Who's a nerd? Female Na'vi 1/6 scale...

Jan 28, 2010

    1. ... which means she'll be about 18-20 inches tall by the time I'm done.
She'll be to the same scale as my husband's WWII action figures (dollies)...

The flesh-coloured blobs are will be used to shape the sockets for the arms. I'm challenging myself to not bake any piece more than twice.

The head is WAY smaller than what I'm used to - the Na'vi are 10 heads tall - rather than the 5 or 6 'cute' ratio that I prefer.

the head has NOT been sanded - I have finally got hold of some sculpey 'softener' which, when brushed over uncured clay, melts the clay a wee bit & helps to give a consistency to the surface. New favourite thing.

    2. looking awesome!!! beautiful body, and I like the head a lot! are you going to cut the torso to make it easier for stringing/better mobility?

      beautiful project!

    3. She looks fantastic! I can't wait to see more ^^ I'm excited to see how you do her tail and hair pieces <3

    4. That looks so cool! I love the body, (especially the hip bones) and the profile of the face. So graceful~
I'm not sure, but her nose might be sort of asymmetrical there at the bottom.

    5. wow I love her!

    6. Oh my god. Go for it. I want to buy if you think you'll make casts of it.

    7. Hehehe, the places where dust has collected in little dips while sanding looks like the spots on Na'vi faces.

    8. this is wonderful - I loved avatar and would love to see a bjd navi - I agree with the nose comment - somehow I think thier noses were smaller? (from memory!:o)

    9. She looks great, you really got that elongated Na'vi torso right. Don't worry, I'm a nerd too - I'm working on sort of an epic fic with two Na'vi OCs, and it's actually crossed my mind to sculpt them. Which I still may sometime :3

    10. The noses aren't so small, actually. Probably you got into the film and stopped noticing. lol What I wondered was if the navel was a bit low? I can't remember that detail so well. I know female navels tend to be lower than on a male, but that seems super low to me.

Really great work over all. I can't wait to see her finished!
I would seriously covet a male Na'vi doll.

    11. Ohhh I love it! When I first saw the movie, I thought to myself, man, these guys are PERFECT doll material.. they've got the big luminous eyes, and the skin that you could make with a mix of sparkles and blue and clear sculpey... and I can't imagine it being done more lovely than your seems to be turning out. Can't wait to see the rest! You've got the proportions down so spot on ^_^

    12. Wow, thanks guys!
This is a fun sculpt - and really challenging, as the proportions are so different to what I gravitate to.

heh - I didn't notice the one flared nostril til it was pointed out!
I've been using Neytiri as my ref - but when I did the face I didn't have any pics in front of me - was flying blind so the sculpts nose has turned out a bit wider toward the tip than her's... more like her mothers. Some of them had wider noses - some quite fine...

I do want to do a male Na'vi - he'll be my next project...

That damn navel - I kept putting it higher (because it should be higher) then cursing when I checked against my reference images....
[IMG] and moving it back down.

I've baked the torso - and hack-sawed it up. I took some photo's, but will have to post them later (I don't have my cable with me).

      Next steps:
      * 3 fingered hands (incidentally - this is one of my pet hates. I'm an animator - every time I see a 3-fingered hand I want to scream...)
      * ditto for the toes/feet
      * figuring out what to do with the tail?
      single piece or multiple joints?
      * ears - the placement of these is playing havoc with my internal this-goes-there/anatomy too.
and arms & legs of course...

I do want to cast her, but it's out of my means for a while. The Husband has just quit his job - so our income has dropped by more than half as I am now the sole 'breadwinner' for my family (talk about pressure...)
So - as I can't afford silicone - I'm going nuts with the sculpting (by the time I have saved enough for more - I bet I won't be able to prioritize what I want to cast...)

    13. Can't wait to see more!

    14. Lovely ^_^ I just saw Avatar yesterday.
I think you should do the tail in one piece. I always thought segmented tails looked like...well worms or insect parts. Gross.

    15. Well I think belly buttons go roughly at the top of the hip bone, and her hip bone looks pretty low so maybe that's why they put the naval there. But I'm sure nobody would have complained if it was higher anyway. XD;

As for the tail, maybe you could make it cleverly twisty so it will look like it's in different poses when it's rotated. X3 It's so long and skinny, how would you do a good jointed one anyway?

    17. can't wait to see more ^-^

    18. Are you still working on this? I just discovered it and I love it! I just wanted you to know~

    19. Oh wow, she's coming out beautifully so far. I can't wait to see her finished. Are you going to sculpt her ears on and then re-bake her? Those tiny, pointy ears seem like they'd be tricky at that scale.
