What's the FIRST thing you do after the box opening?

Jan 8, 2012

    1. Well first and foremost if this is a repeat discussion feel free to move/delete/merge or whatever you have to do mods!

We all know that when that very special box comes we squeal, jump for joy or just just rip open the box. Next comes the photos or videos and posting it on DOA or YouTube in the near future. But I was always curious, and I know everyone does something different, but after all the fun and the excitement what do you do next? Your doll is out of its box and all the tearing and ripping of boxes and plastic is done, now what?

Feel free to post or comment and share what YOU do after the box opening!

For me, since my close friends are very supportive, I rave about the doll a little bit to them on Facebook:sweat. Then I kinda just stare at it for a while...

    5. Try out their posing, work on their character and make clothes and photos.
But before I do all that I get out all my other dolls so I can work the new character in better and look how the new one looks with the others. :3

    6. If I haven't got anything specific for said doll (which is... I didn't have his/her looks figured out), I try what I have available: clothes, wig, eyes, shoes... Accessories. Then I try out the posing abilities (though I'll be content enough if they can just sit down and stand up). Face-up comes next, and then in the meanwhile I start shopping lol.

    7. I usually spend a few moments admiring the little details that are put into the sculpt... posability, fingers, toes, legs, ect. Then I'll put on wigs, eyes, and clothes. Finally, I start snapping some photos!

    9. I go over the entire doll for damage right after I open the box. Then, I check how well it poses. After that, depending on how busy I am, I will wash then seal the doll, or I'll just dress him to see how he looks and do all the work much later.

    12. I hide the boxes. >_> If I have the time, I would usually get to work on the faceup. If it came with one, I'd be trying on eyes and wigs to see what works and what doesn't. Plans tend not to work out. 8'D

    13. Turn off camera. Reset up area where I captured the moment. I won't take videos in a messy room or on a table with other stuff laying around. So I'll just reset it back to the way it was.

Then throw away wrappers, papers, what not. I like to keep it clean and tidy.

Detail check over. Make sure there aren't any cracks, bubbles, or any other issues. Then I can start playing and taking pics.

    14. Usually, I restring the doll first. It's my way of getting to know the doll and become comfortable with handling it.

    15. There's a lot of touching, holding and mindless toting about involved. Seriously new doll family members, even if they're just heads, go wherever I go(in my house I mean)-if i'm watching T.V. or playing a video game they are too. If I'm on the computer they're sitting on the desk checking my twitter feed with me.
      It's how I bond~

    16. Usually dressing and putting on of wigs are involved if they came with them and if I have clothes for them, which I usually do. Then they'll sit with me on the sofa for a while, maybe take some pictures.

    17. I still haven't got my first bjd BUT I'm sure I'll first look at it, "study" everything in him, and then I'll try posing him [yeah, even before giving him clothes, eyes or even a wig, haha].

    18. Check for damage, take everything out of the box and play with the doll a bit to see how well it poses and how it will look with my various other dolls. Later, I paint (if necessary), put in eyes, play with wigs and clothes. I don't usually post box opening photos unless I happen to be the first person on DOA to receive a certain doll, or if people interested in it in the waiting threads, or the specific doll threads, ask to see it.

    20. Usually my box opening includes dressing, changing wigs and eyes and stuff, so after that, I usually either A) take a few photos, or B) edit and post my box opening video/photos to Youtube and DoA.

    21. First things first-check for damage. I really quite like this since even though it's a practical process, it really let's me look over every detail of the doll up close and see the unique aspects of it. After that however, if I have it (which I should if everything goes according to plan), is give the doll his wig. The proper wig (or as close as I can come at the time being) is probably the most important thing for me when viewing the doll as looking correct for his character or not, as I'm perfectly content with putting off clothes, eyes or a face-up until I'm later able to accumulate those things. If the wig doesn't look as imagined I'm on an instant hunt to find something that does work else it can be extremely off putting in the initial bonding process.

    24. If it's a body I'm not familiar with, I run through a bunch of poses. Then I try all the wigs I have, because that's really fun. And then I dress the doll in something (even if it's just a scarf) because leaving my dolls nekkid makes me feel sort of guilty. And then I post some pictures for everyone to goggle at :)

      2. Check for damage. If there's any damage I immediately take photos and contact the company.
      3. Squee some more!
      4. Admire all the details in the sculpt.
      5. Check out the posability.
      6. Even more squee!
      7. Bath time. I disassemble the entire doll and rinse it under warm water. Then I let it dry overnight.
      8. Reassemble and add eyes/hair/clothing. Start deciding on how I want it to be painted.
      9. SQUEEEEE!

