What single thing can you blame for getting you into BJDs?

Aug 18, 2011

1. My friend, who already had a couple, was looking for a shell for her character, and when the Elfdoll K came out, she thought she might have him. She was all excited and linked to the Elfdoll site on her Livejournal. At the time I thought they were cool, but had no intention of buying myself one of those 'overpriced' dolls. I liked the K a little bit, but it wasn't enough to convince me (until later). Out of sheer curiosity, I decided to check out the other dolls on the site.

Then I saw this face.

It was over. I had to have him.
I still do. And I always will :)

3. The fact that I was always looking for dolls which are skinnier and less childish looking compared to most artist dolls. My mum collects dolls, too, and I always said that if I would be able to make dolls they would be skinny, pale and almost fairish looking dolls. My vision came pretty close to asian ball jointed dolls - I just didn't have joints in mind and of course no removable wigs. When I saw the first ABJD I immediately fell in love with her (Megu) and I knew that I had to have at least one of these beautiful dolls.

7. Idleness! pure and simple. I was recuperating from surgery and didn't have the energy for my usual hobbies so I was looking at Haute Doll magazine and saw some BJD. Out of curiosity I did a web search ended up on DoA and got hooked. Ended up buying a Unidoll Jace from SDink and the rest is expensive history.

8. I think it was the realisation that you can take these dolls apart and you are supposed to customise them, despite them being so expensive. What also helped was the fact that there were so many man and boy dolls and they were not meant as just an accessory for the girl dolls (like Barbie's Ken).

9. GAFF - the old fanfiction forum. There was a discussion in the General section about bjds and people were saying how beautiful they were, but OMG!, the price!! Anyway, I was interested enough to Google bjds and was amazed - at the beauty and the prices :...( When I came into a bit of money a few months later, I ordered two dolls and have continued collecting ever since.

10. It's an odd one, but... a quest. My mother needed an doll\action figure to pose for drawing, and we all know those little wooden models are terrible. So I was looking all over the internet at various dolls until I came across BJDs. And then I became obsessed. And then I saved up. And then I actually became a hobbyist and not just a crazed admirer. (My mother found another doll for her drawings for much cheaper which soon broke but she didn't want to spend as much as I was willing to on a BJD! Now she just borrows my LTF hybrids. > _ < )

15. I saw Blythes in Flickr contact's stream about a year ago and found out a little about them, but I decided they were too expensive and difficult to get. (HA!) Several months ago while I was working on my 365 photo project I stumbled on a 365 toy project and found BJDs. It wasn't long after doing a little research that I knew I had to get one, or a couple! number 2 in on the way!

16. well I had a long-held interest in bjds before I thought of purchasing one for myself. I admired them and learned about them but I had never held one "in the flesh" as it were.

The single thing I can blame is actually my friend SummerRaine who is a member on here xD I encountered her dolls unexpectedly at her house (she had never mentioned them to me, and I had never told her of my interest in them) and from the moment I first physically held one I knew I would become a collector. After that, it was simply a matter of researching sculpts in more detail until I found the right ones.

17. I blame drawing... At some point back in 2001 I wanted to draw a 'scary japanese doll' (*LOL*) and went looking for some inspiration online. When a picture of the most beautiful face popped up on my screen (a Luts Soony I found out later), I knew I had to find out about these dolls, and if possible buy one.. or.. a lot.. XD

18. I cant remember what moment I got into them, my first interest was with Volks dollfie Dreams and then I obsessed over them for a long time and I knew about resin dolls and recently Iv been obsessing over resin dolls. Mostly because of their weight and the different types you can get, and because they are resin (:
But I probably woulnt have found out about BJD's if it wasn't for Anime :D Anime opended me up to a lot of things ^^ All i need now is MONEY!

20. It wasn't a 'what', it was a 'who' -- my very dear friend SadisticSaint was talking about getting one, and my reaction at the time was something along the lines of 'are you serious you're buying a doll for THAT MUCH?' But then I kept looking. And looking. And looking. And at some point I got hooked. Now, six dolls later...XD

I will blame Bleach for triggering my very first OH MY GOD I MUST HAVE THAT doll moment, though. I never planned on making a character doll of any kind until I saw one particular sculpt and my brain went OMFG HITSUGAYA. (Irony: Hitsugaya has never been my favorite character from that particular series.) Thus, I had to have a Hitsugaya doll. It snowballed from there.

24. I don't exactly know how it happened, but I followed the links and stumbled across doll and thought, "Oh wow, how gorgeous!" and they let me to the Dream of Doll website where I spent at least an hour looking at dolls - particularly a boy doll with black hair. I can vaguely remember the picture, but I have no idea which doll it was. T_T I feel the need to thank him. It's a new quest for me. Lol. Find out what doll it was.

