Wig Staining: Prevention, Cleanup and Feedback on Various Mfrs.

Jan 3, 2005

    1. I'm sorry to hear the magic eraser didn't work. That's always fixed it for me. Did you try getting the sponge a little damp first? At the NY dollpa Volks was selling a cleaning spray that worked really well on my dolls, as well.

    2. brighnasa - I actually went back and tried again after posting -- after reading someone's post above that they magic erasered for 20 minutes -- I think I may have just needed to SCRUB HARDER. I need to stop being such a priss, LOL. I never do scrub hard enough because I'm worried about screwing up somehow. Scrubbing REALLY REALLY HARD seemed to make a bit of a dent in the stain, and I felt a little better. I'm gonna go out and buy a new magic eraser instead of a small shred of one and see if that makes any difference.

    3. urg. I had a second-hand black wig stain. Either Luts or Dollmore, I think. The magic eraser didn't work. *sigh* At least it doesn't show when he's wearing a wig, of course, but I don't want to use that wig anymore and now I'm leery of buying any black wigs...

    4. I've got a red Luts wig that's the only wig I've ever had staining problems with. But it only seems to stain my DZ mini... our Delf has 3 black Luts wigs that haven't left so much as a spot on him (and he spends weeks at a time in each of them). I think you just need to assume the worst and check for stains every so often so you can get to them when they're more liable to come up.

    5. I use (don't laugh) Oxy 10 to remove dye stains from my vinyl Obitsu doll, would it work on stains like this, do you think? I slather a thick layer onto the stain and leave the part under a lamp for a few hours, and it works a treat!

My resin girl wears a black wig all the time and it hasn't stained yet, but I'd like to be prepared.

edit: BTW I find Clearasil doesn't work at all. Different formulation, maybe.

    6. I've had my Moon in a natural black wig (two different ones in fact) for a couple of months and I've yet to have him stain. I'd honestly advise just taking his wig off occasionally, checking, and as everyone else said, if something looks off, gently rub Magic Eraser over the spot.

      I've actually had more problems with clothes staining Taira than wigs. -__-;

    7. I haven't had problems with any black Luts or Leeke wigs staining, either...but the boys never keep it on their heads for that long >_> not for like weeks or months.

I regularly shampoo the wigs just because I have a bad case of sweaty hands which gets them kinda sticky after a while, but it doesn't seem that any color is coming off from shampooing it, either.

    8. It has happened.
Corbin's wig stained on his head. Great.

BUT it is removeable with a magic eraser!
You just need some patience with scrubbing it off, haha.

    9. My Shine's natural black wig is beginning to leave a little stain I think :(
Noob question now, magic eraser!? Where do I get this from?

    10. In the cleaning aisle of any store. I found ours at the drugstore but I've seen them at grocery stores as well.

    11. sephyelysian - Thanks, Ill be needing one of those

    12. do white wigs stain?

    13. No. White wigs do not stain, because they have not been dyed with a pigment. Pigment leeching from the fibers of the wig hair or the elastic is what stains a doll.

    14. Do anyone know where to get these "head caps" of silicone?

    15. Denver doll, and Juju's dolly mall.

    16. Warning to Iplehouse wig users:
My black Iplehouse wig has stained Ryushin's head badly.

    17. Oh, the black Leeke wig I had stained Alexius' headcap sometime ago, quite faint, but still there... His wig colour is brown, but the cap inside is black, which might explain why...

    18. My El has a TINY bit of black staining on his head from his luts wig. Oddly enough its only on the edges of where the wig cap rests, not on the rest of his head (and of course, its over his forehead only!) I don't worry about it though..the wig always hides it (of course lol) and I haven't tried magic eraser because it'd have to take some of the coating off to get the stain and I love his pretty face..

    19. My light silver wig has stained my Juri A... the back of his neck was filthy... and in trying to clean it of, his coating has started to come off.... so I stopped and have stashed him away for now.

