What was the first sculpt you could recognize?

Dec 28, 2013

    1. I've been looking at pictures and reading threads on DoA for a couple of years now, and I've found that I'm beginning to have an easier time recognizing sculpts. It was actually pretty exciting the first time I realized that I could identify a doll just by seeing it in at a picture!

How about you? Does recognizing sculpts come easily to you? Do you think any particular sculpts are more easily recognizable than others?

Also, do you remember the first sculpt that you could recognize in pictures? Was it a doll you owned? For me, I got good at recognizing Resinsoul Mei, because she was my first doll. But I was more excited when I started recognizing dolls I didn't own - the first for me was MNF Shiwoo. When I began to spend a lot of time researching BJDs, Shiwoo was everywhere, so it's not surprising that I got to know his face pretty well. Still, I was pleased when I started being able to identify sculpts in pictures.

I thought the recognizability of sculpts might be an interesting topic. I did a search, but if there's already a topic like this, feel free to move this to it! :D

    2. I always find it difficult to recognize sculpts, especially female ones. The only ones I instantly recognize are the very unique ones, like IoS Jaguar and Infernale or the Breakaway sculpts from Fairyland. I think so many sculpts look so much alike, it makes things difficult, at least for me. Also, adding a face-up can completely alter a sculpt, in my opinion. It still amazes me how certain face-ups make some sculpts unrecognizable, but I like that about this hobby. I'm never very helpful on the "What Sculpt is This" threads, sadly.

    3. I can easily identify minifee Chloe's and Celine's, just because they're so popular ^-^

    4. The first thing I learned was probably Bory dolls. I could spot them from a mile away even if I didn't really like the size.

    5. I'm not great at recognizing sculpts... sometimes I can't even recognize sculpts that I own--if the owner has a custom faceup or other mods! But there are sculpts I do recognize.

My first bjd was a Cerberus Project/Luts Elf El that I got in 2004... Els were everywhere then, and there were not that many bjds around, so he was easy. Same with Lishe, since I got an Elf Lishe as my second bjd. And I missed out on a Shiwoo, so I knew that one, even though I didn't own one.

It was a lot easier to know sculpts way back then, because there were only a few companies and they only had a few sculpts. NOW, I find it almost impossible to know what is what. I still recognize sculpts that interest me, though. Or really unusual sculpts.

    6. Oh, I was terrible at recognizing any sculpts back in the day. Honestly, the first one I could recognize was my first doll - DM Kara Klum. He was pretty much it, the rest of them all looked the same to me. Close after that, definitely B&G Sapphira and a couple Migidoll sculpts, and that's about it for a long time XD
It really took me forever to be able to tell anything apart >.<

    7. I can tell sculpts that I'm interested in, or like more common sculpts for the companies I'm not as fond of. I think I could tell most cp dolls apart even before I got my cp lishe boy (my first doll) because I was looking at so many of them then...on the other hand I cant tell the new luts delfs apart cos I've not been keeping track of them. I can recognize most migi sd sized sculpts for far though...even if they're modded sometimes o.o I'm helpless at recognising many volks sculpt other than the common ones though. Haha. I can't really remeber which was the first sculpt I recognised but it was definitely one of the older cp delf boy sculpts...:>

    8. I can spot sculpts really easily. It's probably just because I look at dolls a lot during the day. I can spot a doll from all the companies I like. Even if it's just the hands/body/other body parts, I can still do it. Sometimes I'm wrong, but I actually surprise myself with how much I know. I have a harder time if the doll in question is modded and also some of the much older Volks sculpts and companies no longer around like Abio Angel. I also tend to be worse at recognizing Chinese dolls. I don't remember the first sculpt I could really recognize, but Iplehouse is, in my opinion, the easiest to recognize. They have their own completely unique look (In my opinion) and I've never not known a doll was an Iplehouse.

    9. Probably a RS/BBB. Like a Mei or Ju. You can't miss Ju with those ears lol. I think it's easier for me to tell a company rather than a sculpt. Like Shawnee said Iplehouse has its own look. I think RS/BBB has its own look too...pronounced noses being one of them. I can't think of any other descriptive factors of another company off the top of my head, but I can usually guess which company it is if it's somewhat well known.

