What single thing can you blame for getting you into BJDs?

Aug 18, 2011

    1. Jenthered. I have always been a doll collector. I saw a Volks doll on ebay around 2005 but after I picked myself off the floor at the price I put them out of my head. In 2006 I got the chance to get an Obitsu Gretel. I looove her but decided she would be my only one. Then my friend Jenthered asked me to join her BJD group. So I did. It just sucked me in seeing all the gorgeous dolls. Now I have sold tons of stuff to pay for my BJD obsession!

    4. I think I can blame the BJD Doll Convention 2007 in the Netherlands. At that convention I trully felt in love with my first doll, no matter what I needed to buy her :D

    6. For me it was j-rock cosplays. Back when I went to school, me and my room mate was seriously obsessed with Japan and j-rock, and one day she was looking up cosplay pictures on Livejournal (I think). She came across some pictures of Izams dolls and showed them to me. I was not impressed, especially because of the price. After that I began seeing these dolls everywhere, and I ended up joining the Danish BJD forum. Soon there was no way back, I was addicted. XD

    7. i just think that it would have to be, the first doll owners themselves. Why!? IF it's not because of their doll pics uploaded in the net, i might not even dream about trying to get one for myself. xD

    8. My love for manga/anime. And the first time I stumbled upon a BJD at a toy convention and I instantly went "oh god! That is like my fav anime/manga character come to life".

The rest is history. Its just a downward spiral from there. XD

    12. I never liked dolls until I saw some ABJDs on an auction site and started looking at as many pics and doll sites as possible. It's the endless customization that got me! I can have a doll/dolls (he,he) that look exactly the way I want! No mass produced clones for me!;)

I was image searching something completely unrelated and stumbled upon someone's photos and setup of their dolls, after that I did what I always do when something peaks my interest, I researched the crap out of them. Now I own two with another one hopefully coming home soon.

    14. My downfall/introduction to BJDs was the January 2005 issue of Haute Doll. I bought it and devoured the article! Read it, and re-read... THEN came to findout a friend of mine had like 3 Luts! I got to see them in person a few months later when we went to a con together.

but it was Volks DolpaLA2007 that lead me down to road to over 30 big dolls LOL LOL Thank you Reisner... it was allllllll your fault LOL

    16. Articulation.

Before I became aware of ABJDs in 2004, I was a fashion doll collector. I always wished they were more articulated, and gradually they did, but not soon enough! The size and price of ABJDs put me off for a year -- it would mean a whole new scale of clothes, accessories, props. But when I let the first one in the door 6 years ago, they sent the vinyl dolls packing.

    17. This one is simple. My friend got a 1/6 "Who's That Girl" boyfriend Yamato doll... and I thought it was the most interesting thing I'd ever seen. That lead me to searching for other customizable dolls, which lead me to Obitsu... which lead me to Junky Spot and allllllll the pretty resin dollies there!

    18. I blame my competitive personality. I had seen ABJDs and had wanted one for a few years but just never thought I'd have the money for one. Then someone I had a passing acquaintance with got a doll without knowing anything about them and it sparked me to say "you know, if they can get one then why can't I?" so I started researching them again.

    20. A girl on LJ some years ago posted an "omg want" entry about an AR Kai [Prode of Jocker, to be precise]. I ogled him for a while, made faces when he was sold out, then forgot about it for a while. Then two or three years later I was discussing embodying some of my characters with a good friend of mine and discussing what type, when one of said characters reared her head and went "No, look up something like that Kai doll you were after." The rest is history.

    21. The first moment? That would have to be at the Con that I got my two at. I got to actually see them in person and found my girl. She was perfect and after two days of staring at her, I just gave in and bought her.

The reason I got back in recently is a little different. I fell out of interest with them for a little bit because I was moving appartments and then I was helping to care for my mother who had cancer. I got back into them because I started to use them as art models. They were perfect for it and I remembered how much fun it was to ress them up and model them.

    22. ebay!
I was making and selling Tonner and Gene OOAK fashions on ebay and stumbled across a listing for one of the Dollmore Models (Ipsae or Eve, one of the two) I thought they were gorgeous! Like giant fashion dolls only better :)

I had come across BJDs in my collecting before from time to time and seen articles about them, but they didn't appeal with their stylized faces and child-like bodies. When I saw the Dollmore girls I started to research a bit more and found that there were lots of BJDs that fit the aesthetic I was looking for, with more realistic features and mature bodies :) I dipped my toesies in the water with a big Obitsu, then a DD, then my first big resin girl... I was just looking on dollmore the other day at the model dolls thinking that they got me started in the hobby and I still don't have one of them, LOL.