I'm not sure what to do... I don't want to futher strip his coating off... and some of the stains are on the upper part of his forehead... and his pointy little ears. :(

      Suggestions?

    20. I found these wig caps at the Denver Doll emporium web site that are supposed to prevent any kind of staining in the scalp of the doll, and supposed to prevent slipping of the wig. Why don't you give 'em a whirl? I don't know if they work, but they seem to really like them. Go to http://www.denverdoll.com/wigcaps.php Good luck!!!

    21. Acitone is a no, no. Can eat resin. You should tried Mr. Clean eraser.
Work the best wet or dry. And can get detailed.

    22. Leeke wine wig = did stain (the cap seems to be responsible)
Leeke black wig = did not (go figure)
Jpop Leeda wig in black = did stain

I've wrapped some non-PVC clingfilm (plastic wrap) around the stainables heads (you can add a rubber band over the top to hold it).

Re: The silicone headcaps. Quite frankly, I think $10 is a ripoff for something that might also stain.

    23. The silicone cap stained one of my girls terribly - It's been a nightmare trying to get it all off!

    24. I've only had my MDD since wednesday and I already have stains on her head and right ear! I was warned about using the gel caps for holding on wigs. Especially dark wigs. But I had used the Volks cotton cap and it never got any stains on it so I thought there would be no problem using the gel cap. I did so in order to hold some magnets underneath which were problematic under the Volks cap (Not tight enough and they kep slipping).

I managed to rub out most of the staining round the head but it's still there. Her right ear is problematic. The staining is a mark on the top and a couple of tiny dots on the folds inside the ear. Luckily it's not a big issues since I can hide any marks with a wig but it's still damned annoying! I avoided dark colored clothes as well and have protective undergarments. But the wig caught me out a bit thinking it was OK to use it with gel cap since it was OK with the cotton cap (No marks on that). So the gel must interact and cause the dye to seep.

To anyone thingking of using the gel caps on dark hair. Don't!

    25. If you need to remove the stain, find somewhere that stocks OXY10 (not any other oxy, must be 10) either on eBay or online or get your pharmacy to order it. If you put it on her in the area of staining and leave it over night, then wipe it off and repeat for about a week, the stain should fade to nothing. Vinyl dolls stain like a B*TCH -__-

    26. Thanks. Will try that. I also found a couple of black marks on her hands. WTH! I have NO idea how they got there. Her hands have not been near ANYTHING black or dark that could cause those marks. Perhaps they were always there and I did not notice until looking for them.

I will give the OXY10 a try though (If I can find some locally otherwise will order from Ebay like you said).

    27. if we are talking vinyl here i had a vinyl doll that stained terribly when a pen exploded on the poor girl, i used a couple of times soaking with bleach and it worked pretty well withought damaging the color of the vinyl, and bleach should be readily availible (though i belive it was clorox cleanup i used)

    28. Well since it's the head that is the problem I don't fancy soaking it in bleach. I have applied Oxy10 and will leave it on until tomorrow and then clean it off and see if it is helping any. BTW does anyone know if WD40 is harmful to vinyl? I have one of those pens that removes gunk and scuff marks etc. Not used it on my doll obviously. It contains petroleum distillates. Is it harmful? Just curious.

UPDATE: The Oxy 10 really works! Nearly all the staining on her head is gone after 1 treatment. Cool! Only the two spots on the hands remain stubborn. Put a bit more on them and will just keep trying for a few days. If that does not work will try the Magic Eraser I ordered when it arrives. If that don't work then I will just live with them (At least until I get fedup and buy new hands heh). Only very small spots you would hardly notice them unless you was really looking. But they still annoy me. Oh well at least I have some extra tools in my armory now :)

    29. My question is - What gel caps? I dont' think I've ever heard of them

      Teddy

    30. http://www.laurebellecouture.com/doll_wig_caps.htm

As I said it may be that what has happened is that after it's stretched over the head and the wig placed on. Maybe then the gel cap shrunk back a little because the stains were only around the areas where the edge of the cap SHOULD have been protecting.

