Floating joints.. thats what they're called right? Like the cup joint that some people put in the hip joints.. What does that do?
It increases mobility, while needing to cut away less of the surrounding limbs for movement. I've also heard them called "shims." I did some little diagrams of how and why this works here: http://denofangels.com/joints/showpost.php?p=17882&postcount=10
Thanks HystericalParoxysm, that helped a bit hehe. I'll also have to just play around and make some to get an even better idea.
Yeah - so much of this stuff is just getting it in your hands to see how it works. You can always add a shim to an existing joint that's the same size as the ball you have already made just to test - I did it on my sculpted clay doll using the ball out of deodorant which made it pretty quick and easy.
