When browsing dolls, do you gravitate towards ones that look similar you?

Jan 26, 2017

    1. Do you seek out dolls that have similar facial features or eye-shapes like yours? (even when you may have a specific character in mind?)
Do you end up having a collection of dolls that look eerily similar?

      Just curious ~

    2. Nope. I feel like the few that I have look very different facial feature wise but they are all Fantasy inspired

    3. I can't say I've ever found a doll that looks similar to me. Most dolls don't have the appropriate features or proportions to actually look like people, with the exception of companies like Iplehouse.

However, there is a certain aesthetic I like, and I think all of my dolls reflect that. :kitty2

    4. I think I've never seen a doll that look like me, and I've never wanted one. But my dolls all look similar, because I only buy according my personal taste, I like more realistic features, and faces that look like Final Fantasy Characters. I don't create characters, so I buy only what I find cute or attractive. Maybe if I thought about different characters, I would have different dolls.

    5. I have a couple dolls my family say look like me  (probably cuz they are blonde)
But, if they do, it was definitely unconscious.

Most of my dolls however look nothing like me :thumbup

    6. I don't think a doll that looked like me would sell!

    7. I can't say I do, because there aren't a lot of dolls who look like me. My body shape isn't the average sculpt of a BJD, especially Asian inspired ones. My exact hair color also seems to be difficult to find, the reds I find are either way too light, or way too dark.

I would say in general some of the body shapes of BJDs are pretty close to each other, but the faces and how one customizes them makes the BJDs look different from one another. I also tend to like the looks of dolls who aren't human, or only half human looking.

    8. No.

    9. Nope, not in the slightest.

Starting with I collect females which I'm not.

And they dress much better than I do.

    10. Sort of. I specifically chose my first doll to look like a cutesy version of me, and every doll I've purchased since fits the same aesthetic. (And now that I'm conscious of it, I think they dress how I'd like to. I need to build my own wardrobe more.)

    11. The only thing that my dolls and I share is the shape of our faces, but I feel like the kind of pointed chin, rounded cheeks look is pretty generic for msd so I don't think that it was really something influenced by my subconscious. ^-^
(I really like sweet faces, and my face is like the epitome of grouchy all the time so I guess I'm looking for the opposite!)

    12. No. If a doll like me ever existed, I think I'd quit all kinds of dolls all together. Heh.

I just buy what's cute, pretty or handsome. Like another poster said, I'm not into creating characters out of my dolls. I just want them to dress up in clothes and make items for them. I guess that's a pretty basic, boring objective.

    13. I may have 1 or 2 that may be reminiscent of me in coloring or facial features only but I honestly do not buy dolls that look like me.

    14. Yes and no.

I have been analysing what I like and why I like certain things. While I find pretty, both downturned and upturned eyes, I am more attracted to upturned eyes like mine. I am also attracted to the same jawline like mine. For example, Baize from Loongsoul - jawline and cheeks, and You You from Doll Love - nose and lips. Although I do not own any of them, yet. My current dolls, Adori and L-bi, both have upturned eyes.

On another hand, I choose such dolls not, because they look like me, but because I am attracted to such facial features. And unconsciously I am attracted to such facial features because they look like me.:? This happens not only for me, but for a lot of people. Just not a lot of people ponder about it.

Moreover, I do not think, that this is something bad. In the end, what matters, is that collection brings happyness to the collector.;)

    15. I can safely say I look nothing like my 5th Motif Venitu.

    16. omg this is so true! i dress my dolls the way i would LIKE to dress. *sigh* wardrobe building for human-sized clothes is hard tho! Finding stuff that fits and looks good is difficult for me.

    17. Never have I found a doll as ugly as me lol.
Nah but for real, I rather look for my beauty ideal than for dolls that look like me. Probably because I don't like my look but as for dolls I pretty much have a taste and it is the complete opposite of me!

    18. Nope. I like things that are different from me and from each other. My Switch boys are similar and my dolls from Russian artists have a similar vibe but all look pretty different...I think.

