Haute Doll Magazine! December 2007 issue which had an article on DIM's Minimee and Jennifer Sutherland. The two articles showed me just how versitile BJDs are / can be.
I blame my dolls on my friend, Tessa, we both started out with dollfie dreams the 27 cm ones. She collected a ton of ABJD photos to look at. She got her first ABJD before me. And got to play with her doll a lot.
My two friends Orasteele and Britain. They have 18+ dolls and a wiki devoted to them. After seeing their first ones five years ago, I finally caved. XD
I blame one of my best friends for it. She had bought a BJD about a year ago and before I knew it I was addicted myself.
I was checking out artist bears online and came across BJDs. At that time I never thought I'd have one as I never liked dolls much as a child so couldn't understand why I was attracted to them plus they were very expensive. Three years down the line and I have two and a wish list! I guess that means the one single thing was either the internet or my first collectable bear.
I blame it on my creative and artistic side. xD I just had to cruise around DA and happen upon one of them. Sparked interest. Research. BAM! Now I'm waiting for my first boy to come home. This beautiful black hole sucked me into it and now I dun wanna leave! xDDDD
I watched the first episode of Rozen Maiden and loved it. After which I proceeded to watch the entire series in less than a week. Next thing I knew I was looking online for a doll and had one shipped to me.
A beautiful photo of a cat version Lati Yellow Lami by JennyCouture on Flickr! I saw it and immediately knew that I needed a doll like that! Sure enough, my first doll was a Lami (although basic).
The internet. xD But if you want to be really specific, Deviantart. I can't remember what Iwas searching for, but a Delf El came up in my search and I fell in love..I didn't end up with an El, or even SDs, but it got me researching and led me to DOA
Simply their beauty. When I first saw pictures of them I was stunned, a few I was wondering "is this a real person?" I guess I'm drawn to beauty.
Getting an obitsu. I bought a 21 cm to use ONLY as a reference for drawing, and I became obsessed with dressing it up. Instead of buying more clothes and a better head and stuff for it... "go big or go home!" bought a big one :3
Soom. Specifically, their Monthly Dolls. When I originally started seeing photos of BJDs in my (other, non-BJD) hobby forums, I dismissed them as not being that interesting. I'd never really been into dolls, and all the BJDs I saw were very anime, Volks-style dolls (which are beautiful in their own way, but not my thing). Even when I started seeing BJDs here and there which had faces which appealed to me, as soon as I saw the prices I decided I just couldn't justify it for 'just a doll'. Soom's MDs are a completely different thing to me. I find them much more appealing, due to their more realistic sculpts. And instead of being 'just dolls', they're more like dolls-and-a-half, because they often include two sets of legs, two sets of arms, two heads, etc. I suddenly found the cost much easier to deal with (even though Soom MDs are obviously a bit pricier that other BJDs the same size, due to all the extra sculpting and resin they require). I think it's safe to say that Soom singlehandedly got me into this hobby
Well for me I saw some on DeviantArt and thought they were pretty, but in looking them up noticed the price... so that kind of put a bug in my head. But the turning point was when I went to Otakon with a friend and after having saved for a year had the money to buy one there.
I thought it was funny you use the word "blame" -- I love the dolls. Maybe it is that soft whisper of too much for my budget? errr, sorta, kinda HOPE that isn't too far off topic. DeviantArt galleries and especially one friend I made in dA. I bought my first doll from her.
My brother who first sent me a link to a bjd site. I was instantly hooked. Took me only a few months afterward before short on cash, I bought my first Abio Angel. I remember for some reason thinking that they were only like 5 cm tall at first, haha. It was a late night, and I was reading cm as mm or something XP So I thought the expense was absolutely off the wall, though I was even MORE intrigued by the intense detail.
I can probably blame Gackt. I found BJDs while getting into Japanese stuff and when I found all those pretty boys in the 'visual kei' scene, BJDs popped up in my search results and I've wanted one ever since.
Someone on a completely different forum posted a few stories about their time making custom parts for BJDs. A few people joined in with stories and pictures of their own dolls. When I realized I could get a doll just for making little knitting patterns and outfits I was hooked!
My downstairs neighbor in my dorm is at fault for getting me into the hobby. I don't live in the dorm anymore, but her room was full of them and after a while I got sucked in. Now I have four dolls, and my girlfriend has 4 dolls. My other roommate has something like 10 I think. We're a doll loving home.
My friend from work is very into BJDs and it made me curious to find out more about them. She sent me to the Fairyland website and I was done for!
hmm my friend Andreja had some, which told me about them, but in a weird way I think it was the Final Fantasy 13 Versus trailer that made me want my first BJD. I really liked the main character, and wanted to make a cosplay version of him. Even though I liked her dolls before that, I didn't have a desire to get one myself.