    10. After seeing so many dolls it's almost a second nature to recognize them instantly in photos, I think. I've been involving myself discreetly in the hobby since 2004 so that sort of a long time does it to you. I think the "very first" dolls I was able to recognize were the unoa Lusis and Sist. Lusis was the first doll I ever saw, or can remember consciously seeing and researching about, so it was only natural. After that it should be pretty much anything made by Dream of Doll.

Although I've become quite accustomed to so many different dolls and companies by now, I think I only started being able to recognize Volks sculpts in pictures very recently. Before, most of their sculpts looked almost the same to me; never mind the Dollfie Dreams! It has been easier than I expected though, to be honest. I think if one researches different kinds of dolls often they'll eventually become able to recognize them a lot easier. It's the same reason why so many people can recognize the really popular sculpts like Delf El and Minifee Chloe easily. They see a lot of them very often.

    11. When I started this hobby, almost three years ago, I recognized easily only some Obitsu sculpt, because it was the first company that interested me and I browsed a lot of owner's pictures. Now I find easy to recognize almost all of the Resinsoul, Withdoll and Doll Chateau sculpts, but I think it depends 50% for the "particularity" and 50% for my interest in the company.

    12. I can recognize sculpts quite easily, but there are companies whose sculpts i've never seen before, though they're not unpopular or something. I'm just not interested in them, i didn't see them much, i couldn't tell them apart to save my life, so these ones apparently i don't recognize. Maybe i could tell the company though, idk. At least i think i know more sculpts than i don't know.

As for that particular doll i recognized the first... This was five years ago. I couldn't remember it not for love or money.

    13. I am exactly the same! I remember when I first looked at dolls and had no clue what they were. Now recognising sculpts for me is pretty easy. My first sculpt I recognised was the MNF Chloe well she is is pretty easy to distinguish...
It very ironic that your first doll was a Resin Soul Mei because I'm saving up for her as my first girlie!

    14. Littlefee Ante. Kaye Wiggs dolls all look alike to me, yet as a collective they are easy to regonize.

    15. First sculpt I could easily recognise was definately the old Volks f-28/Chris/Lucas/etc. It was the only one I liked back in the day. I'm also quite familiar with all the old CP Delfs (El, Shiwoo, Chiwoo, Yder, Soony, Miyu and so on), I guess because they dominated the hobby back when I was most active =)

    16. Oh what a funny question! I've never thought about it before. I think the first sculpt I was able to recognize was Dollshe Saint, because of the two people I started following, first thing I did, getting interested in the hobby xD I do tend to recognize (luckily) the sculpts I'm interested in or have on my wishlist, mostly through the feeling of "Gosh what a beautiful sculpt! I want it, what is it? Oh, well no wonder I liked it so much" x)
Dolls I really can't see the difference between are almost every MNF, LTF and pukifee Fairyland sculpts. Though I can see they're from Fairyland, I can't distinguish what mold they are. Except for Ante and Mirwen, since those are the ones I like. I can also tell the differences between different EID men from Iplehouse, probably because they're so handsome :'3

    17. Zeodyte, I totally agree that the same sculpt with different faceups can look completely different! That really is one of the coolest things about this hobby :)

senbonzakura1000, I think you'll like RS Mei :) She's so pretty and versatile! We have two of her at my house (one belongs to my wife) and they hardly resemble each other at all because of the way we've styled them and their faceups.

I agree that it's easier to identify sculpts by company than by specific sculpt. I also get really excited when I can look at a picture and say "That looks like a Kid Delf!" even if I can't tell which one it is :) Volks is one of the hardest for me to recognize in terms of
companies I see all the time.

    18. I'm personally pretty terrible at recognizing sculpts! :sweat I can get the really unusual/distinctive ones, where they have odd ears/open mouths/other particularly unique features, but I'm awful with other ones. I'm bad enough that I pulled the faceplates from my three newest dolls and promptly mixed them up... and spent five minutes trying to work out who was who before finally realizing they had their names etched on the inside of the plates! (Luckily, I'd actually gotten it right... after five minutes of comparing them and looking at the pictures on the company site.)

