Crochet Winter Hat With Pom Pom

Feb 26, 2020

    1. I decided to share a pattern for a cute winter hat with a pom pom. This hat is easily adjusted for any size BJD. My doll has a 7.5 inch head circumference. Here are some examples of the hat:

Supplies: I used medium bulk yarn, a size 3 and a 5mm hook. I have also done this with a size 2 fine yarn and a 2.75mm hook, and the method is the same, but any stitch and row amounts will be different. do what you prefer style-wise. A stitch marker (I use a bobby pin and it works just fine).
Band: make a short chain, the same height you want your hat's band to be. Mine is 5 chains. Chain one extra, turn. Slip stitch in second stitch, repeat until end of row. Chain 1, turn. Slip stitch into back of each stitch. Repeat until the end of the row. This will be repeated for the entire length of the band. Make sure to slip stitch in the just the back loop in each stitch. The length of the band should be the circumference of the head, or just a little smaller (it's fairly stretchy). My boy has a 7.5 in head, the hat has a 7in circumference.
When the band is long enough, fold in half, and slip stitch the two open ends together. you now have a round band and will crochet the body of the hat straight from the band (no need to cut the yarn and sew the band to the hat).

When you go to build the body of the hat, you will notice that the band has little bumps and then a dip, you will be crocheting into the dips in your first round

Hat Body (add as many rounds as you want, just start your decreasing round when you are at a length you like on your doll):
Round 1: Chain 1. Single crochet into first dip and stick your stitch marker in this stitch to remember where to start. Single crochet into each dip until the end of the round.
Round 2: you will see a slanted stitch from the chain you started the last round with, skip over this. single crochet in the first stitch (with the marker). Chain 2. Place stitch marker in this space. Single crochet in next stitch. Skip a stitch. single crochet in next stitch. Chain 2. Single crochet in next stitch. Skip a stitch. Repeat until the end of the round.
Round 3-desired height: single crochet into first chain 2 space. Chain 2. Single crochet into same space. place chain marker in this new chain 2 space. Single crochet into next chain 2 space. Chain 2. Single crochet into same space. Repeat until end of round. Add as many of these rounds as you need. When I used the medium bulk yarn, I did 3 of these for my 7.5in head.
First decreasing round: single crochet in first chain two space. place a stitch marker in this single crochet. Single crochet two together (crochet those two chain 2 spaces together. Treat chain 2 spaces like regular stitches). Single crochet. Single crochet two together. Alternate sc and sc2tog until end of round.
Final round: remove stitch marker. single crochet 2 together until it is as closed as you can get it. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail to sew on the pom pom. Pull the tail through the final working loop.

Pom Pom: Wrap yarn around tines of fork approximately 30-40 times, leaving a little tail. Cut the yarn and tie two tails together. Cut a piece of yarn and send through the middle space between tines. Tie in double knot as tightly as possible. You can do this multiple times if necessary, just don't let that wrap get too thick. Slide off tines. Each side will have loops. Cut the loops open on each side. Cut all the little pieces to be the same length. Roll in hand to make ends fluffy.

Finishing: send hook through small hole left in center of hat and pull tail trough. Weave end from the band. use the tail from the body to sew the pom pom in place.

Here is the pattern I adapted to get this. I did change a few things, because some parts of this pattern looked really bad when doll sized.

If you try this, stick a picture in the comments for me to see!