As of right now I'm "doll-sitting" the BJDs she has while she goes to study abroad.. I'm afraid to say I'm slowly getting more interested and attached to them :sweat often using them for my photography and such

    32. I saw them at cons and honestly thought they were a little creepy. Recently, my friend got into the hobby and met a bunch of people at a meet who became my friends as well. They were determined to induct me officially since I came around often and even went to meets without owning a doll. They got me a doll as a group gift and now I know its only a matter of time before I have another one.

    34. the source of the blame for my hobby/addiction lol would be my roommate/best friend's fault. I write stories and try to picture the characters in my head and she happened to be looking on Dollzone's official website and I glanced over out of curiousity and fell in love with Dollzone's Fei sculpt because it was how I actually pictured my main character. lol ^_^. then about two years later she actually bought him for me as a gift and then the $$ in my wallet began to disappear as I began to buy more of them.....now I own 10 bjds and want more still so I totally blame her >_<0

    35. I guess my interest in action figures combined with writing. It all started when I first saw Obitsus (the 30 cm OT ones) and Volks Dollfies (again, the 30 cm OT ones) in a Manga and Anime magazine. I was like "way cool - DIY action figures!" and decided to get one to turn it into my then current story's protagonist. Got one from Volks (three now) and also, came across the resin BJDs there. Liked them but not enough to really want one. But I decided to save up money so maybe, one day, I could get on cos they were pretty cool, too. Then, I came across Unidoll Ark and - wham! Got him and that's how I got into BJDs. I might have come across them anyways at some point but what originally got me into them was the "DIY action figures". :D

    36. I didn't really get into BJD until I found my second and third dolls. I had one, and wasn't entirely sure what to do with it now that I had it, and wasn't certain of getting another. Then I had a look around and found Raphael and Mars on Buddydoll's website and was shocked. They were Lief and Cain! My characters! In doll form! I had to have them!

And from then on it was a downhill slope. Characters (mostly from a fantasy story I have set in the 1930's prohibition era) seemed to crawl out of the woodwork left and right and suddenly I had action figures of my own characters and it was AWESOME. And I knew I was hooked.

I saw these types on tv once on a show that documented anime conventions.... saw three BJDs (ofcourse at the time i didn't know what they were called, because I missed when they said so on tv) on it and had to find them because they were absolutely cute! A few weeks later and I found them on Ebay because I have a weird habit of searching random stuff on ebay :D

    39. I fell in love with ABJD's while attending a huge doll convention in Orlando Florida. While at the show I came upon Val Zeitlers vending table. I had never heard of BJD's before so I didn't know what they were when I saw them but I knew they were the most incredible dolls I had ever seen. They were dressed in the most unbelievably awesome fashions. It was instant love. Although intimidated by my ignorance of these stunning and unique dolls I worked up the nerve to asked her if she was selling them. At the time I didn't realize Val was selling the costumes she designed but not the dolls themselves. Kindly she replied "For the right price she would sell one". I wish I could say I bought one that day but I'm still chasing that dream!

    44. It sounds silly, but I blame the local girl who was walking down the street holding a 1/3.

I had seen BJDs before, but only photos online. I hadn't realized they were so big. When I saw her walking across the street while we were parked at the cross walk holding this large doll in her arms, my interest was immediately spiked. I'd always thought they were just fancy barbies, but seeing her with her large, detailed doll made me look them up and after that, I really wanted one.

My mum saw him (and his girl) at a local doll show and told me about this amazingly beautiful doll she saw. I went with her to the next one hoping he would be there. He was and he let me hold her. I was like WOAH! :o and nearly dropped her! D: and then I knew I wanted one.

    50. If I may humbly follow in the way of Bandersnatch, I point my finger to LaDoncellaDelBosque. She handed me a book to read that mentioned Volks. I wanted one after looking at their webite, but couldn't afford one, of course (I was like 12 or something lol). Only recently (At the ACen BJD panel) did I discover more affordable ABJDs, which just deepened my interest. But I wouldn't have gone to the panel if I hadn't already been exposed to ABJD.

    51. I'd have to say it started with custom ponies, roundabout as that sounds. I first saw early Dollfie Dreams and a couple other dolls linked on the site I bought my pony hair from. At the time, no particular mold caught my eye (especially not the DDs; this was in the painted-eye-only phase), but the idea intrigued me.

Then Danny Choo posted pictures of his DD Saber. Those open eyes made all the difference! I started researching dolls like crazy, though it took about five months for me to really commit to the idea of getting one. The release of DD Fate T. Harlaown was my tipping point; that head is still pretty much my grail doll, though I've come to prefer the Nanoha version faceup on it over time.
