Wonky bits :)

Feb 19, 2006

    1. Well I finally decided to play with some resin and casting...I was scared to death after sculpting on a hand all week that I'd mess up my sculpt..but I didn't..lol..I did however learn a couple of things...One: what looks good in sculpy...looks way different in resin...sculpy doesn't show your flaws as bad as resin (eek!) Two: don't get to excited and pull your cast :( (I have a hand that looks like a little old mans, wrinkles and all cause I couldn't wait..hehehe I want to Thank Donn for his mold making how to on his site...it was so much help...Thanks Donn :) ....And now for my wonky little hand..for the most part I guess it's OK...it's the pull from my junk mold so I have some sanding left to do...sorry it's not the best picture...but the only nonfuzzy one I could get...you'll have to excuse the elongated bird finger...I like the look of extra long and lean parts, so it was hard for me to keep it at bay..lol..so any input on improvments is more than welcome...and would help before I make a master mold...:)

      Thanks a bunch...Jeannie

    2. gorgeous! yeah - the sanding down before making the mold thing is killer - but from here, that hand looks wonderful.

how are you going to do the joints?

    3. Hi Patl...I should be ready to update with the wrist joint and lower arm pics real soon (woohoo) I think I'll do a sculpy to resin or a before and after casting pic...for the joint I'm doing just a simple semi-hallow ball with an eyelet screw...nothin fancy..lol..I'm glad you like it so far..(blushes) Thanks bunches...Jeannie

    4. do you think there was extra pull on the pour from having the fingers so beautifully seperate? Might explain (besides the strength thing) why so many of the commercial hands are less divided - cut down on pouring costs if you don't have to be as careful with taking the pieces out of the molds?

how big is your hand? I've been mostly playing with jointing tinies, and the eyelet screw thing is too big - I was kind of wondering how it would work if i poured solid balls, drilled a horizontal hole from side to side thru the ball, then used a round grinding sphere to hollow out the top/center of the sphere, finally sliding a metal bar thru the horizontal hole.....

sometimes i really wish there was a way to type pictures!

anyway - can't wait to see more. beautiful.

    5. Wow. Thats gorgeous! I can't wait to see the rest of your body ^_^

    6. That looks awesome! Im so glad to see your back to working on your doll :)

hands are one of the most difficult parts to mold so if you can mold and cast a hand that nicely all the other parts should be fairly easy.

Jeannie your sculpts are really beautiful, i can't wait to see more!

take care, :cake: (i couldnt resist using one of the new "smilies")
      Donn

    7. Patl your joint sounds cool...as for extra pull I'm not really sure cause this is the first casting I've done...it's sd sized or the eyelet screws wouldn't work for me either...:)

Kitto-chi Thanks :)...I'm workin on it..!

Donn...:) :)...Long time no see (well so to speak) LOL...I have to tell ya what I did while I was casting...I was lookin on your site makin sure I had everything in tip top shape as far as my mold was concerned...and was in such a hurry to try it out I used the wrong stuff...lol..so I have an amber hand too..lol..thats what happens when you get too tickled...not to mention the wrinkly hand cause I pulled it too soon...but I'm havin lots of fun, I'm glad my hands even turned out...I really had the urge to make the pieces more elongated :( so it took quite a while to get it to where it is, it's nice to be back..and doin doll stuff again..big huggggs for you bein so nice ;) Jeannie

    8. 0.0 It looks like an AWESOME hands to me.

    9. Thanks Travesty..I'm real happy with the hands :)

:atremblin For an update...I was somewhat happy with my head...and decided I would make a mold of him without hardening the clay...big mistake:...( I ruined my head...:...( :...( :atremblin I'm so depressed now..all that work down the drain...I did make a cast of him..but my junk mold didn't turn out well either...He has three tiny air bubbles on his face and one on the top of both ears..and he needs lots of work...I'll sand him up tonight and post pics...I don't know if I should try to fix him up and recast him..start over completely..or throw in the towel...I guess I'll just have to see...Jeannie

    10. Hang in there Jeannie!!! im sure he can be salvaged,..you should see how crappy some of my resin pulls out of my junk molds are, it might just take a bit of extra work but even if your only cast is not perfect and has bubbles you can still filll them and patch any mistakes with bondo,

and then sand the bloody hell out of it!!

,...im convinced that 90% of getting a nicely finished prototype for molding is sanding,.. 10% is actual sculpting :sweat

anyway,.. no matter what keep trying!!, we all have molding/casing problems

(for all those that dont know, moldmaking is a pain in the A$$) :vein

PM me if you need any help :daisy

    11. Hi Donn:abambi: ..I stayed up most of the night sandin him:ablah: ..He kinda looks like some kind of anime character now...lol...I'll have to work on his eyes, rebuild his nose, and fill the bubbles in... and sand sand sand...:ablink: but eventually he'll shape up..he looks rather angry...do you suppose he's pi**ed at me for messin him up?..lol..I think the next head mold I do will be a three part mold...just so my bumblin self won't mess him up so bad:vein...I :aheartbea him even though he is a wreck..Jeannie:daisy

    12. I'm happy to see your work again, Jeannie! Your sculpting is so refined! When I first looked at the pic, I was like "Why's she casting from other companies' ha-- Oooooooh." I can't wait to see more of your doll! How big will he be?

    13. Gah, my hand fetish just practically exploded! I really like it. It's sooo nice.

    14. OOOO... that hand looks nice! :D Poor head~ I did something similar. XD look at the demonllama head in bastian's thread... he's pink and he's perturbed!

As for fixing it, you can also add to the voids created by the bubbles with liquitex modeling paste. It gets really really hard when it hardens. However, if you get it wet after it hardens it will start to break down. But I find it's great for fixing small imperfections on sculpts. :3

    15. Hi Armeleia...:)...once I sculpted Kain it kinda became a compulsion to sculpt and cast a complete doll...I have an old pointy fingered boy hand that I bought from someone from the boards that their cat chewed on..lol..I used it for scale (SD sized) for my hands and they turned out longer and more stylized..I used a dreamming El head to go by for my head..although he looks more like an anime cartoon reject after I bothched him...I probably could have bought a doll and a half with what I've invested in supplies so far:whee: It may take me a forever to get him done but it's for the fun of doin it :daisy

Thank you Tatsukitty...I'm glad you like it:blush

    16. Thanks Batchix I've seen Bastian:love (How did I miss the pic of demonllama?) I saw in the thread where everyone was talking about him and kept thinking I wanna see...I sanded away most of my heads nasties..lol..but now he looks wierd..lol..about 50% of his nose is gone...and he's lookin pretty girly since I sanded so much of face away...other than that he's kinda growin on me..lol..Thanks for the info..Jeannie

    17. that looks nice!
