Hi everyone! I've been working on my first BJD head currently. As old school artist, I'm using only my hands - sketching first, then sculpting in CPC, lots of sanding over and over. To my surprise, the inside and cap positioning of the head seems to me harder to elaborate than the face. I would like to try casting her by myself, as CPC is quite soft and having a sturdy resin master for eventual sending to casting company seems like a good idea. I hope it's OK to post more than one pic in this forum. WIP by Sillion, on Flickr WIP by Sillion, on Flickr WIP by Sillion, on Flickr
Yesterday I wanted to make hints of eyebrows which would help me place the ears correctly. Once a had the pencil in my hand I added also hints of lips etc. so as to see how the head would work with face-up. WIP by Sillion, on Flickr
@Cloudedmind What is DAS? I enjoy working with CPC although some sculptors don't like it as it is fibrous. The fibrous structure is a bit bothering but it is balanced with other rather satisfactory characteristic, it can be layered smoothly and adheres perfectly, among others.
@Sillion It's a brand of paper clay. I like it for bulk modeling, but doesn't do great with fine detail and tends to crack a lot when drying. https://www.amazon.com/DAS-Hardenin...qid=1544469272&sr=8-1&keywords=das+paper+clay
I haven't been updating for a long time. But since my last post I have moved forward. And I experienced some complications during my first casting, unfortunately. I cast the head in resin and due to the material contamination with moisture which wasn't my fault at all, the resin started to foam soon after poured into the molds. But the suppier was very kind and helpful, tested the material himself and sent me another pack of resin eventually. Also the mold isn't quite perfect as I faced some unexpected obstacles while making it, but it would work very well if there wasn't the problem with the material. Nevertheless, several very supportive collectors from our bjd community have persuaded me to change my mind about the cast and give this first girl (whose name is Xenia) regardless her many defects a face-up. And I'm really glad I've done it. I had to make her freckled to camouflage her numerous pinholes (fortunately, there are less of them on the face area, while at the back and inside of the head it's more holes than the mass). Eventually, I was happy with the result of my very first BJD head attempt including home-casting. Some pics with the face-up: 12_1 by Sillion, on Flickr
With a different wig and eyes. She is photographed on Iplehouse SID and HID bodies, respectively. She fits perfectly on them and her poseability and holding the pose is even better than the original Iple heads. 15_1 by Sillion, on Flickr
Wonderful work! She has a lovely, realistic face. Nice idea with the freckles to hide the holes. I hope you'll be able to continue the project.
@StellaMarigold Thank you for encouraging me! I hope I will cast the head more successfully soon. But I have to admit, the process is tricky, and as I don't have the right equipment (too expensive), it's more an experiment.
