I'll echo others here and say the head is the most important to me. Of course, bodies are important to, but it's the head sculpt I notice the most. Plus like others said, bodies can always be changed.
The head, mostly because it's the only way I can have some very expensive dolls. I hybrid a lot. Bodies I'm more particular about proportion and suitability to the character than anything else. Sometimes I hybrid because of that and sometimes because I have an expensive head that I want a less expensive body for.
I'd have to say the head, it's the most expressive and most visible portion of the doll, as the body will be covered in clothes most of the time. You can just do a lot more with it.
Both are important, but I've found that bodies are really make-or-break for me. I guess it's a little silly because the body can be so easily hidden with clothes, but it's super important to me. Maybe it's because I'm a little too nervous about resin matching for hybrids right now, plus I find you can change the vibe of a sculpt pretty drastically with eyes and wigs and how the face is painted, but yeah I really REALLY care about the bodies lol
Hmm... That's a hard question. I would have to say "both." You need a sturdy body that looks the way you want and has good mobility, but the head is also important because, at least for me, that tends to be what I fall in love with when it comes to dolls. But if the body doesn't have good articulation, then it's a no-go for me.
For me it’s both, because most of my characters have a certain background story. And also I feel like the body shape and posablity matters. And how the joints look when posing too. Although I’m picky so haha.
I'm super set on what head im going to get but id be happy with any of a few different bodies that all look vaguely similar.
I think the head is probably the most important, it’s what I think most look at first and it sets the tone for who your doll is. But I know personally the body can make or break a doll for me. If it’s the wrong body type or if there’s sculpting details I don’t like (personally not a fan of too many details or the way some joints look) it can turn me off of a doll. In the same way tho there have been bodies that make me want to buy a doll because I love the proportions or the way a certain part looks. Let’s just say I was in awe the first time I saw a hybrid. I hadn’t even considered taking a he’d you liked and putting it on the body you wanted. Amazing!
Head is most important to me! I don’t feel haunted by an expressive body sculpt the way I do by an expressive face.
I think head is more important to me as I pay more attention to the head but I can't really say the body is not important either...
Few months ago, head is more important to me. But nowadays I think both of them are important. Some of clothes fit with certain body, so I’m gonna buy them soon.
Personally, I think the head is important the most and body comes second. For me I just have to have the exact facial features I want.
I would say both personally. Though I probably lean more towards the face. How do you say no to a pretty face?
Both, when it comes to the body I want them to be able to easily sit on their knees. It is why I love Doll Leaves.
For me it’s both, but if I purchase a sculpt that I’ve been wanting to buy for a long time without being able to purchase the body for it at first, I would be fine with that.
The head is the most important to me since it's pretty much the main part of the doll that you see and where the main character of the doll comes from, but the body is also important since the way the body looks and how it poses adds a lot to the doll's character. A good body can enhance the features of the head, but the head will always come first.
Head. The bodies don't change very often. Heads are mostly one shots and then pray they show up on secondary market.
Undoubtedly both for me ! I don't have a doll yet, but bjd for me is a way to give a little bit of tangeability / real life to a pre-existing character, either from a fandom or an OC of mine - my plans are 100% shelling plans. So the body needs to fit the character as well, as the head, it's an important part of them. In addition, I'm not face blind, but it takes me time to "learn" the face of people i don't see everyday, and in the meantime the body type/silhouette is one thing that help me recognise people, like "this is not X because this person is very lean, i remember X is stout" ; i think it would bleed into how i would interact with the doll if they had a different body than what i see them having in my mind / in the source material ('who are you.') Beyond that i love realism and alas it makes me super picky as well for the body, in terms of sculpting and engineering. Having a cool / pretty face on top of a simple / interchangeable / not as-realistic-as-the-face body would feel a bit like having the face of the Mona Lisa with a body drawn in stick figure.
both are important but for me the head is most important because that's like the character's face which informs the personality for me...i have many floating heads in need of bodies but that's ok with me, better than bodies in need of heads lol
Definitely head for me.. I find that there is not enough variation amongst the bodies I like for me to be too picky, especially because im always on the hunt for keeping things on a tighter budget. But the head sculpt is what makes a character..!! So it's the most important for shelling out.
