with all things, there is a learning curve when working with a new medium. I only have 2 dolls and see no reason to change their faceups regularly, so with cost of materials and time factored in, it is more practical for me to find an amazing faceup artist on DoA and choose commissioning over doing it myself.
i would buy a doll with a company faceup because i don't want to mess up my doll , till i learn cause i have no idea how to put on makeup
I think both. It is fun to be able to personalise our dolls to just how we want them - but that itself is where the problem lies for me. I am unable to recreate what is in my head to my satisfaction, so if I want a specific look for a character I would send the doll away to an artist. I have been really pleased with my last two face-ups - one of which i did today. I had no exact requirements and just went with the flow. I just keep on with it until i was happy with the end result. Completing a successful face-up gives me a real sense of achievement - my own work of Art!
I'm really not fit to do a faceup I once wanted to repaint my doll n it came very weird I can't get the eyebrows right and I'm not good in drawing I also don't want to practice lol So I think getting my dolls professional faceup by artists is better There are many artists out there with different styles just choose the one that matches ur dolls oc and let her/him do the magic for u
I would rather do it myself. My first doll came with a face-up only because I didn't want her to be blank. Now almost 2yrs later I want to change it. Doing it myself would help me bond better with her. I'd be to afraid to send her to some unknown place and let her be in the hands of a person I don't really know. And then she might get lost in the mail. To many chances I'm not willing to take. I readily admit I suck at drawing but I'm pretty damn good at doing my own make-up and doing a face-up to me is the same as doing my make-up just with different tools. I look at commissions pages and take ideas from them and see all the little tricks they put into it. But I'd rather do it myself. So as soon as my materials get here I'm gonna be changing Alessas face-up.
I've commissioned three of my heads to be repainted despite having all the materials at hand. Just been too nervous to give it a go. Have been inspired to try and give it a whirl on my floating head thanks to this thread though. :3
I own a blank head, and, personally, I would rather commission a face-up than to do it myself. This is because I'm just starting out in the hobby, and I don't really have much experience (translation: no experience whatsoever haha) with doing face-ups, nor do I have the tools to actually do them myself. So, yeah, for now, I'd rather commission a face-up than do it myself. Of course, that can (probably) change, when I actually do try and do face-ups myself, though, I think that's quite unlikely, as I'm not really good with art in general. \shot
I'm a little nervous about doing it myself, so I'm probably going to commission it. I was all gun-ho about doing my first face-up by myself, and then I thought of all the ways I could ruin the face and got scared lol
I really don't trust myself enough to do a face-up yet...so for now all I'm seeing for my dolls are commissioned or company face-ups.
Since I'm an artist and a big reason for me to get into the BJD hobby was the fact that I can paint/customize them myself I'd always prefer doing the faceups myself! However if I weren't into art, or had any talent with a brush or so, I'd commission a face up artist whose general work I like, so that I could basically say that if they just did what they usually do in their faceups, I'd already be happy - that way there'd be not that much of a chance to be disappointed, you know, that "No matter what it is, I love everything they do" kinda feel!
The face up part was what really drew me to the hobby at first, and what I really wanted to learn to do, so I happily attempt to do my own. For my first resin doll, Sammy, as he was a birthday gift and I'd yet to try doing a face up on resin, I got the company to do it, since I wanted him to look really nice. I'm getting my first blank resin doll soon though, so I'm nervous, but excited to see how she'll turn out when I do her face up myself! My first MSD girl and my other Yo-SD girl both on layaway have company face ups though, since I really liked theirs. I guess it just depends, but I really want to have a lot of practice on my smaller, less expensive dolls before I do work on the ones I've spent a ton of money on. Either way, it's more personable and gives me bonding time with them if I do it myself. ^^
I'm going to try it myself on a practice head and then decide! I'd like to commission, but I'm really picky. I've done MH face-ups and been pretty happy, so I just need to gather the right sealants, some clean brushes and give it a whirl
I prefer to do mine myself. My dolls feel more 'mine' after I've given them a face. However, if I had a chance to get work on my dolls done by a favorite artist, I would.
For right now I rather have someone else do my faceups for me but one day I hope to do my own. I just don't want to be unhappy with a doll because of my own lack of ability.