    31. Ah. I'm with you now. Laurence's silicone wigcaps - I have them on all my dolls, light and dark haired alike and have never had any problems. I'm just about to order a few more for the dolls that arrived this week, in fact.

They wouldn't protect the ears, sicne they wouldn't cover the ears anyway - it sounds liek your wig has a lot of "loose" colour and that's staingin the head and years where it touches around the edges of the silicone cap.

Have you tried washing it to see if you can get rid of the excess colour?

I've never had a probelm with stainign form wigs myself, but I've heard some horror stories, which is why I started buying the silicone caps in the first place... and once I discovered how great they are for keeping wigs form slipping too, I got them for all my BJD instead of just the ones with dark hair.

The oxy 10 should take out the staining. I used it to revive one of my childhood vinyl dolls (covered in blue bruises from having been stored in a box with ablue lining for years) last year, and you wouldn't know the doll was ever stained now. It took a few applications but it works great on vinyl dolls.

Good luck with geting the last of the staining out

      Teddy

    32. The staining is gone. Oxy 10 did the job. The gel Cap I trimmed to fit a little less conspicously. Perhaps I should have left a bit more leeway for the wig. In any canse I am happy with the white cap I got from Volks. I found I can still get the magnets underneath once the wig is on by sliding them underneath the front. They still slip a bit with movement. I may get another cap and just glue the magnets onto it for accessory ears. BTW washing the wig. How do you go about it? I would have to mess around taking the white ribbons off the braided ponytails. One of the braids is coming loose as it is even though it's got one of those round plastic clips hidden underneath the ribbons. It's an akward wig to be honest. I am looking at getting a milk wig and a nice blonde wavy wig if I see the one I like (I have but it sold out).

    33. I'd do a search on doll wig washing (here on DoA initially and moving on to Google if htast gets no results) for the details, I've washed human size wigs but I'm sure there are special techniques and tips for washing doll wigs (and suggestions for removing or fixing loose dye in them)

You probably would have to take the wig out of the ponytails/bunches/braids and redo them once the wig is washed and dried.

As to buying oter wigs - places to check would be juju's dollymall
      http://www.jujusdollymall.com/cgi-bin/dept?dpt=H&srch=DC&tier2=T4

      and Denver Doll Emporium
      http://www.denverdoll.com/index.php
(scroll down the menu on the left side of the screen until you get to the wigs section and check out each section inder that.

I've bought stuff from both and they are friendly and helpful to deal with.

    34. Dollga/Leekeworld choco brown = BAD BAD STAINER.

I had the dollga "princess" with bangs on Sabrina, in choco brown, and omg. BAD BAD STAINER. Some serious scrubbing with a mr clean sponge did save the day, but holy schlamoly. The elastic - which of course sits RIGHT across the CENTER of her forehead, as in, if you take that wig off and put a wig on with NO BANGS - it would show - was the culprit.

      %&$* staining!!!!!!!!

    35. Ein's wig stained his priddy skin, and I don't have any acetone .__. Where can I buy it? I want to buy him a cute short curly wig soon and I don't want the black skin to shooow.

    36. My MNF Seorin had his Luts wig stain his head pretty badly. To remove it, I scrubbed his head first with a dry Magic Eraser and then I wet the Magic Eraser and went again at the stain. I managed to get it completely off. I really recommend trying that before you do acetone as it's a little harsh. ^^;; Just be patient and don't panic when it doesn't come off in five seconds. To get my Seorin's head clean I had to scrub for half an hour. I'd also recommend washing his wig to prevent further staining. We did that with our Luts and Leeke wigs and have had no problems.