Every once in a while I get one, and I'm pleased with myself, but I'll probably never be a bit of help in the "what doll is this" threads.

    19. For me it has to be IslandDoll Amy and ResinSoul Mei. Both of which I own though, so not really the best person to ask "what's this sculpt?".

    20. Without a doubt, DOD E-An and Dollzone Stramonium.

...on top of pretty much all of Fairyland's collection.

    21. Dollstown Soph A... one of the first BJDs I fell in love with, and a very distinctive sculpt. I can't immediately name every head from Dollstown, but I can definitely always tell it's a Dollstown head.

I'm also great at recognizing Luts' SD-sized Dark Elf Soo and Lishe, because they were everywhere in 2007-2008, when I started getting into the hobby :)

I'm pretty good at identifying SD/MSD sculpts, and can usually tell what company a doll is from, even if I can't put a name to the head. I find that Circus Kane, Iplehouse, Doll Chateau, and the aforementioned Dollstown are the easiest for me to ID, as is Resinsoul, with their distinctive strong noses. However, I cannot tell Volks dolls apart to save my life--they pretty much all look the same to me, except the 65cm ones. I also get kind of confused with a lot of 28cm dolls and I really can't tell anthros apart, like Pipos, Dearmine, etc--probably because I don't collect them at all.

    22. There is one sculpt that I always recognize in pictures, and it's the first one I learned to recognize. It's the sculpt of my first doll, a Bobobie Apollo. I see pics of them everywhere, and I go "That's an Angelo (my Apollo is named Angelo)!" I could probably recognize a Bobobie Ophelia, but she is easy to confuse with a Bobobie Rachael, who is pretty much the same with just a slight smile. I also recognize Dollzone Foxes. I have one of those, and the sculpt is very distinct. I also recognize Fairyland PongPongs with those open mouth grins; they are also very distinctive. That's pretty much it. I'm very fond of Bobobie/Resinsoul (seeing as 3/5 of my dolls are from them), so other companies don't really get my attention as much. The PongPongs are everywhere and they're really cute, so that's why I know them.

    23. I think the first sculpt that I could recognize was the MNF Miyu. I wanted her soooo much that I spent many hours looking at her face ! :)

    24. Probably Volks F-01, Charlotte, and Liselotte were the first ones I could recognize.

    25. The first dolls I recognized immediately were the old CP Shiwoo and Chiwoo, since the original CP Delfs were so popular when I joined the hobby. I'm not the greatest at identifying sculpts usually though. I find it easier to identify the company, especially since faceups can play up features that the default photos hide.

    26. Soom Dia - can recognize her/him a mile away
DollClans Vezeto - coz of his nose
Dollshe sculpts - coz they stand out
Iplehouse EID men - easy to spot coz I love them
      Soom Hyperon...coz I have one
Soom ID and MG men...I just know they're Soom...but not which sculpt coz they all look alike

    27. I can recognize most CP Delfs like El, Shiwoo, Breakaway, etc. I'm also good at identifying Volks dolls as long as they aren't heavily modded. I usually have a hard time with newly released dolls tho since I don't keep up with new releases as much as I used to so I'm unfamiliar with a lot of them. :<

    28. For me, the first dolls I could recognize were DoD's Homme Ducan and Luts' Super Delf Mia... These were the two I most obsessed over and I scoured the internet for every picture I could find of the two so I found it easier to recognize them (as long as there isn't extreme modding done!) =)

    29. I'm not exactly sure which was the first BJD that I recognized simply from a photo, it was probably VOLKS Chii because she's so easy to recognize

I think I've gotten better over the years but I'm still not so great (I have that "that's a *insert BJD company/sculpt name here*?" moment all the time)

    30. Oh, I'm terrible at telling dolls apart, mostly because I just go looking for a very specific sort of thing when I'm doll shopping. (I usually have a character in mind for my hunt and if I don't see the features I want I just move on without a second glance.) Some SOOM dolls I can tell apart but usually only because I either want one or I'm a fan of a particular doll of that sculpt But this is also kinda restricted to the bigger dolls, SOOM mini gems and tiny gems all look really similar to me...