    29. During my box opening I typically inspect/wig/eye/clothe my new doll. I almost always do box opening photos and make a box opening thread because I find them incredibly useful to check myself when doing research on a doll and I like to contribute back to this part of the community :)

Once the first round of box opening photos are done I typically clean up all the packing material and set my new girl up on the shelf with the other dolls. If it's daytime I like to select a doll from my collection that could serve as a companion and take photos of them together. This is also when I do comparison photos between dolls of similar sizes, oftentimes up against a plan background and holding similar poses.

This process helps me decide what dolly social-circle the new addition will run if (if I hadn't already planned for her in advance.) Sometimes certain dolls just don't get along or look right together, but unexpectedly look fantastic with a different group. Finding my new dolls' place within my entire collection is very important to me.

If the doll doesn't look good with anyone else I have a hard time bonding with them and they usually get rehomed (this happened to me with a Feeple65 Chloe, whom I wrongly assumed would look great with my Soom Super Gems and my Souldoll Zenith girls.)

Other times I realize that my new doll might need a companion that matches her better so I make plans to purchase a playmate :) (This happened to me with my Luts/MNF elf Ani, who I thought would look good with my Rosettes, but it turns out I need to buy a MNF Shushu elf for her to play with.)

    31. Breathe a sigh of relief that they've arrived in one piece! I'm seriously paranoid about dolls ariving with fingers broken off or cracks in their resin. I've seen my mailman in action and it worries me ;)

I mostly just stare at them afterwards, might try on an outfit or wig if I have one ready for them.

    35. Damage check as soon as I open it, then after I take the usual "omg look, blank naked doll" pics, I'll start in on the faceup. Check that with the wig and eyes. After that, mess around with the body, look at the joints and inside ('cause I'm a nerd like that), try some poses. If I'm not busy, I'll take measurements for sewing.

    36. I always leave them nude for a bit, if they are undressed, to get the full feeling for the doll. I usually try different wigs for character thoughts. I also take some pictures so I can view them through the camera. Then I pick an outfit, wig and maybe eyes and a little back story. Then the name. Sometimes it takes me awhile to name them!

    37. FACEUP!

I can't bond or play or take pix or ANYTHING without a face! I picked up Erik at the PO on my way to work...was really bored at work so opened him there....and about went crazy that I couldn't do his faceup immediately and he was sitting on my desk faceless. I think I may wait til I'm home from now on...

After that, I'll dress them, put wig on and eyes in...then take more pix!

    38. When I got the boy's head, I just put his wig and eyes on and admired him, touched the resin, talked to him and photographed him. A couple of days later I got the body, put the head and clothes on, took some pictures all the time, posted them on the Finnish forum and spent some time on my (new) computer with my new Johnny beside me, before going over to my girlfriend and showing off my new son.

During the next three days and nights, I took something like 1000 pictures. I guess Johnny's happy he didn't have to sleep in my bed!

Both of my dolls have/had face-up ready, I can't do that myself ;)

    40. When the box arrives, I am just crazy. Then the doll will be carefully unwrapped (which take a lot of time with me xD) and examined for damage. Just checked if everything here is how the wig, clothes, ect.

Mostly I will then study the face-up, which is always so beautiful.

    41. I introduce them to the rest of my family and give them a tour of the house and tell them where they are so they can be welcomed here ^_^. I'll play them a song or even sing to them to make sure they certainly do get a warm welcome and to show I love them very much. Call me weird all you want >_>;; it's what I do ^///^. Sometimes I might even read a book to them, watch a show, or play awesome video games with them so they can kind of see what kind of owner I am and hope they like me as much as I like them.

    49. Directly after all the box opening stuff which includes photos, eyes/wigs experiments, dressing... It is SNUGGLE TIEMZ~! I just sit and happy cuddle them for a while, playing with them and huggling them until I'm pretty sure the characters could happily kick me in the grey matter. XD But it's all the happy coming out that they're finally there, and that I can play with them now that makes me just sit and snuggle them for a while. Then they get posed in the doll space where I keep them when I'm not playing with them so nothing gets broken or damaged.
