What company has the strongest grip on your wallet? Not necessarily your favourite, or the one you have more of, but is there a company whose dolls you see and immediately have to buy one (or stop yourself from doing so)? For me, even though I think Souldoll might be my favourite in terms of aesthetics, Alchemic Labo's Unoa are always Danger for my wallet. Twice now I've seen one secondhand and almost immediately bought it (first, a Chibi Lilin last year, and recently a B-El). Meanwhile, I already have two Souldolls and am saving up because I have more planned-- but I still had to jump on those Unoas! Anyone else have an experience like that?
I feel like it's probably pretty common but I'd say Switch is my danger company. I already have two heads at home, one on the way, and another pretty closed to wrapping up the sale. I've never successfully bought a doll new from them, but every time a switch doll pops up on the marketplace I can't help but look and then tell myself that no I don't have room for another SD but clearly it has not stopped me. I can't help but wish that I could find more room in my tiny living space so that I could be more reckless with my spending.
oh yeah, I totally have that problem. For the most part I love having a pretty varied collection since while I choose each of my dolls with love, I'm also a collector at heart. As a result, I really prioritize getting dolls from companies I haven't bought from before if I can. That said, I have a serious weakness for fairyland dolls. Every time they drop a new doll, I'm immediately there and trying to decide if I should try to budget to get it and throw off all my dolly plans. Same with dream valley, they just release so many absolutely amazing dolls and I'm endlessly debating with myself if I should spring for their newest release or not.
I'm in a weird place with my collection habits right now but if I had to pick one: Fairyland. Which is *super* annoying because I actually don't *want* to like FL, most of my collection is FL and I want to expand into other doll companies but ... ugh. But dang it I *have* to look at every release. And objectively I don't like a lot of the FL sculpts as my taste has skewed into different styles over the years but here I am... judging each release to see if it's worth changing my plans.
I don't think I have a danger company. I don't get the desire to buy dolls unless I can think of a character for them, and so far, that hasn't really happened to me much coming back to the hobby. Earlier in the hobby, when my financial situation was different and I was more willing to buy dolls without a strong character behind them, I probably would have said Luts or Soom. I still always find myself keeping an eye on Soom releases in the hopes they release something I'd be super into.
I'm really weak for LUTS but I eye Fairyland and Soom SO HARD that my eyes might fall out. When I buy my birthday Celine, I might really find a new Danger Company.
For me, Soom/Luts/Volks. I own a lot of Soom dolls and I always look at their new releases. For Luts and Volks, it's more the clothes/wigs/accessories and SOME dolls. But my collection is also very varied. I like to look at a lot of companies but can talk myself out of a lot of things too.
Dream Valley is definitely my danger company, I'm weak for well made and engineered fantasy parts. Plus their MSDs aren't childish looking but not too mature, which is what I like in aesthetic.
Luts. I love a lot of their sculpts and their faceups and clothes. Plus they were my first resin doll order so they will always have that special place in my heart. Another company I love like everything they do is peaks woods but I don't own any of their dolls lol. I look at their site all the time and just admire
I'm finding my ultimate weakness is probably dream valley or doll chateau because of their monster vibes. also there are a handful of independent artists that do at home casting that im constently eye balling
Thirding Dream Valley. A monstrous half-woman/half-mantis? Here's my paycheck. A corpse mermaid? Have my paycheck. Oh, you made a human body with the mermaid torso? Take my money. I have to unfollow them on Instagram, I swear. Every new release, it's like WANT.
Agreeing with the Dream Valley answers, I've proven my will is seriously strong after only buying one single doll from them last year! And this year is already looking dangerous from their cute new dragon's photos alone... I would say Dearmine too, but to a lesser degree because I've seen the ones I like up for secondhand sale more often, so I know if the itch gets too strong, it won't be that bad to find one, nor as expensive as a DV doll with all the fantasy parts for sure LOL.
many years I was addicted from Soom, I love their fantasy creatures and sculpts, but last 4 years they lost yourselves (for me). Another y weakness it's - Ringdoll, LoongSoul, Dream Valley. Last years I'm all time in l/a on their bjds
白零 WHITE doll might be turning into my danger company. I ordered the 29cm body and I am feeling a temptation for the upcoming 31cm body too even though I haven't received the 29cm one yet.
