WIP -- Making an SD Girl Head -- lots o' pictures

Sep 4, 2008

    1. I'm making this head with DAS, but I won't be using it for the next one. I have some LaDoll and Premiere on order. The DAS has some good qualities but I hate that fuzzy surface it has after sanding.

Anyway, here is how it is going so far:

Started with a sketch on graph paper~~

This is my styrofoam core. The first one I made was too big so this is the 2nd one~~
      [IMG]

Covered the core with a thin layer of clay~~

Cut off the top of the head with a little saw~~
      [IMG]

Do you hear what I hear? Gave her some ears~~

This is the 3rd version of her nose -- this one is staying put~~

    2. Here are some pictures with eyes and wig. They really help improve her looks.;)

I'll post more pics after I put the modelling paste/gesso coat on her. I'm following the method described in the Yoshida book --
I love that book and appreciate the translating from DOA members so much!!

    3. O.O

      *eyes fall out*

Wow. I mean, just... WOW. This is a beautiful, BEAUTIFUL sculpt. Absolutely professional quality... and you make it look so easy, lol. XD I'll be watching to see how this progresses!

    4. Thanks Muse!! You're so kind! I wish it was easy -- Symmetry is such a pain in the keyster. It is amazing how much tinkering I did -- I'm guessing that everyone is the same. First the nose was too big, then too small. Add tiny bits of clay in one place, take it off somewhere else -- again and again and again. The eyes looked good when they were empty then I installed the glass eyes and they looked wonky so I had another go at them. And it was more than a little scarey taking the saw to her head and cutting off her little cranium. I felt like a regular Dr. Frankenstein.

    5. >.< I know what you mean. I'm attempting my first sculpt at the moment, and the eyes are KILLING me! I can deal with a little asymmetry in the nose and lips, but the eyes--those have to be right.

I'm hoping that I don't crush my doll's skull when I finally have to scoop out her innards *snerk* but I only have an x-acto knife, sooo... we'll see. ^.^ How did you fiddle with the head after the clay had set, by the by? (I'm assuming after, since you installed the eyes first).

Edit: Oh, and P.S., I'm kind of stealing the profile sketch of your doll for reference. :sweat Just for proportion comparison mind you, I'm not going to try to copy her face--that'd just be mean, considering all the hard work you put into her.

    6. You are so awesome. That is just amazing. I am so pea-green with envy right now.

I think you need to get on a plane tomorrow and fly to Kyoto and demand a job with Volks.

    7. Now this is just a gorgeous head !! i love everything about her ! so full of expression, so lovely ! keep up the good work !

    8. I forgot something, you have ordered la doll and premier, I would suggest you mix them together, you will see you end up with a clay that is sooooooo smooth and easy to sculpt with, I love the combo of the two. You could of course buy premix, which is the mixture of la doll and premier.

    9. Wow. I love her! She's absolutely beautiful.
I think...the last picture of her without the wig but with the eyes shows so much expression on her face.
      Wow. Fantastic job.

    10. Wow!! :o
I can't believe someone is able to do things like this!! This is totally stunning!!! You're great!
She's beautiful and totally professional!!! Amazing job!!! :aheartbea

    11. You're amazing! :D She's so pretty!

    12. WOW, she is just the most adorable girl. I just love everything about her. You are amazingly talented. I don't think I could draw her nevermind sculp her. I have been taking art classes my whole life. Sometimes you are just naturally talented. And you are!

    13. Thanks everyone for all the nice comments!!! I am so inspired!!!

Muse: I was able to continue to fiddle with the clay after it dried because Das is pretty soft. Also, it gets dry-ish pretty fast but takes a long time to fully dry. So, I filed it with wood rasps and cut out whole sections that I didn't like with an Xacto knife. The new clay additions feather in successfully. I hope the new LaDoll will have those good qualities without the gooeyness and fuzziness and cracking of the Das. Also, you're welcome to lift anything you can use from my drawing. That would be cool if it helps you out. I ended up changing the nose profile. I gave it more curve for a more cute effect. That straight nose looked more mature than I wanted once it was sculpted.

dkotobuki: I LOVE the idea of going to Japan and demanding a job with Volks. That really made me smile and I have to admit I'd do it in a minute if I thought I could!!

fairydancer: Thank you! and thank for the tip on mixing the clays. I'd heard of Premix but thought it was another product all together. I will definitely mix the 2. Wish it would hurry up and get here...

sinister_senna: Thank you so much! I was so happy when I popped some eyes in her. She sort of turned into a person for me.

Higashi: Thank you! I had the hugest smile on my face when I read your kind post.

Wolfie Pie: Thank you very much. I love working on dolls so much and I'm so encouraged.

Tsukidoll: Thank you -- You're so so kind.

    14. She is so beautiful. I wish I could do that so easily (or at least as easy as your photos make it seem!). She is truly inspiring.

    16. She's got such a lonely beauty to her; wonderful work!

    18. Really nice. Alot of work, but worth it.

    19. She looks so good, I'm really looking forward to more progress pictures. Are you going to make a body for her in the future? Judging from this head I can only think you'll make a perfect body for her. Good luck!!

    20. That's amazing. (How did you get it so smooth? Aah!)
