This is my first attempt at sculpting a doll. She was modeled after my character on Warcraft, a female Tauren hunter. Not counting her horns or nose, she's about SD sized. I used a brand of air dry clay called DAS which unfortunately started to crack and warp as it dried. I plan to make it more presentable with painting and sanding, but I'm pretty much just going to chalk this up as a prototype since I don't think it's sturdy enough to go on a body.
Using a mirror to check your work will help with symetry. From what I've read on the forums, DAS is not recommended to make dolls with. And I would also add Liquitex Gel Medium Modeling Paste to the list of 'Not To Use'. I was experimenting with it, and it cracks pretty badly. I can recommend Ave's apoxie. I've used it for many things and it's very sturdy. A lot of doll makers use something called La Doll, as well.
Hee, awesome. I play a femtauren too, and there aren't any figures of them out there yet... It seems to me her ears have melded with her horns (where are they?) and so they're too thick on the side of her head. Her nostrils maybe should be a bit more delicate and flat over the top to form a muzzle, rather than thick and flared And the top of the head is a bit flat. But the main issue is with the horns/lack of ears, hehe. Good work, and good luck!
AHHH, every day I see more and more interesting types of dolls being made here... Especially based on WoW ^_^ (and a tauren is the last one I'd expect to see..which makes it all the more awesome!) the heads looking great so far, I look forward to seeing the rest of her!
Your clay could have also cracked because most air-dry clays shrink while drying, and since you sculpted around an aluminum foil core, the clay couldn't hold the tension and cracked. Styrofoam cores are better in such situations because the clay can compress them as it dries. But the sculpt is certainly very interesting. ^^
im so glad to see some tauren love no one likes the tauren ladies! im a female tauren druid (from way way way back in the day) and ive always wanted someone to make a bjd tauren! great job persuing it!
I agree about the nostrils being more delicate. The flared nostrils may be good for an angry tauren heehee. Now I want to make a troll ~.~ Someone else made a gnome and it was really cute XD;;
Sweet!! It's about time somebody did a Warcraft themed doll. Now maybe my little brother won't write this hobby off as completely "creepy." XD It looks pretty sweet thus far; my only critique is that her brow and snout look a little less elongated than they do in the picture. Still, I can't really talk--my doll's head is nothing like a humans. :
Angry tauren, a force to be reckoned with! I'd like to see a troll too. There's an undead mod somewhere on these forums, and the gnome you're talking about impressed me a whole lot. O_O Hey Ciniron, have you had any time to continue your project? I'd like to see updates whenever you'd like to get around to it! ^_^
oooo how amazing - great idea. Alliance here (night elf hunter *of course*) , but I reckon a f troll would be cool too. Post more pics!!!!
Excellent job on your Tauren! I'd love to see more pics! The world needs more Warcraft-themed BJD's. I don't even have my first doll yet, but I'm already planning ideas to mod a future female doll into a Blood Elf.
