I hope this helps with the whole wig staining situation. I found this fantastic website that helps inform you in BJD care, http://aquilla429.wordpress.com/bjd-maintenencecare/ It has information about wig stains and much more. It helped me so much. I hope it helps you.
My boy has wig stains on his head, if I use acetone to remove them, it'll remove the sealant too, right? So I can just put more sealant on him? I hope that won't be a problem...
Ok so my OrientDoll Tae has bad wig stains on his head, and when tried to use acetone to remove them it worked but it left this little spot that is shinier like the rest of his body, not matte like his face. My friend told me it was just the sealant coming off but I want to be sure. Will putting more sealant on him help? He has snow skin, if that is any help...
Using acetone to clean your doll's face will remove the sealant and faceup as well and could even damage the resin depending on the type of doll. The shiny spot is bare resin. You'll need to re-coat the doll's face to even it out. Check out some of the other threads in the stickies on cleaning and maintenance.
Well, the face up is kept on with the sealant, so if you remove the sealant the face up comes too. Also, acetone is NOT recommended as a remover, it can damage resin permanently(cause the resin to pit and soften/melt). Try a magic eraser and water with soap first like is mostly suggested in this thread
i have had the same thing happen, and although it is extremely frightening, it is easily fixed..... try rubbing, gently, with a damp Mr Clean Magic Eraser, being careful to rub as little of the actual face up area as possible. pat dry with a paper towel, and you should be good to go.
I tried the eraser, unfortunately they had sunk into the resin a lot, so i wasn't able to remove them
Just thought to post in, Luts has got a new silicone cap, granted it's only SD size right now, but it's great for keeping the wig on good and keeping the cap from staining In some cases, even help keep the head cap on better. http://eluts.com/frontstore/Item/it...art_id=lutsdoll&level=&mother_catalog_num=649
I'm pretty knew to BJD's so, I'm going to buy a light black, light caramel and a silver with gold colored wig. I know dark colored wigs can stain a doll's head, so I was planning on buying a silicone wig cap but then I found a thread of someone who used a silicone wig cap and it had stained her doll's head. So I was wondering if there are any alternatives to a silicone wig cap. And is there a possibility that the caramel and the silver colored will stain as well?
Volks sells on their website a wig cap that is made out of fabric no silicone. They are very inexpensive. Volks also states on their website that even light colored wigs can stain. I have not experienced this yet but... you never know.
I know this is something that happens often, especially with a dark wig. But how do you feel about wig stains on your dolls head? Does it bug you to the point of sanding, or is it something you don't really care about because you can cover it up?
The only wig-stained doll I have is my first boy, Yumero. Last time I redid his face-up I noticed his head cap was stained with dark blue so I just washed the headcap and sealed it so the resin won't get anymore stains. If it'd be on the head, as long as it's covered I wouldn't really mind it either but I'd prefer if only the sealant would be stained. I don't know how I'd feel if my dolls' heads would be FOREVER weird colored somewhere visible.
My Kassia has a gray wig stain. She has a face plate so it is more on the edge of her head since she has no "head cap". I normally would use Windsor & Newton brush cleaner then seal the head but since it is partially on her face I just have a silicone head cap. I cannot bare removing her face up it is too perfect.
Besides the main thread linked in the sticky, here's one more from this forum (there are tons of others): http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=286626 You will also find threads about this in Sewing, Wigs, and Jewelrymaking.
I coat my dolls entire head and body so that if any stains from a wig occur, it's pretty easy to take off. My Bory girl has some stains on her head, but she always wears the same two wigs, so her bangs and the wig itself can cover up any stains until I have time to give her a new face-up.
I understand that wigs should not stay on a doll for too long; it might stain. So, in general, how long is a safe time period for keeping a wig on a doll? How often must you remove the wig in order to ensure no staining? Please let me know soon; I am a new BJD owner! xD; (And just in case you were wondering, I have a Dollmore Model Doll. With a black wig. I heard that black wigs are at higher risk of staining...?)
It totally depends on the doll and the wig. I leave all my dolls wigs on all the time, and have had only the tiniest minor bit of faint staining on the sealer on one doll's head. I've got a shirt that left a stain after barely bumping a doll and some wigs could stain super-easily, too. I keep some Magic Erasers around in case, but am not too worried. Wig stains are covered by the wig, and they don't go around bald.
My dolls almost never have thier clothes on, but they balk at sitting naked and wigless. Generally, I find that most wigs don't stain; there are some that do but it's up to the individual wig to judge on wether it will stain or not. Staining can generally happen with black wigs. But like Amy said, I wouldn't worry much about staining- it can ussually be removed with a magic eraser, or is else completely hidden by the wigs your doll wears in the first place. Your doll, as it is owned by you and played with, will take some gentle wear and tear over time, and may yellow, but all that's to be expected, and shouldn't be worried too much about, as long as you're the kind of owner who takes good care of your dolls. All damage would be minimal that way, if any is taken at all, and it won't effect how much you love him/her any more or any less. :3.