I think the head is probably the most important, but it could be both for me too. If the resin color is a fantasy color it would probably be more difficult to find a body. There's always an option to make it work, but I think I'm going to go with the head as the most important.
The body is what I am definitely more focused on. I feel like the right face-up can completely transform a doll's face, but the body has to be right from the get-go.
Body is more important to me. These days I don't keep a wishlist of doll heads anymore, but I do have a very detailed wishlist of doll bodies filled with notes about what I do/don't like. I play regularly with my dolls and do lots of photoshoots with them, so I need to enjoy the process of playing and handling, and the body contributes entirely to that. I recently had a chance to handle a doll body that had subpar joint engineering - manipulating the limbs was a pain in the ass, and the joint appearance looked very unattractive. I was shocked at how turned off I was, it actually made me not want to play or take photos of my doll. (I sold that body very quickly.) I also have pretty specific tastes for aesthetics, I've completely rejected a potential body because it had a silhouette, build, or joint design I didn't find attractive. Look, head will always be important - I have no reason to buy a new doll unless I'm in love with the head. But once I fall in love with a head on sale (whether it's a full doll or a head I need to hybrid), I'm very fussy about its body.
It's definitely both. I'm trying to shell my characters, so certain facial features and body types are equally important to each other. Plus, it's very important to me that a body is well engineered, since I have one body that is so insanely annoying to pose it's become a priority.
Both When I think of my dolls, I honestly have two whose bodies I love a little more than their heads (2 dolls). Then, there are some that I love the heads more (1 doll) . Then, there are some where both the head and the body are equally important to me (the remaining 4 dolls)
Before I would say heads, cuz I don’t have that much budget to spend on dolls, and heads is the one that attracts me more as they give them different characters. Also it might be because the doll’s aesthetic trend over the past few years is my vibe Plus the bodies over the past years aren’t that mascullar (There’s few exceptions where I was attracted by the body first like dollshe) These two years I am very happy there’s more and more types of body to choose from, and I got dad70 and dad75 even before I know what head could go with it. (Hopefully they could match up with those heads that don’t have a body for them) Overall, generally speaking I am still more into heads with few exceptions
Generally, I look at the head first to decide if I want to consider getting the doll, and then I look at the body as the next deciding factor. I have what I enjoy in a head, and I want to fall in love with a face before I get a doll. If the face doesn't get me, I'm not considering the doll, and that's that. So, in that way, I could say I find the head more important. However, the body definitely does affect my enjoyment of a doll, and some can disqualify a doll, like certain fantasy bodies. Is it a body I can easily dress in a variety of things? Do the joints suit my preferences? (I vastly prefer double joints and have only unintentionally ended up with dolls who have single jointed limbs. I also like a two- or three-part torso. However, I'm picky about some joints, like those extra shoulder joints on some bodies so they can shrug. I don't like those!) Do I like the shape? For fantasy dolls, do I like the design of the fantasy elements? There's some things I'm not picky with. Hands and feet, meh. With the dolls I have, sturdy joints that can hold a pose without extra help is a fun bonus; I have two of a body I consider to be one of my worst posers. There are some bodies I would like to have, but that means getting a head to go with them, and I'm not in the habit of getting floating heads. So, overall, face is the overall deciding factor on whether I consider a doll at all, but the body can disqualify a doll I was otherwise considering.
I think that both matter, the head sculpt of course you will see the most, but the body has to suit the head, a doll is not just a head or body, but the full package of head - body - eyes - wig - clothing how they look individually is always relative to one another. I have definitely passed on a head I loved if I couldn't get it without a body I disliked, and the other way around as well.
I focus on the head sculpt. I don't think I've ever cared much for the body sculpt, unless I thought it was really out of place for the doll's intended character; only then do I look for a more fitting body.