Ringdoll, all the dolls I own are from them and they are the ones that got me into bjd. I think their dolls are super beautiful (especially their historical ones) so now I am weak and I want almost all the ones they release . It’s safe to say that if I hadn’t found Ringdoll, I would not be into bjds. Don’t get me wrong, I like dolls from other companies, but not enough to own them.
My "Danger Companies" tend to be the ones that offer dolls within a certain price and size range and have face and/or body sculpts that have some variety of features/shapes that I find interesting. Doll Leaves has a variety of face shapes and price point that hit a couple of sweet spots. Resinsoul has some really unique face shapes in a nice variety of colors that I want to hybrid on different bodies. Dream Valley makes such good fantasy dolls that make my inner child happy and they advertise pretty well, so I get reminders that they exist. Soom's cute fantasy faces and fun colors have almost got me twice, like account made and doll in cart almost there... but shipping fees and the extremely limited release schedule just haven't lined up with my budget. Then there's the artist dolls... that are also fantastically creative and come in even more fun shapes, colors, and sizes.
DearMine, definitely. I'm a biologist and science teacher and I love animals in any shape and size, but those tiny anthros really make my day. I have 2 but I would have a little army if they weren't limited and so expensive for my poor self.
At the moment, Impldoll, specifically the female faces they've been releasing over the last year and a half or so. So pretty! I find each new sculpt more tempting than the last, especially given their reasonable price point.
Right now it is SartoriaJ. I bought almost every new release or if I skipped a few I bought several dolls all at once. It used to be Peakswoods, Luts, and Idealian. It seems to fluctuate between these companies right now.
Dream Valley is an impending threat over here- their latest female body up for preorder looks stellar
I used to live in fear of Dollstown releasing a new head sculpt. At one point my wishlist was completely dominated by them and I really had to stop myself from buying one of each. Now, I'm sad but also a bit relieved that Dollstown hasn't released new sculpts for a while. More recently, I was ambushed by Bimong's dolls - they clubbed me over the head and stole my wallet, and I woke up a few days later with a Bimong doll on layaway. Still wondering how I ended up with the fastest and biggest impulse buy I've ever made... but I do know that I really want one of those wonderful bodies, I don't even care about head sculpt or resin skintone at this stage. And I think that if I like one of Bimong's dolls, I'll end up with a second one eventually.
Luts for dolls and Volks for clothing and accessories. It would be Volks for sculpts as well if the prices were a little lower, haha. But Luts sculpts were my first love, their prices are manageable, and they release new things regularly. I've managed to get all my wishlist sculpts, so I think I'm mostly safe for the time being... (I say, having put in an $800 order last night).
Oh, Peakswoods has a murderous grip on me at the moment. I like dolls from other companies here and there but PW is the one I want the most from. I have a Dotty Muse and a vampire Red head at home now and I sense about two more dolls from them in my future, lmao.
I'm not in the market for a new doll or new clothes right now, excluding dream pieces, but MYou Doll keeps releasing MSD girls with beautiful outfits. I've been eyeing their maid outfit for months, and they just released a new girl with a gothic chained angel sort of dress. It's absolutely gorgeous but I can't justify it right now. So yeah, MYou is both my favourite and my most dangerous company.
Switch ... those faces! ... but I'm keeping a tight grip on my wallet as my money is needed elsewhere at the moment!
I’ve been collecting slowly but continuously since 2006…right up until this year. I’ve vowed that I’m finally going to stop in 2023, except for any possible super-tiny Fairyland Realpuki releases which come along very seldom. They’re the only thing I still have room for and the only thing left on my wishlist. But…the company I’m most in fear of derailing my good intentions is Luts. I swear they’re my kryptonite. They make so many ranges of size and style, and their aesthetic is so my jam. I have dolls from multiple companies…but Luts is a big percentage of those. It just always seems that whatever I’m looking for in shelling a specific character, Luts will have excellent options, plus wonderful clothing, wigs and eyes to add to my order.
Right now my danger company is Loongsoul. Definitely my kind of aesthetic -- I have three at home and two more on the way. It's the only company that has convinced me to get fullsets as well.
