I'd love to hear about what creative or innovative things you've seen in this hobby? It can be a doll's sculpting itself, a mod, a special feature of a doll (for example I've seen a doll with changeable tongues which I thought was quite a unique idea.) A particular face up or wig or outfit, a particular pair of eyes? I'd love to hear about any of your guys favorite creators or creations. if you have pictures I'd love to see. I love seeing what some people do with their dolls, sometimes it's so amazing seeing how much a doll transforms depending on what the owner does with it. Hopefully this makes sense.
The most creative/unique thing I've seen in this hobby are the old people mods I've seen floating around. I think they're beautiful and, honestly, I wouldn't mind an older doll done in a similar way. Older people rock anyways. ;-)
There's someone I follow on Instagram named Culur who is sculpting their own BJD! She's gorgeous, and is gonna get casted! I hope to buy one someday, and I feel that's very impressive that they could do something like thay~
I saw someone modded a BJD to look like Emily from the Corpse Bride. I think that was my favorite since they did all the mod work for the ribs and dyed the doll and it just looked like it would be labor intensive. pretty cool.
Probably not the same one, but my friend has a doll that was modded into Corpse Bride. It looks completely amazing! I'm also really impressed with the engineering of the new Fairyland centaur (and quite please I don't need one, lol) and Raquel Clemente did a full bodyblusing of a set of wings recently that looked like porcelain. Probably the most beautiful blush work I've ever seen!
I once saw pics of a doll torso here on DoA that had been modded to hold a Steampunk heart with lots of tiny little gears. Most awesome thing I've seen, so far, in this hobby.
I remember someone on FB who had a secondhand doll arrive poorly packed enough for the feet to have broken off - so he modded them into Steampunk prosthetics.
When I was new to the hobby (so like 10 years ago) there was a lady who had a small building in her yard, sort of like a shed, but the entire thing was nothing but doll dioramas. It was like a little house and she had so many amazing tiny details with everything in scale. I thought that was the most amazing thing! Now, I have my own doll room full of dioramas, and it's all because I was so inspired by hers.
So far the most creative and original thing I've seen has been Circus Kane's Moon doll. I never would've dreamed of creating a doll with a moon-shaped head. A close second is Angel of Dream's 2014 Christmas head, entitled simply "Skull." I put the Skull head at number two because I actually could envision a doll company attempting a head like that.
I'm personally in awe of the Tony Stark dolls that are out there - the ones where the owners have been brave / inspired / creative / determined enough to cut a hole in the doll's torso in order to put in an arc reactor (that lights up!). Seriously. I just think they're amazing and offer my sincere kudos to those who have done it.
I can't get enough of others doll house and diorama projects! There are so many styles I would love to try to create for different moods and seasons but I have zero space and know-how so for now I just seek and admire... One day I hope to have some of my own!
I'm not sure if she's on here, but I follow her on Instagram @loo.luisa on there, and ALL of her dolls are amazing and super creative. I get so excited when I see her dolls in my feed, they are seriously incredible.
Martha Boers is on DOA, and her outfits and costumes are the best I've ever seen! They are truly awesome! It's a huge WOW factor! I love her eye for details, and her amazing creativity. Her costumes is what every doll would dream to wear
I'm really impressed by creative/innovative jointing systems like Bimong from Narindoll's new extra poseable sculpts. Also I just saw a very unusual doll that the artist cast with multiple resins and glitter swirled into the forehead. That's pretty cool. And there are many interesting non-human dolls out there, again with the innovative jointing systems....I feel like I'm forgetting many examples at the moment, but there is a lot of astonishing creativity out there in the doll hobby.
Pretty much all the BJD sculptors out there. So much energy and passion goes into creating all these beautiful dolls for us all to enjoy. But some honorable mentions would be Akhmel Dolls super unique and amazing designs, CrowBlackJays beautiful dragon sculpt, and PashaPasha's innovative shoulder joint!
@Anne I love Anne Pecaro's stop motion films! I'm lucky enough to know her in person, she's part of my local doll community and we're having a meet on Saturday. She'll be delighted to hear someone loves her films! I'll be sure to tell her!