    19. I doubt I'd get a doll that looked like me...I'm sometimes curious about what sculpt could look like me, but there are so many beautiful dolls out there, why would I get one so bland? ;)

    20. No, not at all. My dolls are all over the place looks-wise.

    21. Well, since I have only one doll, and he's male, I'd have to say my dolls don't look like me (thankfully ;)). However, the dolls I want do look a bit like me. Many of them have pouty lips and I prefer for them to be styled with a slightly sad face up (downturned eyes, eyebrows with little arch, pout emphasized, etc).
As for bodies, I like the ones that look the way I looked 10 pounds ago, so I don't know if that counts (I should be working out to make ME look like that again, but, you know, it's so much easier just to buy dollies that do :XD:).
Styling, we pretty much match. I got a couple things for Ashe that were different from my style, but that ended pretty quickly. Now I go by the rule that my dollies don't wear anything I wouldn't wear. :)

    22. Nope, I gravitate towards the ones whose faces I like. I think one that looked like me would creep me out. Also, it would probably be a child doll even though I'm over 30, because I'm one of those unfortunate (?) people who doesn't age and I look about 14 still.

    23. I'm generally turned off by my own appearance, so not really. However I do go after dolls that have the same pattern of features--ones similar to the dolls I already own.

      • x 1
    24. Absolutely not!
I recently realized that they all have something similar to a hime cut, though (;´∀`)

    25. I haven't seen any that look like me yet v.v

    26. Given how much I like manly, manly men with hawkish noses, I would have to say no. XDD

      • x 1
    27. Not at all.

I don't think any of my dolls look like me. Dhani might be closest, but only because of his skin color, curly brown hair and green eyes-- not his sculpt at all.

Aside from a few sculpts from the same company or similar wigs, I think my crew is pretty diverse in sculpt, resin color, body types and styles.

    28. It would be a yes and no for me. I like doll with faces I deem pretty and that is a pretty broad term as I see a lot of dolls as being "pretty". I think I mainly prefer big and upturned eyes. I prefer to find dolls in my skin tone but, it can be hard to find tan dolls or any that are darker than your standard tan that don't cost a million dollars. For now, I will settle with pretty light-resin dolls. :)

    29. I don't draw a lot of inspiration from aspects of my looks//personality when creating my characters/dolls. I like for them to be their own multi-dimensional characters, and not just reflections (or variations) of me. There might be some features I share with them, but that's merely coincidental. Variety is the spice of life to me, and to have them all be aspects of me would make them pretty bland in my eye :XD:.

    30. No, since most of the dolls I like are not male and I have a lack of acne!xD Really though even without that I don't think I've ever seem a doll male or female that looks anything like me, but I guess many could look like me if you painted them, as I have fairly fine features like a lot of the more androgynous sculpts...-_- I wouldn't be interested if I did though, I actively hate that idea. I don't despise my looks, but it's not a source of confidence for me... so looking at a mini me all the time would likely kill my mood.

I prefer my dolls to be different and not like me, or even each other anyway. I would like my collection to be fairly varied as I love all sorts of looks.

    31. I don't actively seek dolls that look like me in any way, but I have always had a soft spot for tanned dolls. I guess I unconsciously identify with them because their color is similar to mine.

    32. My boyfriend is doing so, he has this OC roughly based on himself, so he is looking for dolls that match that criteria (tan dolls)

    33. Lol, if I saw a sculpt that looked 52 years old, I'd have to laugh. But I do gravitate to fairies or more mature dolls, except fthat r my imps from mushroom peddler whom I love dearly

      • x 1
    34. None of my dolls look remotely like me. Like above, I'm middle-aged, so that's no surprise, but none of them even resemble what I looked like when I was young.

    35. i actually have seen some mature older styled dolls! something along the lines of a "silver fox" type of styling xD

    36. I don't think any of my dolls have ever looked like me, but I do tend to like dolls that have smaller lips like mine.

    37. nope!

    38. Nope, the only things the dolls I like have in common is the ghostly paleness lol. I tend to look for dolls that are androgynous looking and whimsical which I am not.

      • x 1
    39. Well, I was gonna answer this with a solid "nope," but then I started thinking about it more. I don't tend to go after dolls that heavily resemble me, but I do prefer dolls that have some features similar to mine. I tend to prefer downturned eyes over upturned ones, and I like European looking dolls over other ethnicities if I don't have a specific character in mind. So yeah. I guess I do prefer dolls that at least sortof look like me. :ablink:

    40. No... but if I saw a nose like mine on a mini I'd probably go for it. My sister once ran across a tiny that she thought looked like old baby pictures of me, and I could see the resemblance in a stylized kind of way, but wasn't really drawn to the doll at all...

But, I am an absolute sucker for red wigs, and have contemplated buying and blending together hanks of different reds to make a wig that actually matched my natural color.

    41. No, I never thought about it and is not something that interest me. I do pick dolls I find pretty but for example I like half closed eyes and big rounded eyes, they are different from each other and I like their look just the same. So while I follow my taste they still end different from each other.