I used to be more interested in head sculpts and I’d often buy floating heads just because I liked the head sculpt. I really wasn’t that interested in body sculpts… I don’t know what changed exactly but now I seem to focus a little more on body scultps and have even bought bodies because I liked the sculpt but not had a specific doll in mind
It really depends on the character and two factors: 1. how clearly I’ve visualized their appearance 2. how rare or common their “look” is in the BJD market so for example I have an OC who is a thin young woman with very anime-like features, so I had tons of options for shelling her vs. another OC who has a similar face but a chubbier build. For the latter it was more important to find the perfect body than the perfect head because I knew it would be easier to find a head. Hopefully this makes sense?
The body is just as important as the head for me. There are some dolls whose faces I loved but lost interest in because I didn’t like the body and others I’ve been drawn to precisely because I like the body, after which I’ve chosen a favourite head from there. I’m not as picky about how well it poses, but I have to like it aesthetically. It’s also important to me that the head and body look good together. I definitely have some dolls with some very different bodies that I all, of course, love a lot, but swapping heads on any of them would look bad. It’s very difficult for me to get into the mindset of hybriding because I don’t really look at heads and bodies as separate things when thinking about getting a doll.
Honestly, they're about on the same level for me, which is probably how I've ended up being so big on hybriding over the years. Ultimately, I buy dolls in order to add specific head sculpts to my collection, but I'm not willing to put up with an unsightly or poorly engineered body for the sake of a pretty head.
They are both important to me, body even more so. I've sold more bodies when making hybrids than let go of heads, so I'm definitely more picky with them at least - the head I can always give a new faceup/wig/eyes to, but augmenting engineering or large-scale sculpting is too much effort so I'd rather swap options to something I like. I don't love the "cloth body" look (great head but tube limbs) and prefer everything in the doll to look/feel equally considered by the sculptor. I want to enjoy my dolls as a whole
Both. I tend to buy mint in box with a preference of full doll with company face-up, eyes, wig, clothing, and shoes. If I am buying from the secondhand market, I tend to want both as well. I still have a floating head still needing a body that I've been holding onto years ago as it was my Grail doll. But! Years later I found a complete version of my Grail doll with original everything so the floating head is a lower priority to complete as I'm pursuing other mint in box or secondhand full dolls.
Head for aesthetics; body for engineering. I'm not one to be bothered by the look of extra joints and such if they assist in poseability, since my dolls are almost never displayed nude or scantily clad. Obviously a beautifully designed body is also great, especially the bits that aren't joints, but it's not the most important visual element to me.
For me, they have to work together. There's a lot of small artists I like who only do heads, so I then have to find bodies for them. I think the "perfect" body is impossible to find – there always seems to be a need to compromise in one way or another, and it's a balancing act as to what's most important. My priorities tend to be as follows: Proportions I like – head to body, hand size to head, head to shoulder width, eye size relative to body, neck size to head. I prefer my dolls to be on the bobble-headed side rather than pin-headed The body has to be able to reliably stand unassisted. If it takes more than a minute to get the body standing, it's not staying with me for very long Joints I like. I'm not a big fan of underbust joints as I don't like the way they look when moved – the human body doesn't bend in the middle of the ribcage and I personally find the look a bit uncanny. I'm a bit fussy about elbow joints, prefer a torso cut at the ribcage/hips, prefer mobility thigh joints and dislike "ratchets" in joints like shoulders No body I've looked into for a potential hybrid meets every single point on the list, so it's the inevitable compromise of what I need vs what the body can do
For me, both. I love a beautiful face that can be photographed easily, and I don't like skinny or "rectangular", poorly sculpted dolls, so for me it is very important that both the face and body are beautiful. For example, here is my Annie. I love pear-shaped bodies, and her face was love at first sight. Of course, faceup, hair, and other accessories can change the base sculpt a bit, but I created this natural look on her, which suits her so well! (She is a 30cm Teacup Marionette Leo by Do Dolls Dream) Plus, I don't care if my dolls are not poseable in every possible way. Annie is posing well tho, but I had other pear-shaped dolls in the past that I got only because I loved the body's "beautiful flow".