Sounds basic, lip mods.. saw the cutest doll recently with snake bites and one with the labret. (I used to have it done) - I find them pretty cool!
I saw a doll with a custom wig, made by the owner, that looked like a whole forest floor in bloom, and a matching outfit in several colors of hand-felted wool.
I can't name anything in particular, but DIAROMAS! Oh my goodness, how I love them! They're miniature worlds! I have plans to make some but no real progress - maybe this will be the year!
Diaromas are one of my favourite parts of this hobby! I'm hoping to make one for my SD doll this year. Just gotta find the room in my house lol.
@jabberwocky92 Ooh exciting! Are you planning on a permanent set up or foldable diorama? I really love the idea of a 'storage' diorama where I can display my dolls in character rather than just sitting on a shelf (not that there's anything wrong with that) and then have foldable/collapsable ones for other settings. So like a permanent home display, then other smaller sets like a park, forest, or restaurant sort of thing.
Gonna go with a permanent one so she isn't just sitting on my shelf or in her box. Thinking I might turn a small computer table I have that I'm currently storing toys on top of in to it, or buying a small used desk from an op shop. Many, many things to consider and decide on! Mostly I just need to keep cleaning to get the room I'll need, I never realised how much space SD size dolls take up until I brought one which is why my next doll will be a minifee so I can take her out to do photos and such.
that will be how amazing the faceups and how other doll owners show their creativity through their dolls.
I've been completely impressed with several other Etsy shop owners who create amaaaazing one of a kind outfits for BJDs. "Ospirit" comes to mind first. I love her unique ever-changing flow of design. I respect that. She never does the same outfit twice and isn't mass produced or common. I feel like with the money that I put into my bjds, I'm not going to put them in cheap (or not so cheap) outfits that everyone else has too. The point for me is that I'm able to take and express uniqueness through my dolls. It's an outlet.
I saw photoset with Loki (mnm T.Hiddleston) in a winter forest. It was amazing. Like not doll but alive Loki. All parts of his outfit were brilliant - armour, clothes, even pot with honey. I've been impressed very much.
I'm new to the hobby, and am so glad you mentioned this in this thread...otherwise I might never have known to go look up Puki Trek, too fun!!!
I can't recall who made them, but someone on flickr I think had modded like 2-3 dolls (or they sculpted the dolls themselves? I can't remember) so that their torsos looked liked violins, and one or all of them had amputated legs with stitches still in. It was bizarre the first time I saw them, but they're really fantastically done, and so beautiful. I also have to throw my vote toward several of the ooak dress/outfit makers I see around. I've seen some pretty interesting stuff, especially on Etsy and Pinterest.
I think it's super creative when I see carved dolls, they look so amazing! I am lucky enough to have gotten one from somebody.
Serenade Doll once did a set of BJDs based on the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale "The Nightingale." One of the dolls was the artificial nightingale, and she took human female form - but her torso was constructed like a cage, with a gold bird perched in the middle. I don't know if she was the most creative - that's a tough call - but she was definitely up there! (And I wish that I had gotten her fullset when I had the chance )
I have seen amazing dioramas and props done by owners. One person who does an amazing job with this is a youtuber named "Anandoll" . The things she has pieced together are amazing and she wants to teach others how to make things. I love her!
oh my god, i had never seen her videos before but you are so right when she opened that filing cabinet in her prop collection video and revealed that it ACTUALLY had tiny files in it i squealed out loud! all of her props and dolls have such a cohesive aesthetic too! dioramas and props in general are so inspiring and neat to look at! nomi800's photos are some of my favorites because of her detailed prop sets ^__^
Here's another vote for the Angel Egg dolls! They are so over the top bizarre and gorgeous- I love Enabi's creations too. The costuming and accessories of Enchanted Doll are also amazing to me- I actually never get tired of looking at the costumes and helmets and accessories for her dolls- they floor me every time. I've seen some pretty amazing OOAK customs/costumes by individual owners as well-