My single thing is my bestie, and in extension, her doll, Theo. Somehow, she can gather hundreds of dollars and buy beautiful dolls, and I'm completely broke. Took me a whole year to save for my only doll at the moment, but it was SO worth it. Weird, because I never had any interest in dolls before I met my friend in '09, and when she brought her doll to school, I gawked over it and suddenly realized how much I wanted a doll like hers. She's gathered a few more dolls since then, but I'm still happy I spent what I did on my dollie so much. Only problem is that I never have any money, so I can't buy any more dolls anytime soon.
Homme Ducan from Dream of Doll <<; My friend in high school showed me pictures of her dolls and I didn't really like them. Years after I decided to randomly ask my friend about them. She gave me some links and I learned a little bit about them. Of course when I searched for sites that sold them, the DOD site came up. I clicked and saw a pic of Ducan and went "*Jaw drop* Woah.... I wants him...." XD;
Bill Kaulitz of Tokio Hotel. I saw dolls on livejournal that people had customized to look like him and I had to find out what they were. That search led me to DoA. I now have Dollshe's, Limhwa's, a Bill MNM, and my next is a Soom. Thanks, Bill. You always get my money, one way or another! lol
Simple, my friend Megan xD She introduced me to them and I was immediately taken. I guess if I had to blame a doll though, it was Dollzone Megi. His ugly-cuteness still gets me and I want another one day.
Haute Doll magazine. I picked one up in Barnes&Noble in a search for a source of bulk fimo, took one look at the BJDs inside (there was a Pullip on the cover) and knew I had to have one. I didn't even like dolls. I still have a copy of it... I should go look at it now that it's been a few years and I'm familiar with the sculpts and see what it was that I saw.
Obitsu. I was customizing Barbies and action figs to look like characters, and then I discovered Obitsu, and then it was just fate from there.
Fellow user on ponyisland. I had seen some bjd in past, none with I liked, but she showed her littlefee and then I was goner.
I blame that little bookstore at the mall... I always go in there to browse the magazines or manga section and i stumbled upon a doll magazine. The front cover caught my attention. I don't remember who the doll was but I think it was a volks. That got me thinking about them and I didn't get to read what they were called because I left without even thinking of knowing what these dolls were called. I figured I'd find it online somewhere. Well... since I didn't know what they were called, I had a hard time finding them. So I gave up after awhile. But one day, I was searching for something (I don't quite remember what), I stumbled upon the term BJD's... and that there started it. After finding BJD's I signed up for DOA and that opened up the Pandora dollie box :P
On a train I met a girl who taught me two of their BJDs and I loved them, but one made me think automatically "OMG, I do not want one, i NEED one."
DeviantArt Specifically, Onnawufei's Key. He was the first BJD I ever saw, and I was intrigued so I googled BJD to look at some pictures of others. I thought they were beautiful, but my interest only piqued when I found out they could be customized to look any way you want. Immediately a whole world of possiblities opened up to me! I always loved creating my own characters, and would often play games where you had to create the character you played- only to stop playing as soon as I had finished making the characters
First time I saw Volks doll, like, 8 years ago or so at some japanese magazine... I liked the possibilities of bjd but really disliked sculpts, available at that moment. Then I started to check up new sculpts every 4-5 months, till 2008, when I saw a doll I had to buy. Now I have 4, + 4 on their way n 2 on wish list. eh...
To be legit, cosplay. Since I have a cosplay wishlist of things I want to make as long as santa's nice list, I know that I'll never be able to get through them all, so I was interested in getting a doll so that I could sew mini cosplays for her, to satisfy my need to get through the cosplay wishlist.
What single thing can you blame for getting you into ABJDs you ask? I would have to say 'the love of all things action fugure'. Had it not been for that evil, I would have probably never gotten into this evil I swear. When I say evil, i mean evil for my finances. i love the dolls and all their options but I am an impulse buyer and i cannot be that with BJDs. I really have to be sure that what ever I buy is something i am going to love for a very long time. I am new to this hobby and already have six of these beauties so I know I better lay off the 'buy it now' buttom on ebay and now DOA.
Deviant Art, and my love for art. I first found them while looking at random pictures and had to investigate! Every time i saw (or see) one with a beautiful face up or in an amazing photo i wanted (or want) one even more.
ANIME CONVENTION AND FATE I WENT(AWA), I FOUND(RANDOM DOOR THAT WAS REALLY HARD TO NOTICE AND DON'T KNOW WHY I WAS DRAWN TO IT AT THE TIME), I SAW/CAUGHT IMMEDIATE INTEREST(A GORGEOUS MALE DOLL WITH PUNK CLOTHES THAT I HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE), I RECEIVED(INFO TO BJD SITES), I FOUND(A BJD OF MY DREAMS FROM D.O.D), AND THE REST IS HISTORY(TRULY AWESOME/FUN HISTORY)! As for the future, ASIAN BALL JOINTED DOLLS AND FASHION STYLE CLOTHES THAT SUIT THEM PLEASE! =^__^=
Shopping on Ebay, for eyeball rings. Saw small set of glasses under doll section. Doll section had a dreaming shiwoo on auction. Enslaved! He haunted me. Didn't win that auction. But I did get my Shiwoo.