My danger company, since early in the hobby, is Soom. I absolutely love their aesthetic particularly with Idealians and Super Gems. The price of them and lack of having a developed character are enough to stop me from buying impulsively, but every time they put out a new doll I always think they're so beautiful and tempting
For the past couple of years, my "danger company" wasn't a specific dollmaker, but a doll store, namely Denver Doll Emporium. I'd periodically browse their "in stock" BJDs, and wound up with an unexpected collection of tinies. (Hey, they're small was part of my reasoning. That, and pandemic retail therapy. )
Huajing… I love my three so much. I have ordered both the new ones released since I got them, and will probably keep doing so; unless they radically change.
so true!!! that dragon baby is just too too cute , I'm just trying to make my goal for the year to only get bodies for floating heads if I can.
Volks... 112% always Volks. Every time I say "no more" they seem to do something that I really, really love. A new sculpt. A particularly spiffy One Off. It's always something.
There’s Phoenix Mystery, which only the wait (and swearing off SDs) keeps me from committing. But if some dealer got an in stock doll… I don’t know what would happen to my wallet
My danger company has to be soom I generally like the sculpts they offer I rarely have one I dislike or straight up hate.
Dream Valley. I have a thing for weird centaur/animal dolls and that's most of what they make. I only own two of their dolls right now, but if I were rich I'd probably have them all. Secondhand it's Angel Region (pre-Soom). I have to slap my hands away from buying every one I see on ebay.
Loongsoul and Ringdoll (though mostly Loongsoul. I like Ringdoll's dolls, but wish they'd release more in some of the other sizes again, instead of just the 75cm like all their more recent releases :/). The face sculpts are lovely and I really like the styling, even if the only fullsets I have are for licensed dolls. I love that Loongsoul has been releasing a variety of dolls in different sizes, and that bunny boy is sorely tempting xD Some of Telesthesia, Charm doll, and DFH dolls are pretty tempting too when I see they have new releases!
DLace I want all the Ex Machinas, their android aesthetic is just divine Also Nabarro They made my grail sculpt and I'm pretty obsessed Also, also Vings Just so super pretty
For years it was Iplehouse...but they are not making so much lately and so now SartoriaJ is who I'm more apt to yearn for. Though, I still love the Iplehouse bodies more aesthetically speaking.
Lati, I love other companies but I have a hard time resisting Lati Yellow. Just when I think I’m safe they have a free shipping, no waiting sale of past event dolls that I missed out on! I never thought I’d fill my display cabinet in the doll room with bjd but Lati did it, it’s not my fault…
I would say Volks... but I am definitely in danger every time I see a low priced secondhand Kinoko Juice girl. Something about them just makes me feel like I want to own any and all of them. I do not feel that danger with every Volks doll luckily because I would be beyond broke.
Dream Valley. My taste in dolls for the last few years has been unusual bodies, especially half human half something else, so... yeah, pretty much every new limited doll I see from them makes me wonder if I could survive forgoing food for the next couple of months... I guess it's kinda fortunate I only really care for >50cm dolls in general, because if I liked the smaller cheaper ones too I'm not so sure I could tell myself no.
Volks has been tormenting my wallet for the last 3 years. Every time a new clothing release drops I have to order a handful, and every time a new DD or SD releases I’m always debating
My wallet gets nervous when both Volks and La Legende de Temps have new releases. I'm also prone to falling for very small makers that have only made a few heads and new companies I've never heard of before. I'm a sucker for surprises.
Oh man! Some companies market so well. Sartoriaj and iplehouse have me in a grip for sure. But fairyland also has an immediate impact on me, I always want it right away but am able to talk myself off the ledge. They did get me a couple times though!
Fairyland has me in their back pocket with minifees/fairyline dolls...and Volks can be tempting too with their sdm line...
SAME I am checking for it to release like every day... The 29cm doll was the first human doll I've ever been taken with and was an instant buy and I am definitely coveting the 31cm one as well. My primary danger company is Dream Valley, I sometimes wish I could stop checking the new releases. I am a sucker for fantasy sculpts and their centaur type giraffe bodies and the dragon series are so hard to not buy all of. Their dolls and faces are just so beautiful. Doll Chateau and Dearmine don't have quite the same hold on me, but I watch them a lot and am pretty susceptible to impulse buys. It's sort of fun to see my top company weaknesses shared by many others in the thread!
