What unique features of a doll do you adore?

Sep 1, 2021

    1. Most of the dolls I own or that are on my wishlist have Asian features (Bimong Dandelion, Do Dolls Dream Misao, Dollmore Mio, Rosengarden Hana, etc.). I don't have any Asian heritage - I just think these sculpts are really beautiful! I also love sleeping/partially-closed-eyes sculpts. Unusual or well defined noses and cheekbones are very attractive to me, but often belong to dolls larger than I can deal with (Black Cherry Aishat is one of my favorite sculpts ever, but unfortunately she is needs a large SD body and the largest I can handle is under 60cm).

    2. I LOVE dolls with hooves! That always gets me looking and wanting to have them myself :love

    3. Interesting noses, (NO MORE SKI-SLOPES for me, Not my own jam at aalllll) interesting cheekbones, deepset eyes and JAWLINES. Gimme a killer jawline and I'm sold.

    4. New Straight noses with a rounded tip. I have two dolls with this nose shape and I'm obsessed aaaaaaaahhhhh :love

please ignore the swoopy pointy nose invasion in the background

I also have a doll with the best aquiline nose, nosebridge bump and all ... I'm so in love with my blunt-nosed dolls! Like Rosslyn said, no more ski slopes for me!

    5. New Downturned eyes, long ears/lamb-like ears (so like, more droopy than typical elf ears), weird centaurs (I have horse, giraffe, deer, and wolf), paws or hooves, visible teeth (the more the better, but I'll settle for little fangs).

    6. New An interesting nose or eye shape will always draw me to a head! I'm also a fan of aquiline noses – I have two (Mori9 Lyra and Bimong Grey). Gyoha convinced me to finally get a Switch head because of his interesting nose.

I'm fond of heads that have what I can only describe as a Nō mask quality: different expressions from different angles. The two dolls I have that exhibit this quality best are my Volks F-55 and Angell-Studio Hua Rong. From some angles they're serene; from others, annoyed or sinister.

I'm also a sucker for well-sculpted static option hands and well-sculpted bodies that aren't overly muscular.
I'm at the point in the hobby where I know what qualities in a doll are make or break for me, which helps deter impulse purchases and ignore the "oooh shiny new doll!" devil on my shoulder when it rears its head.

    7. New I love dolls with realistic facial features. Male dolls with a strong looking face, leaning more toward chiseled features rather than young and sweet. I'm similar with the female dolls I like, I prefer mature beauty over cute. Though I wouldn't mind cute in a doll that's supposed to be a child. I just prefer my adult dolls to look well, like adults.

    8. New Dollstown Yujin is pretty much everything I love. Somewhat mousy face with curved lips and a sharp nose.

    9. New Hmm... uncommon doll features?
BIG dolls at 1/2 scale, but more are creeping up there (T&D 85 cm boys, Luts Royal Senior Delf, good ol' Dollmore Trinity).

Gorgeous but fantasy creepy/horror/monsters, like D.Lace's BJD head No. 8, DollZone Robotica X-NANA and X-NANA halfling (also sculpted by D.Lace), Dream Valley's Abyss (corpse mermaid), and Dream Valley's mantitaurs Rita and Freyja.

People already say my dolls are creepy. I'm leaning into my monster era.

Yes to that! I looove different noses, especially with rounded tips. The cutest nose and cheek combo has my ANS Isabella. She is so squishy and soft. For an SD sculpt she is quite unusual IMO. Another one is QQdoll's Karla. Such a precious button nose:love

The pointy nose many dolls have are great too obviously, but there's something about the added realism a non-perfectly straight, maybe bumpy or broad, nose has. @aihre If you love aquiline noses then Switch's new boy Garam might be something for you. He has a georgeous nose! He was so tempting (and still is) even for me as a girl only collector:whee:

Thanks for the rec! I'm afraid Switch dolls including Garam are not to my taste, but I appreciate how so many of them have interesting noses ^^ It's always worth searching for profile views of dolls - sometimes the profile and/or nose are the #1 selling point, sometimes they're the dealbreaker :sweat

    12. New I love when dolls have multiple neck joints, it kind of adds a creepy vibe.

I wholeheartedly agree with this! I adore the extra joints that some of the Doll Chateau bodies have (giving them a delightfully eerie, elongated look.) It can look so creepy or fantasy, depending upon the context of the character. I’ve been lucky enough to snag 4 such bodies over my years in the hobby (1 SD and 3 MSD.) I absolutely adore how expressive and fun to pose they are.:)

    14. New In addition to all the other great points, which I agree with because who doesn't love a strong profile or beautifully sculpted bodies, I really like dolls with faceplates that have more than just two expressions. I have two Bishonen House dolls (Mia and Spike) and both dolls have a full suite of great and striking expressions that make photostories easier and the expressiveness of the dolls heightened. I especially love what I'm calling "The Aggrieved Dork" expression Starscream (my Spike is a human!former because ofc he is) has. It's so in character. But I also have many in-character expressions for Starscream like 'Snivelly begging' and 'Horrified disgust' and 'Greedily intrigued'. Most dolls only have neutral expressions or a "sleeping" face and sometimes there are expressive plates like for Unoas, but BH goes to the next level.