Okay, thanks~! Both of you, thanks! I suppose some wig staining is okay then ? Hm... assuming that my doll will keep her wig on, I guess staining won't be an issue; no one will see it. So if there is a stain, I can use a magic eraser to rub it off? Um... xD; This will sound like a silly question, but what exactly is a magic eraser? In other words, where would I be able to buy one?
A Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. You're in the US, I think, so look in any grocery store, WalMart, Family Dollar... just about anywhere that carries cleaning supplies has them. They'll be with the cleaning sprays and sponges and things. They're great for cleaning marks on floors and walls, too. I usually check wigs after a few hours, and again in a couple days, and after that whenever I have it off for some other reason. If it was staining a LOT I wouldn't leave it on or would use a silicone wig cap or try washing it (if it wouldn't mess up the style), but for minor light things I just clean them with a Magic Eraser.
Just for the record... I'm assuming that your wig is also from Dollmore? I've had my Torrie girl for over 2 years now. Her wig is a dark, deep wine color, from Dollmore. She's never had another wig except for one photoshoot and hasn't stained at all. It's impressively colorfast, so if your wig is from Dollmore too, I wouldn't worry at all. My DiM boy has a dark brown DiM wig that did stain his headcap a bit, but like they said, it's easily removed. No big deal!
Mine are wigged and dressed the whole time and I've never had any wig staining - I use silicone wig caps on most of them, which might help - although they can sometimes react to the MSC/dealeron the faceup and cause a bit of discolouration (calling it staining is a bit of an overreaction, I think) along the line where the edge of the wig cap overlaps the edge of the faceup on the forehead... It hasn't happened to any of mine and it's the area always covered byt he wig anyway so it wouldn't bother me. I have had a problem with purple stainign on the leags and lower torso from some britches my Chiwoo wore for a couple of weeks. It cleaned off, but I took precautions after that and put some white tights on under the britches as a stain barrier whenever he wears them, which seems to have worked.... so long undies it my answer to clothes that are likely to stain. Hope this helps Teddy
Some brown and black wigs stain my dolls head. Nonetheless, I leave the wigs on all the time. I find the stains that some clothes cause more annoying. My R-ASIAM's default shirt and arm warmers caused some bad stains on his body. Since that I wash darker outfits before my dolls are allowed to wear them.
Okay, thanks for the feedback everyone! @Glace leau -- Yes, the wig is the default wig from Dollmore. ^_^ No worries then! I suppose I'll just keep the wig on 24/7 and not worry about it. ^_^ I looove her wig too, so I don't want to change it. >.<
Most wigs will NOT stain, however, there are exceptions: Home Dyed wigs: Make SURE to wash these untill the water runs clean, or you could have some funk on the top of your doll's head Dark Blue,Red, Brown, Black: Most companies wigs don't stain, but if you buy a dark colored wig from a reletively unknown company, or off of ebay try wetting the tip of it to see if some dye will come off, if it does wash the whole thing, most fiber wigs are okay with taking a few washes, just let them air dry DO NOT blow dry them they WILL melt XD To avoid staining on resin, make sure that the top of the doll's head is coated or has a silicone wig cap on it, stained coating is easy to remove and is not a problem =3
It's not just dark wigs, even a light coloured wig, if it has a dark wig cap, has the potential to stain. This happened with my Kun, who has an orange wig, and it stained her so badly that it has set in her resin fairly deep. Magic Eraser only lightened the worst of the stains, so it can be permanent damage. The same thing happened with one of my Bluefairy minis and his staining is also something that will not come out. Sure you can't see it when their wigs are on, but if I ever decide to sell either one, it is damage that will affect their value. Now, I'll let them keep their wigs on for photoshoots and maybe for a few hours during the day, but they are stored naked and wigless in their boxes to prevent it from happening ever again.
Okay. Hm... I don't think staining will be a problem since it's from Dollmore. I store her in her box with her clothes and wig on; I haven't taken anything off yet since I got her. XD I'm paranoid that if I take her wig off, I might have trouble getting it back on right... >.<
Beware Leekeworld's Royal Gray. It stains like you would not believe for me it is no biggie since it is my dolls permanent wig. I did recently put a silicone cap just to keep the staining to a minimum. It also stained he ears a tad LOL good thing she is a vampire.
You have a dollpire!~ That's awesome. Okay, I will keep that in mind about the Royal Gray. I don't plan on getting a new wig for my doll though; I love the current wig too much!
Pardon for asking, but where exactly would you be able to find a silicone cap? I too am I new doll owner and would like to prevent her staining too much if any - she is a Souldoll, anyone know if they are known to stain easily?