I'd rather do it myself, but I'd need a practice head so I don't ruin anyone's face xD So far, I'm just reserving my first doll for doing my own faceups. My second one is going out for hers as soon as I get my paycheck, but Aela's gotta be done by me just because she's my first one :3
As an artist myself, I'd like to think that I can do it on my own. I need to gather supplies though and that's where I'm falling apart and feeling nervous.
If I had something in mind that I knew I wouldn't be able to do myself then yes I would get someone else to do it, otherwise I am fairly determined to do mine myself
Definitely do it myself! I'm an artist so I would have a hard time letting someone else actualize my intended vision. That being said, their are some amazing face up artists, that I might consider commissioning in the future.
I would love to commission faceups. But after waiting for a few months to get my doll I hate to send her right out the door. So I usually do them myself.
I want to do my faceups myself BUT there are a couple artists I would hire. Just because I love their work so much!!
Do it myself. I´m illustrator. So I saw a few tutorials and videos to learn about it. I´m still learning. But i'm very interested in make this things by myself. Get the materials has been the hardest.
Currently, I am not comfortable doing face-ups on my lovely girls, but I would love to practice on some less expensive heads for fun and who knows, I actually may be good at it. If I ever end up being anywhere to awesome I would do my own, but until then I will continue to send my heads off for face-ups.
Since I'm terrible at face up, so I send it to my friends to do it I tell them what i want they look like so they can face up and I still love it..
I'd definitely rather do it myself. I would be too nervous to ship my doll's head somewhere else and leave it in their care, even if they were very professional. I'd rather it was me who accidentally broke my doll (if it had to happen) than someone else. I'd also worry they'd get lost in the mail. Plus its fun to do face ups, because they can drastically change the entire look of the doll and form their personality. Its a good bonding exercise for me.
I am going to the STL BJD Covention this Friday coming. I am an artist with a " Michael's " store as their art Instructor but want to do Face ups. The Convention has a panel that will show me how. So.... there is my answer. I would rather (and hopefully will ) do it myself .
I'm going to do them myself! I've done all the research, have an artistic background and a very clear vision, so why risk losing my doll in the mail if I can paint her myself? And, if I don't like my first few attempts, mess it up, or scratch it, it's removable and I'll have everything I need to fix it!
When i first decided my boy needed a faceup, I went out, collected the necessary materials, had at it, and was pleased with the results. Im an artistic type so why not is my reasoning. I have enough mediums, so why not pastels and MSC. A time later, I wanted a boy with burn scars, again I did it myself and was actually blown away with the results. HOWEVER, i recently started getting IPLEHOUSE dolls and wanted someone with more experience to get the lifelike look the manufacture faceup captures and had a commission. My style is much less accurate in that arena. But i know i will enjoy the results.
I like to do the faceup myself. The character of the doll evolves as I plan and work on her faceup, so it's an ever-changing process for me. I love seeing the end result of my faceup, because it usually ends up different from what I originally had in mind and builds the doll's personality in my mind. Also, creating the faceup is a fun part of the hobby! It's super relaxing and calming for me. However, if I ever buy a super limited edition bjd, I would definitely have it commissioned.
I'm very happy to say that right now I would rather do the face ups myself. no more stress over sending heads out and wondering if the artist will get the commission right or even send the head back. It took me awhile to gather all the tools and willingness to do them myself because I was afraid to mess up. I'm still learning and thankfully, I enjoy it! every time I do a face up I find a new method to do them and I learn more and more.
Commission for sure at the moment. I have no experience with face ups and haven't had any practice, so I know it won't turn out well. Maybe I will try to experiment with them some time, but not at the moment. Right now I am happy with the Junky Spot face up he is sporting. And when I do, I will probably get a practice head first.
I would like to think that i could do it myself, i repaint other dolls and do have some extent of faceup knowledge. Besides i don't have the money for a commission either...
I can never be happy with my attempts at crafting, I think it's because I'm a perfectionist and seeing the process makes me get caught up on all the little tiny imperfections. Therefore I KNOW I can't ever attempt a face-up it would just upset me to dislike a dolly because of something I messed up on.