    15. New Ooh I just saw this thread! I don’t have any super unique dolls so far, but I got a Ringdoll K head after falling in love with his look years ago—he has a super sharp aquiline nose and a dour expression that I just adore :aheartbea I love dolls with noses like that so much, I’ve started collecting a list of them for the future :)

I also agree with the previous repliers about extra joints/elongated bodies—I don’t own any DC bodies yet, but I’d loveee to get one someday because I love that sort of alien quality they have…I might even end up pairing one with K’s head haha.

The other uncommon feature I’d love to get on a doll someday is multiple (extra) arms, especially on a gender neutral/more masculine body!! I’m thinking of maybe seeing if I could get Resinsoul to make me a modded body like that someday, since I’ve heard that’s something they can do…but if a doll ever comes out with a combo of the Doll Chateau-style joints and proportions + extra arms I’d be over the moon :XD:

    16. New Oh, and I forgot to add!! I loveeee dolls that look like older adults (Ize Stage’s Marbas and Lumens Studio’s Giselle and Viper for example)…would love to own some of them someday too!! I wish there were more dolls like that in 1/4 scale, and bodies that look older in general :’)

Oh my goodness yes. I LOVE faceplates. Unoa Lucis/Sist and Chibi Lilan/Roan are amazing for this, as is Fairyland, and Tianba made a 75 cm head with faceplates too. I wonder why more companies don't make them? They're so great! New doll with a quick swap!

    18. New I love centaur dolls and have an entire herd at my place! Im especially fond of nicely sculpted fur or feathering around hooves or feet.
Im also a sucker for a good feathery bird-person. I have dreamvalley Maurren and Bethel and just love thier little birdy features! for example Maurren has a beautiful crow-like iridescence to his feathers that made me spring for the fullset and Bethel has these really cool feather details on his arms and legs that I have yet to finalize because I'm looking for the perfect shoes to compliment and show them off lol

    19. New I love when dolls show teeth. I feel it makes the facial expression seem more alive to me.

    20. New I love super skinny boys, and there just aren't enough of them in 1/3 scale! Luts Muse and Doll Chateau Youth are the best! Gimme those bones! Hip bones, collarbones, ribs, chest bones, I want to see them all! "Slender" isn't enough, I want a bag of bones! I really really wish Dream Valley had a body like their B4-04 51cm, but around 65cm. That would be amazing, that body is gorgeous!

    21. New I think chins are also a super interessting feature and it can really make or break a dolls facial balance. Like if the sculpt is really rounded but has a super pointy and narrow chin it seems kind of off... Also having not just a difference between rounded and pointy, but actual sculpting is so nice. One example would be Pandolla Box Azalea. She sort of has a "butt" chin. However I find it just adorable on her, because it adds to the character and expression! I haven't seen many dolls with that sort or other special chins as of yet:ablink:

    22. New a wide nose! Or just any non eurocentric noses but I definitely don't see wide noses much.

      • x 4
    23. New Stylized forearms that taper outward, and tippy-tappy hoof-like robot legs (not sure how to describe that).. Batchix's Mini-Machina dolls are sooo cute and a perfect example of both of these.

    24. New My first response is... the smile! I find it truly challenging to bond with a doll if I don't feel like it is happy to be with me, so all my dolls need to have some form of a smile, whether it is a wide one or just that the corners of the mouth are slightly upward.
As for a second trait... noses! Big breathing-able noses! It is a pet peeve of mine when I see a doll with a nose so tiny that if it was on a person you'd know he/she would have trouble breathing correctly. No, thank you.

    25. New I love teeth! And I love a sculpted in expression. But I do like interesting features and unusual proportions. The anime resin dolls have got their hooks into me of late.

      • x 4
    26. New Animal anthro dolls that have proper snouts (specifically the ones that aren't cats, who of course naturally have very small noses). I don't object to human heads with animal ears as a look, but to be a proper animal anthro to me it needs a proper muzzle. Like gem of doll orion fox version, dream valley griffin dragons, dream valley robin wolf version, dollzone chinese dragons, etc. They're out there, but they're kind of rare. Even with cat dolls, I prefer the bigger snouts, like the dearmine dearlover heather and oscar, etc.

    27. New Actual animal BJDs. Spiders, puppies, and ESPECIALLY kitties! Ooh, how I would love a real, proper BJD horse.
Iplehouse has a full line of absolutely adorable pet BJDs. I have dis. It is divine. If you ask very, very nicely, and you agree that you are OK with receiving an unblushed doll, they might make a pet BJD for you, too. (also, let me know if they do. I would love a Boston Terrier or a kitty, and if several of us ask at the same time, they might be more willing to make the molds.)
Also - it is HEAVY. It weighs as much as a real cat at about 1/2 the height (same length, tho).

    28. New Interesting nose shape and a faint, subtle smile. If together, that’s a jackpot for me.
