What's your crafts?

Aug 18, 2016

    1. Ive noticed there is a lot of very creative and resourceful people out there on DoA and I was wondering what kind of things people were getting their hands into!
For me I love making plush dolls, bears, animals and sewing. Sculpting is the next step for me!
What kind of artists or crafters are you??

    2. Well I love to work with resin I make charm pieces to use for decoden phone cases
And being able to work with resin I make doll eyes so too
I also am learning to sew

    3. I love sewing cosplay/costumes and make weapons/accessories for BJDs. ^_^

    4. I do a lot of different crafty hobbies:
      • knitting (mostly for me, but I intend to knit for dolls at some point!)
      • cosplay (sewing & props)
      • Special effects makeup
      • I make plushies
      • perler beads (magnets, keychains, jewelry)
      • I make stickers
      • I've dabbled in polymer clay charms, I need more practice though. :P
And then there's things I want to learn to do ...
      • Crochet
      • Cross stitch
      • Book binding (I got through A LOT of notebooks and sketchbooks -- it'd be cool to make my own!)
      • 3D Modeling (a friend of mine has a 3D printer, says I can use it if I supply the material!)
      • LEDs (I'd love some light up accessories for cosplays & ravewear ... :3c )
      • Jewelry design/crafting

    5. @ellie That's really awesome! I'm too scared to work with resin, I really want to learn that so I can make moulds of things I sculpt.

@Cloudsorano Have you made any matching cosplay to your Bjd's? Those weapons must be pretty meticulous to make.

@PumpkinKings Wow you have a lot of hobbies, I've found plushies making has given me many other random skills, I can't knit but I can crochet! I've seen knotted/crochet clothing for dolls but it looks so tedious and intimidating. We have a 3D printer at our local library and I've been trying to learn blender so I can try it.
My s/o makes LED dance equipment for ravers ^^ and I want him to make a light up apparatus I can stick heads. He does a bunch of remote controlled stuff so it would be cool to have clear eyes then different coloured LED modes.

    6. Sewing, knitting, crochet, ribbon and regular embroidery, counted cross stitch, needlepoint, needle felting.
Some day, given time, I'd like to learn to tat and perhaps smock doll clothes......

    7. @MirthMaven
Plushies gave my my start to tons of other skills too!
Years ago my friends and I learned to hand sew together to make the plushies we wanted but never saw at cons -- from there I learned machine sewing and eventually started sewing my own cosplays. I think that background is what got me interested in the costume design major at my college. c:

I've been told by several sources that once you learn either crochet or knitting, it's really hard to learn the other. I honestly think that's true --- I've asked a friend of mine who crochets to teach me and I just cant seem to grasp it. One day Ill figure it out lmao
And knitting things in small scale does get a little tedious (I've made a tiny scarf and hat on a mini loom for a friends' doll before), but so long as you can find some nice tunes or a good show to binge watch, it's pretty much fine. :P

And I would really really love to see a led thing like that!
If you get him to make something, you should definitely post it! That'd be really neat for fantasy dolls. :D

    8. I did some clay sculpting but never turn out well so scrap it

then I got into crochet and found out I am actually ok on this so continue making larger size to smaller size dolls , plushies etc.

Drawing I quit long ago cause I am ok but not the best also with paint.

in the end I don't think I have any really good skill other than crochet LOL

    9. @MirthMaven oh it's really fun don't be scared of it!

    10. I specialize in animal and pet needle felted miniatures :kitty2 Making a kitty for my dolls right now haha! I also cross stitch, sew, crochet, quilt (a little), and paint :3nodding:

    11. I'm an illustrator, so illustrating! Haha. When I'm working traditionally, I love to draw with a variety of mediums, like graphite, prismacolor, pastel, charcoal, and when I'm working digitally, I like to work in lots of texture with gouache/pastel digital brushes. :) I studied character design for animation, so I love to draw cute and interesting characters.

I also like to try my hand in needle felting, sculpting (though I actually need to learn Z-brush for work sometime in the future...), home decor, making cute miniature food, decoupage, etc.