    31. When I first started out looking into BJDs I was absolutely terrible at recognizing sculpts! I felt super accomplished when one day I realized the doll that I was looking at in a picture was a MNF Chloe XD Now that I've been looking at pictures so much I recognize a lot of them, but it's funny to think about when I didn't :)

    32. Fairyland Pukifee Ante because that was the first doll I was interested in when I joined the hobby. I can easily identify minifee and littlefee now as that's what I own/am interested in, I'm not so good with the newer pukifee sculpts. I'm terrible at identifying anything outside of Fairyland - I can distinguish some Iplehouse, Doll Chateau and a few Luts dolls (mostly Delf) but that's it.

    33. Definitely MNF Chloe because she is so popular. Also I can now recognize pretty much any Bluefairy TF sculpt simply because I spent weeks agonizing over my choice when it came to buying my first doll. So many hours were spent staring at the BF website haha :sweat

    34. The first sculpts I remember being able to recognize are the Fairyland Clhole and the Soom Dia. And I think recognizing sculpts is coming pretty easy to me, and sometimes I go through pictures and play a guessing game with myself ^-^. I actually have a hard time recognizing sculpts I own especially Doll-Chateau Colin, unless he has the company faceup.

    35. The first sculpts I could recognize were Soom Amber and Heliot, and a Dollshe Saint, because those were my favorites. Now, I can identify quite a few different sculpts, especially SDs, and if not I can usually identify the company that makes the doll. Some of the older sculpts I have trouble recognizing, especially the companies that no longer exist. I kind of miss the days when every sculpt was new and exciting because I'd never seen it before!

    36. The first sculpt I could recognize instantly was Delf Soony, closely followed by DoD Shall. Now I can recognize most sculpts, and if not the sculpt, at least the company. Except a lot of the Volks ones- they have so many FCS molds i've never seen!

    37. I'm pretty terrible at telling a doll apart in general unless it is an animal doll or a smiling doll. (No offence meant to this hobby, of course, but it's really easy to pick out the Supia Hamins, Doll In Mind Misos, and Angel of Dream Hui Xiangs just because such few dolls smile in general.)

    38. Dollshe Saint was probably the first. I wanted one immediately too.

    39. Fairyland feeple 65 chloe and minifee chloe - one of the first dolls I laid eyes on.

    40. The first one I recognised would be Elfdoll Soah as she was my first resin BJD. I have seen several others and it is still one of the only ones I could recognise with any certainty

    41. That's easy!

It's was Volks SD Four Sisters. It was the only ABJD sculpt the time. The first "mini" was a Volks Ian. The first non-Volks sculpt, Unoss.

    42. Soom Dia, I think.

I remember that when I was new in BJDs (like, a whole two years ago), I had the greatest trouble recognising sculpts - not just because I was new, but because I found it hard to make abstraction of the face-up. In the meantime I have surprised myself by becoming quite good at recognising sculpts.

    43. Lately I've been pretty much obsessed with MNF Chloe and I can recognise her in a heartbeat... (Although she's not really that hard to spot, right?) I can also spot Bluefairies, but not the particular sculpts. I also think Ringdoll is easy to recognise.

    44. I think the more photos/images you see the more familiar you become with sculpts. When I got my first bjd there were at most 3 companies and it was much easier to identify a doll whereas now with 100+ companies it is a bit more difficult unless you are constantly being exposed to images. (Especially since many of the sculpts from even different companies have very similar faces.)

It would be just like someone able to determine whether or not a particular painting was by a master or his student-- constant exposure can make the difference. I personally am not as exposed so if someone mentions a particular sculpt I may or may not know what it looks like unless I have had constant exposure to that particular artist's work. So the more you immerse yourself in the images of dolls the better adept you will become at determining what the sculpt is.

    45. I think it was MNF Chloe, and maybe one of the Unoas. But that's it. I still have a little difficulty trying to recognize some sculpts, but Chloe is the easiest for me.

    46. The very first sculpts I could recognize were Iplehouse Soo-Ri and Elfdoll Red, because of some intensive decision-making going on in the background :). I also learned the DZ minis and the big boy Yuu, the Dollshe boys, and Souldoll minis like Harang early on, as well as Volks Yukinojo (although it has taken me YEARS to learn the girls!). I also knew the DoC minis and Luts (Shiwoo, El, Dark Elf Soo) pretty solidly.

