Working on a doll room - Pics of progress *Big Pictures*

Jul 13, 2009

    1. Hey all.

My dolls live on a tall 'Gorilla Rack' shelf. It's pretty boring looking so I've been thinking of ways to spruce it up. I started by adding a back wall out of spare rack shelves and that's how they lived for a long time but I was recently inspired to add some wallpaper and a chair rail.

This is the pattern from the Haunted Mansion in Disney Land.

      Oooh, spooky.

The girls in their room. Sorry for the crappy pic. It was dark out and I had to use the flash. Blech. And the mirrors are so uneven. Gotta fix that.

I don't know what to do about the floor. It's got a little "rug" on it right now and I guess I could just paint it but a real floor would be nicer.

      Comments and suggestions welcome.

    2. At Michale's (craft store) they carry tiny glass tiles. I am using them for a doll house bathroom floor. They are beautiful and then the rug could go over it. I love your room so far.

    3. Painting the floor would be good, I think if you painted it then put a nice little rug on it it would look very nice ^-^

    4. That is a pretty neat idea; a storage, staging/display, and a photoshoot area.
As far as the floor; you can get self-adhesive "wood" floor sheets from a miniature (dollhouse) store and stick it to the bottom shelf or even use woodgrain contact paper or gift wrap. Then you can put area rugs down as well.

Or get checkerboard paper and glue that down.

    5. Oooh I like the ideas of tile and of checkerboard. I'll have to look into those options.
      Thanks!

    6. You can also get "wood" contact paper for a lot less than the doll house stuff. The grain would be a little out of scale.

Enough parquet tiles to cover the "floor" would not set you back too much. Parquet tiles come in a lot of styles and colors. I like the idea of wood under your "area rug".

You could also cover the floor with velveteen and call it wall-to-wall carpet. It would be in scale and you could use the area rug on top of it.

The glass tiles mentioned above sound good but regular 4" tiles would be in scale for dollies and you can get partial boxes dirt cheap. With the craze for larger tiles in houses the 4" tiles would correspond to 15" human tiles. I know, the tiles in houses are 12", 16", 18", 20" and 24" but it really isn't that far off.

If you can find a small print in oil cloth it would double for old style linoleum. That might go with your antique style mirrors.

    7. I like that idea too! The more I think about the room the more I want more shelves and more rooms, of course. They are a bit cramped in there and there are 2 more girls who just don't fit the theme of this room (space girls).

    8. The idea is very good. My only issues are with the chair rail height, and the line going through the middle. It's very, very distracting, especially being at that height. Maybe use plain paper over the top part next time?

Also, I think that the chair rail is a little bit low. When your doll is standing, it should reach about to her hip.

Other than those two nitpicky things, you're doing great and have a wonderful idea there.

    9. The line totally bugs me too. It's where the two pieces of "wall" meet up. I might paper over the whole grey part at some point which will take care of it.

On the rail- agree there too. It's just the height of the paper. I should have printed the paper landscape and doubled it up.
      Live and learn!

    10. How about making the wall into a three parter: make a large stripe (new chair rail decoration) the width of from-where-it-is-now to a better chair rail height. Maybe make it black and make the top third a blue to match the paper (and to cover up the joint).

      Hope that made sense.

    11. Hmm, that might be interesting. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to ponder it. Getting the printer paper down without it being a mess of bubbles was really tricky but I could see fabric working in this case.

    12. There are a lot of great ideas in this thread. I agree with the suggestions, and think the chair rail was a great idea.

    13. Very cool! I cant wait to start my doll room :)
