Wide Format Digital Print Backdrops - What's the best type of media to use?

Aug 3, 2013

    1. Hi Everyone =^-^=

Just recently I invested in a brand new professional lighting kit (rather than my old simple soft box kit) which came with a brilliant backdrop kit that would be perfect to holding doll-sized photography backdrops. Now, in one of my previous "Job Lives" I worked for several years in wide format digital print, sign vinyl and screen printing media sales which involved sales in digital print ready fabrics, wallpapers and flexible PVC sheeting which would be perfect types of media for printing backdrops. Hence, I have a question for anyone who has either tried printing their own backdrops or purchased pre-printed backdrops (I am waiting on some of the pre-printed types myself to experiment with).... what types of media do you find work best? Matte Paper, Digitally printed canvas or screen / flag materials, polycarb or pvc sheeting? What are other people using or experimenting with out there?
I know a whole host of old clients I could ask to help out with the printing and can buy media wholesale from my old workplace or a few other potential sources but I don't know what type of media would be best to try first. I'm erring on the side of the thick digital flag material or semi sheer screen material used for theatrical backdrops, or the pvc coated canvas media used for banners and billboards...some of which can be backlit, which could be used to interesting effect, but I'd like to know what others are already using and what's working well for them at the moment first before I go investing money in anything like this. Has anyone else had a play around with this sort of thing themselves?
