Aesthetics WIP First Faceup

Jul 6, 2016

    1. Okay, so I just got my first dolls last week. I was super excited to see that soft pastels are a recommended faceup medium because I bought a whole set a couple of years ago and rarely use them. I ordered two dolls from Miro Doll during their May sale, an Orlando and a Lili, and they threw in a Wind head for free. I'm practicing on my Wind head before I start on my full set dolls.

      Well, here is the blushing.

I included the Orlando to show the difference between a blank head in normal skin and the blushed head.

I think she looks pretty good. The picture quality is not that great. When I get the line work done, I'll post a better photo.

Let me know if there's anything I can do better. I was wondering if I should shade the crease of the eye with some brown or grey or something? Thanks!

    2. If you're going for an albino type look, (or red eyed, like they were crying) then I would keep the crease pink. If you're creating a more normal face, i would add some brown shading into the crease. :)

    3. It looks very nice and natural! Will she have eyebrows? (I ask because a lot of my characters either don't or won't, ha.)

Outlining the creases is largely a stylistic choice. For a softer bit of definition you could try applying dark pastel to those areas with a really small brush and building it up on its own layer. If you have a kneaded rubber eraser it's possible to use that to shape areas of shading for an interesting look or to erase it from other areas it inadvertently builds up (I find it especially useful for keeping the water lines of the eyes and the fingernails clean until I'm ready to add color.)

It's really looking very nice, I'm interested in seeing more :)

    4. Looks like a nice smooth shading job! If you want a cooler color in the eyelid crease, try gray, or a grayish-violet if you have one. A combo of yellow-tan and gray-violet makes a nice natural shading color. :)

    5. Thanks for the advice everyone. I did some line work, and got the eyebrows and eyelashes done. It's even harder than it looks! I had to go buy a smaller paintbrush. I was using a 00 and it was definitely not small enough for me. I wish I could try the gray violet shading, but it is so humid here right now that I'm afraid to spray sealant. I'm waiting for the humidity to break hopefully over the weekend, and then I can get back to my face ups.