    12. Another great thread, Love to see All you creatieve People in here!
I Make acrylic paintings and drawings with colored pencils; I also Make dollshouses and miniatures (furniture, food, paintings, plants, Trees etc) in 1to12, 1to24, 1to48, 1to144, 1to6, 1to4, 1to3 and 1to2 scale; sculpting dolls with Homemade paperclay; needle felting; knitting and crochet; embroidery; sewing etc.
For My BJD's I try to make everything myself: their faceups, wigs, clothes, shoes and props.

    13. @PumpkinKings If it ends up the way I want it you'll definitely see it around!

@chinadoll Dont stop trying! :whee: My drawing used to be so bad but I just percistently tried and then one day I was like wow, that looks like something. I don't have a style or anything yet, every time I go back I'm just a lil bit better though, my specialty is cat faces. :kitty1

@Raeosunshine4 That really amazing! I do needle felt on my teddy bears but just simple shapes, I have yet to work on a complete needle felt project. Still trying to understand the build up of sculpting, sewing patterns are much easier for me.

@Sheyda nice!! Did you go to school for character design or did you just learn on your own? I've have so many books on everything drawing, one of those people that put in more time studying than doing it.:mwahaha
I recently learned about z brush and it looks so cool! I really wonder if I'd be better on it, I draw more on computer then traditionally.

@Margo that's so inspiring!! I want to get to a point like that with my dolls, know them inside and out just like my teddy bears! You must be quite the handy person to have around :wiggle

    14. @MirthMaven Yup! :) I recently graduated from art school this past May. I majored in illustration and visual development for the animation industry (currently working as a product designer at a company though). Hey - nothing wrong with studying art books a lot! Sometimes the best way to learn is to soak up information like a sponge before you apply the knowledge!

    15. I'm an amateur at everything I do, but they include drawing, sewing doll clothes, making plushies on occasion, constructing cosplay props, and jewelry/metalwork. :)
I used to sculpt more, but moved away from using clay. I much prefer making jewelry these days, using hammered wire and metal to make bracelets and pendants.

    16. Cross stitch is one of my favorite crafts for the pure relaxation factor-- something about it is just really soothing.

(apparently I don't have a good finished pic uploaded to share, but there's a WIP shot of my first project where I drafted the chart myself, simple though it may be)

    17. I embroider using my embroidery machine, which I just upload or create designs in and let it do the work lol.

I'm slowly teaching myself to sew so that I can make clothes for my dolls. I'm about to start on my first outfit for my 18inch Our Generation doll.
I'm also going to teach myself how to make patterns.

The only other craft I do is colouring and special effects make up. And also scrapbooking.

    18. I have over 10 years experience in the ceramic world, I also make my own patterns and designs for my dolls, I also have started doing some beading work on my outfits. I also love creating extremely movie accurate outfits from Disney for example, I also love just creating outfits for my big girl RS ling, shes very demanding and wants a lot of clothes. I also do some sewing I have the basics down just use a sewing machine its so much quicker and easier. I also love making wigs for my dolls, it takes a while but yarn wigs are my favorite. I also love crotchet and knitting, I had to teach myself at the age of 7 since I was a righty while my mom is a lefty who knew how to crotchet.

    19. I know I am late to the game on this post but I just joined DOA :)

Here are some of my regular hobbies:
-Crocheting: I normally have at least 3 projects going. Now that I am comfortable with human size stuff I would love to write my own patterns for dollies.
-Hand Embroider: there is nothing more relaxing than stabbing something thousands of times and getting a beautiful end product!
-Paper crafts: card making, scrapbooking, etc.
-Planner Stickers: I design my own planner stickers and use them in my MAMBI planner. After I finish school I think I am going to have a planner just for craft related activities.
-Polymer Clay: complete novice here, just starting to dabble. My plan is to make accessories for my dolls.
-Woodworking: I make furniture for my dolls (and my Mom's, Aunt's, Grandma's dolls).

Things I would love to learn:
-Knitting: for some reason I can't get comfortable with the two needle thing!
-Painting: I would love to start painting on canvas.
-Gardening: this is more of a necessity, I want to feed my family straight from the garden!

There are too many things I love! I don't have enough hours in the day.

    20. I scrapbook, make cards, and make paper-craft art boxes and shadow boxes. That is my primary craft. I sew, crochet and I know how to embroider but it's not up there. I make other people cosplay costumes often and I like to make plushies when I am in the mood. I can sew doll clothes as well when I am motivated. I can figure out any craft and re-create it. I used to paint with watercolors but I haven't been inspired to in a long time.

