What single thing can you blame for getting you into BJDs?

Aug 18, 2011

    1. Rozen Maiden. I saw the Volks Suigintou long before I even knew what BJDs were and craved one. In fact I still do haha!

    2. My friend... sort of.

I've known about BJD's for a long time since 2005, but never actually bought and just enjoyed the idea of getting but probably not sort of thing. Instead, I've started out with Pullips in 2009. I've introduced my friend to Pullips and so forth, and showed her BJD's. At first we were like, Nah, we're never going to get something big as a BJD... and... what do you know? My friend went to HK and came back with a BJD in 2011. And from there on... it just happened...?

    3. Deviantart and the preeeeetty pictures people post of their resin kids over there. They got me curious so I looked up what they were, then looked at some companies, then found this forum... and then I was DOOMED FOREVER. In a good way, of course.

    5. Kingdom Hearts.

I had known about ABJDs before, as I was into customizing Dollfie when Super Dollfie first gained popularity with the Dollfie collectors. I dismissed them at first, thinking he glass eyes looked kind of creepy, and they cost way too much. (and you had to get someone to import them... crazy times)

A few years later, I was playing Kingdom Hearts and couldn't shake the thought that Sora looked like "one of those dolls", so I went to look them up again. In the meantime, a LOT more companies had come out and the styles varied a lot, and I started to find ones that I liked, and got over the eye thing. The first one I really fell in love with was Camine by Dream of Doll, and I couldn't stop staring at his pictures for DAYS. We had a big chunk of money coming in shortly thereafter, so I set aside some to buy a doll, and ended up buying an El.

    6. I was into Pullips/Taeyangs for awhile, and it's hard to do a search for those dolls without getting hits for BJDs as well. Also, Pullipstyle.com has a Ringdoll section that I would often look at since I was interested and confused as to what they were. I still have a soft spot for Ringdoll sculpts :) Then the dA pictures got me hooked, especially the Dollshe Saint. I stopped buying Pullips and switched to BJDs!

    7. For me it was really easy to get into the hobby -- I collect dollhouses and I got suckered in by the teeniest tinies that go with dollhouses, namely Pukis and Catsys! And once I had those dolls it was a very slippery slope into YoSD, MSD . . .

    9. I blame the fact that Barbie Bazaar magazine went out and was 'replaced' by Haute Doll magazine. I had been a Barbie collector and got out of the hobby for several years. A fellow bead artist started talking about dolls and I got to thinking about them again, so to get back into the hobby I went looking for Barbie Bazaar magazine only to find that it no longer existed! Still wanting to satisfy my curiosity about what dolls were out there I bought a copy of Haute Doll magazine and as they say: the rest was history! That was almost 3 years ago! I'm so happy I found bjd's- they've opened a world of creativity for me that I never could enjoy with Barbies! :)

She discovered Blythe dolls and while I thought they were cute I decided to buy a pullip. But when we went to a Blythe meet, someone had brought along a lati yellow lea, a soom centaur, and a soom elf.... I was (and am) smitten by them!

    16. Rozen Maiden! When I finished watching the first season, I googled "Rozen Maiden Dolls". Of course, I wanted FanArt or something, but I saw a picture of a doll cosplaying Shinku. Clicked on it and read about it on the site where it had been posted. Yep. Pretty much that.

    20. I was at a ball jointed doll pannel at an Anime Convention and sitting in the front row. One of the SD dolls took a headder into my lap and when I held that doll for the first time, even though it was breifly to put him back up onto the table, I knew I had to have one.

    23. Cleaning my closet. No, really. I cleaned out my closet and found an old doll of mine, one of those cloth-body with plastic/vinyl arms, head, and legs. Poor thing has been bald for years, so I thought I'd buy her a wig. In my search, I discovered that, hey, maybe a BJD wig would fit her. And then I started researching BJDs. I'd seen them on DeviantArt, but hadn't given too much thought to them. Once I began looking at dolls, I was hooked.

