This week I jumped into wig making head 1st and I've been trying out a couple of techniques I made sure to really wash this synthetic fiber that I got from Michael's. A lot of dye came off of it. I practice a couple types of techniques to see what works the best for me. I think I like separating the fibers by hand and Using modbpodge glue to create wefts. I tried a couple different bases for the wig but my favorite was using a fine cloth and covering it in hot glue. Then hot glowing down the wefts.
This is lovely! If you’ve ever made yarn wefts for wigs, would you say this material is easier or faster to work with? If you haven’t no worries, I’ve been using yarn for my wigs and while it’s easy to get lots of colors and works great for short and fluffy styles, this fiber looks like it retains more length.
This brand is Loops & threads- Chunky Luxe This particular line has been discontinued but it's acrylic roving yarn. You can still buy some online 2nd hand, it's pretty affordable. Roving yarn is usually not sold in stores so when I saw it I grabbed a couple. It tends to fall apart really easily because it hasn't been spun or twisted into regular yarn. But I think that's why it works so well for doll wigs because it's easy to pull apart those fibers without having to brush it too much. You can retain a lot of length that way. There are a bunch of brands that have acrylic, cotton and wool roving online. I haven't tried too many but I will post to this thread if I do try different brands. This was my 1st time experimenting with it so I'm gonna practice some more than post some videos to my Instagram. Hope that helps!! @too_many_hobbies
could you show how you use hot glue for the cap??? I know many people do that but i’ve never gotten it to not look thick or bulky since it’s too hot to flatten properly!
Oh this is easy! So I wrapped the head in plastic wrap and laid down a thin fabric. I secured it with a hair tie Then started to glue with the glue gun. I put a pea size amount of hot glue and spread it out while it was hot on the fabric. I used a spatula for a clay molding kit (like the second wooden one) https://www.charlotteobserver.com/r.../2022/04/SERONLINE-Polymer-Clay-Tools.CO_.jpg
Hm, interesting!! that's basically the same as the white/elmers glue but with a hot glue gun. I think maybe my issue is not being confident in the thickness of the hot glue :0 I've moved on to silicone glue but the hot glue still intrigues me
did you flat iron the wefts or did you leave as is? i have some roving yarn from hobby lobby and i noticed without flat ironing it it kinda stuck to itself a lot :/
