I have a huge girl that desperately needs restringing, but the only shop I know of that has stringing kits (pre-cut lengths) only offers "SD" sized elastic kits as their largest. Other sites list their elastic in thickness, and I have no idea which thickness would be best, and no idea how much I would need. None of my other big dolls have ever needed new elastic, so somehow I've never had to do this before. Basically, how do you go about getting elastic for your 70 cm or larger dolls? I would really prefer not to use craft store elastic, as it doesn't last (unless you know of some that does). Thank you for any help!
I was going to suggest Dollstown as they sell 70 cm bodies and so they also offer elastic for sale, but the shipping is 10 times what the elastic set would cost you. I know JoAnn fabrics carry's some thicker string (elastic) that can be cut to size, but you have to take a sample to get an idea of thickness. You can also try Amazon; Yuck or even Ebay. Sometimes if you google diameter of elastic you might get more options, just be careful.
CoolCat sells elastic in lengths which are useful. 4mm for arms & 4.5mm for body/legs might be best if the channels are big enough to allow it. I just order several hanks of elastic & silicone kips there & figure there will always be another doll needing restrung so I buy enough to have extra on hand.
The Mill End Store in Milwakie, Oregon has the SD size elastic in white and tan! Love the tan elastic!
As far as I know, a lot of companies use craft store elastics as their default, so it should be fine. You would just need thicker ones for larger dolls. I'm not sure about 70cm dolls as I don't have them, could be a bit tricky to find in craft stores depending on your location. But for my 60cm doll, stringing is already a struggle because of how strong the elastic is - Personally I wouldn't want to do it again hahaha Just gonna send it to someone to do it for me if it needs adjustments.
