I'm trying to get mold smell out of a vinyl doll and shoes and tried three types of non-clumping unscented cat litter: 1. Catsan, which is quartz sand and chalk. Didn't remove any smell after 5 months. 2. Jipp Happy Home, which is sepiolite, also a couple months. No effect. 3. Agriselect, which is alganite. This time the doll made the entire plastic container smell, I had to throw away the container itself. After that, I put doll and shoes in baking soda, waited a week to check. Same effect, everything stank so much I did not trust it would do the trick without needing to replace the baking soda every couple of days. I'm going about in the same as always: first soak doll in borax. When dry wrap in thin paper, put a layer of litter in a container, place doll on top and cover with litter. Used the same containers several times before. The litter would maybe smell a bit moldy, but the doll and container would be fine. This doll did not smell funkier than other dolls I successfully removed the smell of. I *thought* I used Agriselect for them, but not sure anymore. Next, I'll try activated charcoal for the first time. Which exact cat litter do you all use? I want to check what material it is and see if I can get the same type of clay or sand over here in the Netherlands. Not looking for other methods right now; I love how cat litter used to make the doll smell completely neutral.
I have no experience with cat litter methods but I can highly recommend the product OxiClean Max Efficiency to remove smells/stains and the nice thing about it is that it is fast and won't take months . I don't know if they sell it over in the Netherlands but if they do I would give it a try, I have used it to remove awful cigarette/cat smell from a SD resin doll and her clothing and it only took a couple bathes to do it. It is a powder and I mix it with boiling hot water in a tub for the best results as it does not work as well with cold or just warm water. If you are able to try it maybe just try a small part to make sure it won't damage anything , I think I have used it on a Dollfie dream in the past but it never hurts to be careful at first Screenshot 2025-08-28 at 13-14-35 OxiClean Max Efficiency Stain Remover 252 Loads - Walmart.com by Stormyhorse, on Flickr
It’s not cat litter but we do use Gonzo’s Odor Eliminating Rocks at my job to remove odors like cigarette smoke from books. It’s cheap and works very well - just put the open bag in an enclosed container with the stinky item for a while. I bought mine from Amazon.
The cat-litter method is for things you don't want to or that can't be washed. You bury them in smell removing cat litter to deal with the issue instead. Teddy
I have soaked my doll in borax as mentioned. But was asking about cat litter without wanting to discuss other methods for now.
