Wigs What's your preferred yarn brand for wig wefting?

May 20, 2017

    1. I've done a couple of searches, but it seems like there's a fair amount of disagreement. Some people say the cheaper the better, Red Heart is good, Lion is good; some people say Red Heart is lousy, Lion is lousy.

      What's your opinion, and why?

Thanks very much for any input!

    2. I use Caron Simply Soft 100% Acrylic yarn. It's very soft to the touch compare to Red Heart. This brand come in a lot of colors and is reasonably priced. I like that it stays soft even after I brush out the yarn in to wefts. I make sure to use coupons or wait for sales at the craft stores to stock up.

    3. Thanks! That's actually on sale at my local shop right now... :D

    4. ^ I second Caron Simply Soft. It brushes out softer than any other acrylic yarn I've tried and it's pretty cheap. :) If you're in the US, you can get it at Walmart for around 2 or 3 dollars...and it comes in so many colors. :D The multi-colored varieties make some gorgeous wigs.

The wefts end up about 3" in length once brushed and the strands feel super soft in wig form. ^.^

    5. I use Lion Brand, the 4 strands ones. They're soft and shiny, almost like suri alpaca. I had used both and almost can't tell the difference. You'd have to brush them out good and flat iron them before using them. To be honest, I prefer it over suri alpaca due to the cost and availability plus lots more color options that can be passed off as natural hair colors.

    6. I've worked with three different acrylic yarns for making wefts for brushed yarn wigs, and unfortunately, I lost the wrapper for one of them, so I have no earthly idea what brand my favorite yarn so far is.

The mystery yarn was very soft, and a moderate shedder compared to the others, with a very silky, natural-feeling final product. I may not know what brand it is, but I can tell you about my experience with the others.

Big Twist: This one is GREAT for wigmaking purposes! It's pretty cheap, especially if you can get it on sale, but the regular price is still cheaper than most (I've seen it way overpriced online some places, compared to what you pay for it when you find it in Michael's/JoAnn/etc). It feels a bit stiff/unsoft, but when you brush it out, it's nice and soft. The range of colors is great, especially if you like pastels. Sheds the least of the three I've tried. Very fluffy (cotton candy level floof!) when first brushed out, but a little hit with the flat iron on low makes it nice and silky.

Lion Brand Homespun: I would try any other line from Lion Brand and expect to have a good time, but Homespun is just... not good for making wefts. There are threads you need to separate out that give it its shape, for a start, and it sheds just The Most. Because it's so soft, it really just falls apart like nobody's business once you start trying to work with it. Buuut the color blend I got is just the most natural looking red once you do brush it out, iron it, and get wefts made, so I would say it's worth it to me to do this *one* time. I wouldn't do it a second time, though, I'd look for another yarn with a natural-redhead blend of colors.

    7. Thanks very much for the recommendations! I got some Big Twist and some Caron Simply Soft; I'll be giving (four strand) Lion Brand and Bernat a chance in a couple of weeks, I think.

    8. Hey-all! I've been making yarn wigs for a few years now, and I'm curious what everyone's favorite brands are!

Though I don't get super long fibers, I like Hobby Lobby's Yarn Bee. They have a line that is super shiny, and they also have a line of chunky yarn that is super loose and easy to pull apart. I've managed to make some decent MSD wigs with them.

    9. I've used Lion Heart Heartland yarn before and that works well, but I would say my favorite for sheer softness and volume is the Bernat Softee Chunky! Its so so good and poofy and I adore how soft it is!

    10. Loops & threads chunky luxe- I bought up every color when Michael's clearanced it out. Its basically not twisted at all, so I just pull out super long wefts with no brushing. It can make a wig longer than shoulder length on an SD doll! It is longer but has a similar look to viscose top which was my other preferred fiber, though not quite as kitten-soft, still a nice texture

    11. From the wefts I'm made with several yarns this is what I learned:

Craftsmart - Has many colors but doesn't feel soft or look that good as wefts. Also, no matter what I did, almost all my wefts came out short. I guess this yarn is good if you want to achieve a damaged hair look *shrugs* Worst yarn I've used so far

Loops & Threads Charisma - The wefts are extremely soft and look beautiful. New colors just come out so there's more variety now.

Lion Brand Pound of Love - Had to use a lot of yarn to make one wig, but it works out since pound of yarn is a very large skein. I'd only recommend buying this yarn if you're going to need A LOT of the same color. The wefts feel and look okay.

Lion Brand Hometown - Wefts look and feel excellent. You can make so many wefts with very little yarn.

I made other wefts using discontinued yarn so I won't mention them. But from the ones I've mentioned LB Hometown and L&T Charisma are my fav yarn for making wefts.

    12. If you need a really specific color, go for your Red Hearts, your Big Twist, or your Caron yarns, but honestly, I got tired of the "standard" yarns, and how it takes forever to brush them out for something that doesn't become very soft. I've mostly switched to super soft yarns, or chunky stuff that I can brush out easily and that straighten out nicely. Here's a list of a few:

Red Heart Unforgettable, Lion Heart Landscapes, Lion Heart Hometown (not Homespun), Loops and Threads Facets, Loops and Threads Soft and Shiny, Yarn Bee Soft Secret, Yarn Bee Tender Touch, and Yarn Bee Hue IQ.

    13. May recommend yarn named "Etamin". I know several brands who have it: Yarn Art, Kartopu, Alize, Diva, Vizell. It's my absolute fav for many years and I have all colours of Etamin by Yarn Art - find their quality better than other brands.
The fiber is very soft, silky and shiny. Etamin is a crochet yarn, so a thread looks thin compared to regular knitting acrylic yarn. But it contains impressive amount of yarn per meter, almost the same as in a meter of knitting acrylic yarn.
Average length of the hair I have (including glue line) is 12-14cm.
So if you once will see Etamin - give it a try.
And here's the photo how it looks. It's not a pure colour, I made a blend using 3 different colours of Etamin.

    14. These are so helpful! I've been struggling to find a nice yarn to use because I tried a few really cheap yarns at first and was so dissatisfied that I wanted to give up. Thanks to everyone here :)