Denver Doll carries silicone wig caps, and probably other places do to. I've heard of people cutting part of a clear or white balloon and using that, but I've not tried it myself. I have an older Souldoll body (but not a head, so no wig stains) and her boots did stain her feet slightly after being on for over a month, but it came right off with a Magic Eraser.
Magic erasers are essential for removing clothing and wig stains. Any mark that doesn't come off with a damp cloth gets tackled by the Magic Eraser. I have been known to stash a chunk of it inside a doll head when taking them out, and keep a bit of it in my doll carrier's pockets as well. It can take off sealer with much rubbing, so I don't use it on faces (maybe a very, very gentle wipe, but only if nothing else works).
Okay, thanks~! But it's okay to use on head and clothes? I haven't even taken off my doll's clothes that she came in or her wig yet. XD
I think Dollmore is the only company that sends their dolls out with clothes and wig on, LOL! I am planning to order one of their limiteds in a few months, I wonder if I can request they send him bald and naked like normal? Magic Erasers are basically micro-sanding sponges, they work by cleaning the resin with a very fine abrasive action - not enough to scratch or anything, but enough to get off stains. I always start with a damp cloth on smudges and marks, and if that doesn't work I move to the Magic Eraser dry, then wet if that doesn't help. Be very careful using it on faceups though, it can remove them if you rub too much.
Okay. ^_^ Oh really? I was happy that they sent her all dressed and wigged. xD;; When I opened the box, she was already all put together~! Okay, thanks for the explanation!
I think you mean heat resistant? I don't think that matters, it's probably the same as anything- it depends on the wig and the doll. I don't have any heat-resistant wigs yet though, so I'm not saying that from personal experience. If a wig is heat-resistant it is labeled as such, generally.
I currently have a gray mohair wig with white tips, is there any chance of it staining? if so will it ruin the white tips to wash it?
Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me. I recently bought a Luts Kid Delf Bory girl and a dark brown wig, I know her heads going to get stained, is there anything i can do to the wig to stop it from bleeding onto my doll? thanks ^^ Oh and any ways to get stains off the doll without having to find Magic Erasers? Like home remedys and such... thanks alot!
Do spray ur dolly with Citadel, MSC or similar ^^. Otherwise go to sainsbury;s or tesco and get the shop's brand Oxy cleaner (Vanish powder), which is cheaper and works GREAT! Dilute the powder in relatively warm water Soak the stained parts Leave for a few hours (this will clean ur dolly as well ^^) another alternative Use a Mr. Clean magic eraser (u can find it in pound stretcher, robert Dyas) Another one: in the chemist ask for Isopropil alcohol, tell them is for an open wound I.e piercing :P and use it to clean the stained bit. CAREFUL WITH THIS ONE IT WILL REMOVE THE FACE-UP
You can get a silicone wig cap to help block the staining. Nothing works for cleaning nearly as well as Magic Erasers, because it very lightly sands the surface. You can use paper towels or sponges or towels, it just takes a lot of work with stains.
What I do is stick masking or regular tape on the inside of the wig cap anywhere it contacts the head (not the headcap though). It won't stain, and it comes off the wig easily.
thanks for the advice! I will trty and hunt down a Robbet Dyas if i can, if theyre still around. and as for the wig i will try soaking it, i think my mom uses vanish lol
Is the wig actually staining? Because lots of my dolls wear brown and black wigs and the only staining I've had is a tiny bit on the MSC on the forehead of ONE of them, no stains on resin at all. Most wigs don't stain, I think. They CAN, but many don't. Magic erasers really are the best thing to use. That and washing the wig to remove excess dye if it is staining. Or a silicone wig cap, or tape or moleskin over the part of the wig that touches the face.
In the upper right corner of each DoA subforum's front page, there is a "Search This Forum" box. If you come to Painting, Customizing, and Esthetics, and type "wig AND stain" in the "Search This Forum" form, you will get several pages of results.
Hi, I have a Musedoll Re-an. I've kept her in a very safe glass case and she had a dark wig on her head. I'm still getting to know these dolls so little did i know that the wig would stain her head. I got a Mr Clean Magic sponge and scrubed the spots thoroughly. It lessend the spots a little but they are still very visable. Is there some other way to get these stains out or did I ruin my BJD? Thanks, ~Neryo~
most likely the staining is in her sealant only. are the stains only on her head, or are they on the headcap too? that is the easiest way to tell. (also, you're more likely to get help if you mention in the title what the trouble is. a vague Help please! gives no idea as to what kind of help is needed, whether it's help with cracks, dents, breakage, staining or what.)
Hmm, if you don't mind some of the sealant rubbing off, you could always use clear nailpolish remover or windsor and newton brush cleaner. It WILL take the sealant off, though, so if you do that be very careful as to where that stuff goes.
Yeah, I never leave anything on my dolls except white clothing. I'm super paranoid that they will get messed up x.x