When I was little my mother got me into collecting Porcelain dolls and collector barbies. She says this isn't why I'm obsessed with ABJDs now, but I know that it has to be.... plus the fact that they are Asian and I love everything Asian.
I'll have to blame a friend of my friend about this. I visited her place (my friend was also there) and got a closer look of her BJD. It was definitely a love at first sight and it didn't take much time before I registered myself to a Finnish BJD site and bought my first doll second handly.
Kerli and her walking on air video, I'd known about them before but I think seeing someone with one made and especially one so beautiful made me want to look further into the hobby
I saw an article in Haute Doll many years ago and instantly fell in love! I've always loved dolls and always wanted a doll like ABJDs. I just never knew dolls like that really existed. And so I had become determined to get my hands on these things. But when I saw the price point made I was so upset... No matter! I worked hard, saved, budgeted and now I have 3.5! (Waiting for a head.) ...I also plan on getting my hands on those PukiPukis and PukiFees. <__<;
What single thing can you blame for getting you into ABJDs? For me it was a person...she is vampelley here on DoA. When we first meet she was collecting an off-topic doll to DoA. It was a friend of hers who first bought a BJD, then another and then Elley bought her first girl. I've always liked dolls - but couldn't see why people paid the prices. I kept looking - window shopping and thinking I'd never take the plunge. Then one year at AnimeFest Elley asked if her friends could room with us. I was surrounded by resin - but had a 5 month old baby. For the next year Elley kept at it, reminding me how much I wanted a bjd and she even helped nag the hubby into buying my first doll as as an anniversary gift. The tradition holds - each year he buys (or partially funds) a doll as my anniversary gift. And I now own more resin then Elley....not really sure how that happened!
Well I blame a recent ex-friend of mine that i meet at work who had one she plopped one of her dolls on my lap when i was over at her house one day and I was smitten from then on I was obsessed with finding the perfect first doll (which became my DZ X) until about not quite two months later having finally saved up money got my first doll joining DOA the month that he arrived. Now I have eleven and still have plans for more.
My source of blame, eh? I have to blame DreamofDoll website. Stumble upon that site accidentally when browsing for some cosplay materials..and BAM. Starting to fell in love with other doll manufacturers *especially Iplehouse XD* My friend Fransyung is also on the list :P *sorry Fransyung :P* Amongst my social circle she is the first one that own a doll. Seeing the real-life-thing urges me to own one for myself XD But also thanks to her I finally have my own~
I was doing a google search for kodona styles and came across a photo of some of the dream of doll dolls. Soon I found out that they were called BJDs and as I did more searches I soon found this here forum and the doll that would be the start of it all. ^^
My friend on DA. We became friends because we both liked BioShock. In addition to her fanart and fanfiction, she would post beautiful pictures of her dolls. Until that point, the only pictures I had seen of BJDs were on DA, and they creeped me the heck out. It was like the owners wanted them to look like members of a reject JPop goth band, and a majority of them all had really bizarre, horrible personal stories that revolved around shallow, kinky sex. But my friend posted beautiful pictures of these delicate little dolls with lovely outfits and great eyes and fabulous faces. Soon I started looking up BJDs out of curiosity. I can't say it was completely positive at first. In fact, I laughed a great deal. "Geez, why would anyone want these dolls? They all have the same stinkin' faces. And why do all the dudes look like underwear models? Sheesh, I could buy a car for what it would take to... OH MY GOD THAT IS THE COOLEST DOLL I HAVE EVER SEEN." So then I bought a doll. The end.
I went to a BJD pannel at an anime convention because a friend of mine dragged me to it. She was more into dolls than I was. I figured I'd go though, and when I went there was this one doll that I just fell in love with~ I bought like a twenty pictures of him xD And then I found the owner on DA. From there I saw more pictures of all kinds of dolls and I just had to have one. c:
Hmm, that is an interesting question. I guess, if I went back to the root of things, I'd say Peter Jackson and Hugo Weaving. [I can't blame Tolkien because I didn't.. finish the books until after I saw The Fellowship of the Ring (tried reading them when I was younger and just couldn't get into them) and that inspired me to finally sit down and read TLotR.] But I love Hugo Weaving and love the movies, which got me looking for Elrond stuff on evilBay. There I discovered someone (whom I later discovered was our very own Buff here on DoA) selling an Elrond outfit for a Super Dollfie. After I picked my jaw up off the floor and went "WTH is that and where can I get me one", I did some Googling of Super Dollfie and found the wonderful world of ABJDs. And the rest, as it's said, was all downhill from there. Five months later I had my first BJD, a Shiwoo elf. LM
For me, it's the customizable options...and i LOVE, sewing in smaller sizes, but hated most dolls ( barbie ect.) But i saw he prices and have never been in a place financially to get one.. then i saw Her....and yep, every spare penny, is going to my first doll...
A member on here, Vanille. I saw her pictures of PKFs on a different forum on August 8th and fell in love instantly. Today I await my first bjd