    26. Having been into dolls my whole life, I can "blame" my participation at an annual Gene Marshall Doll Convention....I think this was GeneCon in 2000. Anyway, there was another Gene fan that brought her Volks Madoka (Japanese version) with her and I reeeally wanted that doll. :) It wasn't until September of 2004 that I started reading about ABJDs in FDQ and Haute Doll magazines, and saw a full page ad announcing Volks release of SDC Kaede. I missed being able to get her from Volks, and found DoA soon after through the link published in an article in FDQ. Thanks to the Marketplace, and another member who answered my WTB, SDC Kaede became my first doll. :love

    31. Loved Drawing > Liked reading pretty Manga and imitating the artists' style to practice getting better at drawing > Fell into the Manga/Anime World > So on vacation in Japan one year, when I was in middle school, I visited Akihabara > Saw detailed Anime Figurines and researched about them > found Obitsu > found Volks = gateway into the BJD world!

I really liked the idea of creating one own doll. I've always loved dolls, but I found dolls like Barbie, Bratz, and Licca chan to be a bit impersonal. I love creating things so bjds were intriguing because it's 3d art! The 60-70cm ones were really neat because they were so big and all the dolls have many posing abilities. Also, they are so much more detailed than any Barbie or toy-doll. And there are so many more reasons why I love bjds, but I can't seem to remember it all right now.

    32. I was content looking at the pretty pictures from afar until I visited a friend and held her Volks boy.

He was a SD16, I think, and I was impressed by his size and his heft and his craftsmanship and his beauty.

I think I sat there with him on my knee all evening and held his little hand the entire time.

From that very moment, the tiny ember of "I'm curious but I still don't get it..." sparked into a full-on flame.

That was last October! In less than a year, I've got 3 at home, another on order, and a floating head on its way.

      Good grief.

I found out what they were at a anime convention and they kinda creeped me out bc they were soo life like. the next year when i went back to the con i saw them again and i started to get curious and alittle less creeped out. and then one day i was like i think i wanna do some research on bjds and fell in love with with a few of them. then i really wanted one. my main reason is so i can make costumes for my doll bc i dont have space and places to wear costumes for myself. plus the customization is just amazing. im a very new owner and so far im loving it!

Then, for my 20th birthday this year (Early March, but birthday is in April), my fiancee presented me with Parabox Alice (40cm Obitsu), and I currently have 2 more dolls and one on layaway; and I wouldn't change it for the world. :)

    58. I doubt anybody will actually read this, but the first ABJD I saw was I think about 6 years ago on China Cart, modeling their clothes on a smaller scale. I took an interest in her, but never thought that I'd actually start collecting expensive dolls someday.

Years later, I'm looking for a realistic, flexible easily posable model and after trying mannequins and looking into various other alternatives, while I was browsing through things, I ran into Iplehouse EID Asa and the moment I saw her face, I knew I had to have her! That opened the floodgates and I just broke right into my savings.

Before I saw her, ball joints were a total turn off for me. But suddenly Asa's face mad the joints seem so trivial. Ever since then I've been obsessed with Iplehouse dolls, but I've also taken a liking to several others, like Asleep Eidolon and such.

    60. @ Dirili - Thats really neat.

I Blame the Korean Horror movie: The doll master. I fell in love at first sight. Funny how dolls killing humans can get you into that sorta thing ^^;; I just loved how precious they looked. And one of the themes of the movie "If you love something so much, it may get a soul" Kinda intrigued me since i love creepyness. I began searching dolls and came across Dream of Doll. I was still in high school and broke at the time, so i moved away from any doll in that price range. When I found bobobie, i was shocked at the price, but as soon as I saw the Apollo, i knew it was meant to be. 3 weeks after watching that horror flick, i bought the Apollo. To this day "Doll Master" is my favourite asian horror movie. Thank you dolls that murder people, you got me into this hobby :)