There weren't all that many companies at the time, so it was fairly easy. Now? I'm lost half the time; take a year or so mostly off and the world goes splodey in your face! I don't even recognize half of the *companies,* much less the individual sculpts. Soooo much eye candy! :)

    47. I think the first doll I was able to recognize after seeing several times was Elfdoll Soah. Some dolls are easier to recognize and identify than others. I am not sure if this is because I see more photos of some of the more popular dolls or if its because they have a unique sculpt.

    48. I don't remember exactly, but I believe Sabik was the first one I could differentiate immediately, since I owned him. I recognize dolls as belonging to certain companies much better than I recognize the individual dolls themselves. Some companies I have trouble differentiating between what mold is what. I have trouble with a lot of Volks and Fairyland dolls, especially the girls. I lot of them just look the same to me! XD

    49. Migidoll Ryu. It was the first doll I really wanted, I could recognise him straight away. Nowadays I actually find it harder to recognise him because Migi now has a number of sculpts that look very similar. I sometimes get them mixed up, oops xD

    50. The Migidoll Ryu sculpt, as soooo many people have one and a lot of the people I watch on DA have one or had one.

    51. I find it really easy to identify pretty much any Fairyland sculpt by now, simply because that's the company that introduced me to the hobby and it's the one I'm most interested in buying from. The first sculpt I was able to recognize was the Minifee Chloe because I just fell in love with her. A girl online had just the most gorgeous one and it made me want her so badly (and yet I still have yet to get her >_>). I can also usually recognize the Bluefairy Olive and Migidoll's Jina and Cho.

    52. This is an interesting question! To be honest the first sculpt that I recognized was the Iplehouse Asa and the Fairyland Feeple65 Roke when I first joined the hobby but now I can recognize pretty much all the FL dolls along with most Bluefairy TF, BF and SF but not the PFs. And the longer I'm in this hobby I begin to recognize more of them.

    53. The first sculpt I recognized was a Fairyland Lishe. That was back when I was looking at only human dolls. Now I can recognize quite a few, but I still have trouble with everything Volks unless they are a Four Sister's sculpt or a Liselotte.

    54. Volks SD Nono, her eyes were my first love <3. After that I started recognizing Unoa Lusis pretty fast, and from then on I got pretty good because I spent hours and hours looking at pictures. It was fairly easy for a couple of years, because there weren't that many companies making them and molds came out less frequently, so you had plenty of time to look at pictures before a new mold came out. I find myself lost with sculpts now! There are so many new companies and new molds coming out, it is difficult to keep up with all of them.

    55. I can tell sculpts only on that I'm interested in, like all minifee from Fairyland.

    56. Volks F-28 was the first I could recognize and many more Volks followed quickly. It was easier to recognize sculpts back then, I think, 'cause there were only a few companies. Nowadays, I'm having much more trouble telling sculpts apart. The olders sculpts are easy for me, but all the new sculpts from new companies... pfff, no idea.

    57. The very first sculpts i could recognize were Luts El, Lishe and shiwoo, because those were the first bjd photos i found thanks to google, 7-8 years ago or so xD
So i looked at those a lot.

    58. Luts CP Delf Shiwoo.

I SO wanted the Shiwoo Elf as my first BJD. Never got him, but his was still the first sculpt I could spot in pictures.

After that I think it was a pretty close thing between Unoa Lusis and Narae (given that I resisted getting into Slim Mini's but now have both of these sculpts in the family I really should have seen it as a sign that I could spot time so easily in pictures)

      Teddy

    59. Any LTF or MNF, mainly the Minifee's. The reason behind this is becaues I spend alot of time looking at all scults for aloooooooooong time before actually buying one.

    60. I've been in the hobby officially since May 2013 when I bought my 1st SD16 Megu. I quickly caught on to recognizing Volks F-01 and Fairyland's Celine & Chloe (I just got Chloe in Jan 2014). Also Unoa Lusis because she's so different looking. Obviously the Cerise dolls however I do not understand them....what are they? I need to research them.