    21. I can do everything for my dolls except of face up and shoes. I'd wish to be able to make face- ups by myself but i have no talent for this. I think this skill gives such freedom of creating doll you want. Also i can stitch -cross, satin, cording, etc. This skill helps me now to make different outfits for my dolls.

    22. I actually have a craft business, but there's a strange feeling of calling myself an artist. I can't draw, but I do these crafts:
-sewing (lolita clothing, cosplay and doll clothes)
      -perler beads
      -jewelry
-crochet (but I'm not at the level to make decent doll clothes or anything astounding.)
-painting/refinishing (like furniture or cabinets, might be useful for doll furniture! )
      -gardening (which is creative too)

I really would love to get more into making furniture and props. I am wanting to maybe start a blog or maybe just an instagram for my doll clothes I've been sewing. I feel like I'm really making progress, so that's great too!

Thanks for sharing and I love to see such a creative community! : )

    23. - sewing/tailoring/pattern drafting/draping/fabric pattern designing (using stencils or fabric printing with Photoshop--I wish I had Illustrator) for myself and my dolls. (I'm also sort of getting into shoes.)

      - a fair bit of BJD/other doll/action figure modding/dyeing/kitbashing/hybriding and other mixed-media crafting (I'm really liking my dremel).

      - Dolly wigmaking

      - sculpting (usually dolls, but not BJDs)

      - BJD faceups and painting/airbrush (my only real 2D art besides the sewing/fabric stuff)

      - dyeing (BJDs but also clothes/fabric and other random dyeable things--I really like shibori)

      - embroidery/cross stitch (usually as an accent on clothing)

      - jewelry making (usually with found objects, including soldering)

      - some crochet (I don't remember how to knit)

      - weaving

      - a little whittling, but I'm not great at it

I wish I had the skills to get into 3D printing (I'm not great with complicated design software--I've learned Illustrator and Photoshop by necessity for scientific figures), any type of coding or programming (I fear I may need to use R at some point for non-creative endeavors), woodworking (like for making furniture), knitting (it seems more practical for what I want than crochet), some type of casting/moulding would be cool (lost wax metal casting or with resin--I've done resin jewelry, but that's it), and perhaps lazer cutting or cricut for fabric.

    24. I do a lot of things for dolls like:
      • Faceup
      • Accessories (jewelry etc..)
      • Clothing (Sewing)
      • Wig

I would also like to learn to do this:

      • Dolls sculpting
      • Crochet
      • Knitting

    25. I knit and I make jewelry. I also like to do miscellaneous crafts that don't really fall into any specific category.

      • x 1
    26. I embroider, sew, and make wreaths. I can build and do wood work but haven't since I moved recently all my tools are buried.
I also draw and have recently been painting.

It's fun to see so many creative people on this site. It's nice so many people have overlapping hobbies in the bjd community.

    27. My primary hobby is miniature painting, typically 75 mm or 1/12 ‐ 1/10 busts. I also dip into tabletop sizes as well (1/35). This has definitely been useful for faceups and body blushing - turns out there's a lot of overlap. :)

On the side I knit and sometimes crochet, and recently I've taken up scrapbooking and papercrafts as well. I think I just like stickering things...

Next things I want to learn how to do is jewelry and sewing clothes for my dolls!

    28. I like to do some light sewing and a bit of jewelry making. I don't have a lot of time or space for things so accessorizing is a great way for me to stay crafty.

    29. I crochet, sew, do faceups, and customize Pullip dolls. Not that I've done much of any of that lately but I did just get myself a Dal MIO kit that I'm planning to complete soon. :)

    30. i crochet, draw a d sometimes attempt to sew (attempt being the key word here). Eventually I want to try to do faceups but ill have to wait for the weather to turn.

    31. Sewing; a full set of Lingerie for my Wife, from scratch;

      Plastic Scale Modelling; Anime Mecha, with occasional exceptions;

    32. I enjoy sewing for my dolls. I was a professional seamstress and did theatrical costumes for a living, and I still enjoy that for my dolls, though where I live currently there is not enough room to really do much sewing.
I used to do quilting, cross stitch, embroidery and making cloth dolls.

    33. None right now. I'd really like to try sculpting with clay.