    42. Definitely not hahaha. A lot of them have really different aesthetics too, so they don't end up looking similar to each other either. That being said, I do gravitate toward a certain style for the most part - most of the dolls on my wishlist are cute big-eyed Volks girls :XD: But I like a variety of others too.

    43. I don't think my dolls look like me, but I'm not so great at recognizing slight similarity in faces (or I prioritize the wrong things in what I find similar).

I have one doll who's ginger like me, but I think she has much fuller lips, sharper cheekbones, and a more substantial chin. Hers eyes and nose similarly look nothing like mine.

Perhaps my LLT Roderich has finer features like mine, but again, I lack the sculpt's chin (and mine has been modded to have an aquiline nose). The doll with this head is also female, but is dark tan with leucoderma, so unlike me.

So no, I wouldn't say I'm attracted to sculpts that look like me (I'm not sure I'd notice if they did though, until after, so perhaps it's more accurate to say I don't consciously seek them out).

    44. I have never seen a doll that looked like me. If I did I'd probably freak out...

    45. If a company made a doll that looked like me, they'd never sell one!

I do tend to make all my dolls redheads as I am, and I just love red hair. But instead of eyes like my blue gray ones, I give them eyes like I wish I had: green.

My LY will have four wigs in four different colors, but one will be red! it must be some kind of OC deal as I cannot bring myself to get only one wig in a color other than red. Makes me feel ishy, anxious and uncomfortable! Yikes!
      :ablink:

    46. I once found a doll that was hilariously similar to one of my friends, and even shared a similar name... I was suuuuuuuper tempted to buy it, but then I worried it might be weird and decided not to. Otherwise I haven't seen any doll that looked similar to me & I wouldn't want to buy a doll that looked similar to me.

I do seem to have a preference towards dolls with more sleepy/half open eyes and a sharper jawline, hands that have nicely sculpted fingers, pretty bodies. The only dolls I have that look similar are my Sooms ( Dain and Breccia gave me family vibes, I also have a Luts event head that looks like it could be Soom haha)--- and a few of my Dollfie Dreams... My goal is to collect all the Sabers, so the ones I do have... Well they definitely look similar:mwahaha

    47. Not at all, but that is probably for the best.

    48. I don't really think so! There's such a variance in terms of the different dolls that I really like; different eyes shapes, facial features, etc.

    49. No my dolls don't look anything like me especially as most of them either look like cute young children or are in the anime style.

    50. Facial features? Not really, but their hair color ends up looking like mine lol [IMG]

    51. I think I have only ever seen ONE doll that looked even somewhat similar to me. I am NOT the Asian aesthetic dollmakers are going for at all.

    52. I think yes, I like doll that have chubby face like me. >.<

      • x 1
    53. Such a funny question. I had to read all of the responses

I my case no. I have about 8 heads and none of them look anything like me. I also have male and female dolls and the bodies are all in much better physical condition than I am currently.

    54. I have doll characters of all sorts. And I guess in a way they represent my past and my present.

    55. The only thing me and my dolls have in common are Huge eyes but other than that no. All of my dolls are different when it comes to body shape, skin tone, and aesthetic.

    56. Not at all. When I look for a doll, I look to shell a character, usually with very specific features. Pretty sure my own appearance has no effect on the way I see my OCs in my head, they're all really different.
The funny thing though... I might end up with a doll that looks a bit like myself in terms of hair and clothing style. It's a complete coincidence, I think the character got their style first >D But that's nothing to do with the sculpt.

    57. I'm not sure if there is a doll that looks like me. Hehe but to answer your question apparently for the mean time I only browse one specific doll I love the sculpt so much that her story just pop out of my mind.

    58. Well, I can't say that my incoming MK Cris looks a lot like me, or my wishlist dolls. Or, for that matter, any of the dolls I feel drawn toward when browsing.

But, I've recently rediscovered a Tumblr post I made a few years ago, which stated that my dad called Alex 'me in disguise'. I didn't, nor do I, see it; Alex has a feminine face, but he has blue eyes (the ones he came with) and at the minute he has grey hair. When my dad remarked that he was me in disguise, Alex had a brunette wig on.

I didn't buy him, because he looked like me. I didn't see the similarities; I just saw a gorgeous doll that I knew I wanted.

    59. I got a doll that looked like my friend and I showed it to her. She said "hey that looks like me!" and when I asked if I could name it after her she was cool with it :) I think it really depends on the friend - if it was me I'd be a little...not weirded out but kind weirded out and flattered at the same time.

    60. Not really. Thankfully, I have yet to stumble across a doll whose face resembles mine. That'd be kind of unnerving. :p