      Good luck!:aheartbea

    37. Ok, now Im just getting scared. I have ordered two wigs from Soom a black fwig and a dark brown wig, does anyone have any thoughts or experiences with Soom wigs? How about Dollzone wigs? I am certainly going to wash them as soon as they get here, but I want to know if anyone has had any problems with Soom or Dollzone wigs first. Also, should I go as far as washing them in a vinegar and water solution or just regular shampoo and water (in warm water?)?

    38. i usually get off all kinds of stains with magic sponge 8D so far wigs haven been giving me a problem.

    39. Uh, I'd try regular shampoo and warm water. I've never had to wash any of my wigs in vinegar because giving them a couple of rinses with the other usually does the trick.

    40. Tankie!!! I will put that knowledge to use when the wigs get in. ~*(^_^)*~

    41. I just took my doll out to use as a model and her wig fell off revealing blue marks along her head and ears. I tried soap and water but it wont take them off what should i do? I got the wig at the dolletable swap meet so i don't know what brand it is. Please help! :...(

    42. have you tried scrubbing it with a magic sponge?? magic eraser? whatever its called?

    43. no I don't have one of those where do you get them?

    44. walmart might have them (thats where i buy mine from in the UK)

    45. Magic erasers (its a mr.clean product) can be found anywhere from food stores to hardware stores, basically anywhere that carries home cleaning supplies.

    46. magic erasers are life savers for bjd owners, they are considered a must have. where do you live? they may not sell them around you. if they dont maybe you can get someone here to sell you one.

    47. just in case they dont sell them where you live her is one on ebay
      http://cgi.ebay.com/Mr-Clean-Magic-...5149493QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

and if you ever search for one again just make sure your buying the eraser not the cleaning powder or the other stuff

and like the person below me said they are sold eveywhere, if you live by a walmart or walgreens they should have them. if not look for one at a drugstore

    48. it's a "Mr. Clean" brand item called Magic Eraser. you should be able to get it at the supermarket in the cleaning supplies aisle, or i get mine at CVS drugstore.

you can try dish detergent as long as it doesn't have any coloring in it, and i have used Bon Ami cleanser without harm to my doll's heads.

acetone free (colorless) nail polish remover is safe in small doses, and wash it off quickly. also, windsor and newton brand brush cleaner can be used to remove face ups, but i don't know about dye stains.

there are "stickies" with all kinds of information in the "painting, customizing" thread. you might want to read through those before attempting anything you are not sure of!

also, be careful to protect your dollie's face up! you don't want to accidentally remove it!

    49. my dolly luckly doesn't have a face up yet so i don'y have to worry about that.

    50. Sabrina tries to solve the wig-staining problem by offering to be a guinea pig…She's been wearing this wig for 2 weeks and it's a BAD stainer. I do think this solves the problem. The nylon is a foot thing I got at target and it only is supposed to cover your toes to the ball of your foot. So it's kind of like a stocking cap. Follow that by a wide plain (make sure it's plain!!) rubber band and when you put the staining wig on, make sure the ELASTIC BAND is sitting on top of the rubber band.

    51. Great idea Sher. I will try to do the same. ~Gus

    52. I got the magic eraser but it did nothing. What do I do now?

    53. Try using a Magic eraser with 99.9% Isopropyl alcohol ( which you can also get off Ebay). But be careful as this combination will also remove MSC and face ups.

    54. did you wet the eraser?

    55. What kind of doll do you have? If she's vinyl there are different ways of stain removal than if she's resin. ^_^

    56. I got blone wig from Eluts. It is in soft color so i do not think that it will make problem with my boy but it did.Y_Y My boy has yellow stain on his head.

I tried to erase it by magic sponge but it still has some stain left and my boy make up was a little remove

      *cry

    57. Yes, like Moruganu said.
Caps are like the only ways to prevent them. Once you receive the cap you gotta trim it just enough, but too much and staining may come back. trust me on that one.

I got all of mine from here.

    58. whoops, it posted me twice... o_o