From there, I joined DoA and learned. I fell in love with a HDF Muffin. I asked for one, and my aunt laughed at me. It wasn't like I was asking her for it either. I kind of fell away from BJDs for awhile because of it. However... I was brought back by a BBB March. C:

In a way, I guess it was the dolls themselves that did it every time.

26. 100% of the "blame" for me is Bob the pukisha puki who belonged to OnnaWufei. I saw that little kitten and I was instantly obsessed. A ton of googling later I found out what type of doll it was and where I could buy one. I also found DOA. 3 days after my first sighting, I had ordered my first puki from Fairyland. :)

28. Well... I saw my first one at A-kon. I fell in love at first sight. But could not own one where I lived. I had a vindictive room mate who would have loved the fact that I had some attachment to an item. It wasn't until after a few years later I moved out and onto my own. Then it dawned on me that I could actually have one..or two..or three with no one to tell me No or to take her away. So I did. Been hooked ever since.

Not to long after that I realized that I wanted to make my own elves and started to look into sculpting something uniquely mine.

32. One person and one person only is to blame: Zirconmermaid! She got her first doll, and was so enthused I had to do research and find out what she was talking about. Then I saw the photo of what would soon be my first doll and I was in love. As a kid I had stuffed animals but never liked dolls, so I was as surprised as anyone when I fell for one. Now I have seven.

39. Aernath and Ichigo :) 2006!

I had first seen a BJD when one of the anime cel outlets I frequented posted "Souldolls are here!" But I hadn't actually considered getting one till Aernath asked if I wanted to "do" BJDs with her. We both saw and ogled Elfdoll Red in looking for her Ichigo, but when she finally found Soo-Ri and snagged him I realized how much Red resembled some of my Kenshin pictures. And once I realized I actually could make a BIG Kenshin it was all over.

Red is still my very favorite sculpt; I tend to gravitate toward dolls that look like him in some way. :)

But it's her fault. She created a monstah!

I was in a Barnes and Nobles bookstore in Madison, WI when I passed by a Haute Doll magazine with a bjd on the front cover. I had never even heard of them before and when I got home I researched bjd's online. I couldn't get her (Claudine Belmont, a Peakswood Goldie with a face up by Val Zeitler) out of my mind, she was so beautiful. One month later, I broke down and bought her even though my head was reeling from the price.

46. It was back in 2004 when I first saw one. I know it was on an internet site but still to this day I cant remember exactly which one. It was probably someone's LJ, I know that was very popular back then!
I wanted one for the longest time, but my mom wouldnt get it and back then I knew nothing about most of the companies, or how to get one. It wasn't till 08' when I was at an Anime convention when I wen to a panel and saw one in person. Amazingly it's always the 'cheap' dolls that catch my eye in person. The first doll I ever saw was an Abio Angel and the first I ever held was a bobobie Tiny. A lady I talked to there taught me where to buy my 1st doll and told me to sign up for DOA. :)
From there I figured the rest out!

Due to financial reasons my dolly collection hasn't grown very much over the past few years, but the hobby isn't going any where for a while it seems so I have time! ;)

57. DannyChoo for me too, actually. I was into PVC figures and while browsing DannyChoo I saw posts of DDs. I was very intrigued by them as they were REALLY BIG figures to me. While trying to find how to get one I saw Volks SDs, but didn't like them at all! I blame the Volks default face-ups and not-so-good company photos. Also I couldn't figure out how to order a DD outside Japan so I gave up on them... Later I thought I'd research more into these resin dolls and stumbled on a local forum. There I saw a link to DoD and fell in love with their photos of these gorgeous dolls! (E-an was my first love..)

I never thought I could get one though, until I found out about the tinies ;) And soon after my first doll was home! And thinking I went from liking DDs to buying a Soom TG as my first, a lot of changes did happen in the middle :) Now I'm actually in a point where I am getting that Volks SD, once I found out that repainted (and the defaults as well nowadays) they look gorgeous...

58. I think....my idol Fahr Sindram is to blame that I got into BJD's xDDD
I knew about BJD from a few articles from anime magazines and thought they would be pretty but didn't expect myself of getting one in the future. I played with the idea of having my OC as a doll but this didn't drive me nuts for them until the day I met Fahr-chan with her Laurie and I was allowed to pose him. As I am such a biiiig fan of her and of Laurie I was so amazed and full of joy that I started to want my beloved OC in dollie form too.
So I got nuts about BJD's .... I still don't have my OC completed but therefore I have 4 other dolls and am planning to get at least 8 more xD
In the end: art is my life and if I have the chance to cuddle my art and touch the thing I drew before ... what more can I want? xDDD

That's my story how I got into BJD's.
End of the story ♥
