What single thing can you blame for getting you into BJDs?

Aug 18, 2011

    1. I have always had dolls, when I was little it was Barbie, middle school and high school I collected porcelain dolls, but bjds.....I blame Deviant Art. I saw one when I was 15 and thought very pretty but too expensive then. But now at 23 I re-discovered them on Deviant Art AGAIN! It was a Angell-Studio Limited Edition Sherry doll and I had to have her. I ordered her and now I am waiting for her to arrive!

    2. i had doll phobia so i wasn't so happier about bjds in first place
i Remember first time i saw a bjd, i was a little scared but also think it was amazing too watch her play with the doll but i was too scared too hold it.
my girlfriend start at school, she makes some new friends how has bjd dolls. she starts too talk a lot about too get one. i was scared so i say she could have one and i respect that, but i dont understanding why she will use so many money on this.
after she get her third doll i was in love, i couldn't stop look at it, and i wasn't so scared, i try too hold it, play with it, and i was so happy. my girlfriend ask me about "do you want a doll"
      i wasn't sure...when i see iphehouse eric...i was sure...yes i want a doll...

im so thankful too the bjd hobby too get my doll phobia gone, it comes some times, but not so often any longer :)

    3. I'm a life-long doll person and a garage kit sort and all-around otaku, and I used to look through Hobby Japan. I saw an ad for the very first Super Dollfies, and I thought they were quite lovely, very evocative of antique porcelain dolls, but I was a financially-strapped college student at the time. Some years later, I was ordering 1:6 customizable doll kits from Japan, including from Volks. They used to put flyers in the packages back then. Oh my gracious. Tohya and Isao. They didn't look like the sweet little girls I had seen in Hobby Japan all those years ago. It was all downhill from there. ^^; I started getting wigs and eyes with the plans of getting a Volks SD13 Link for my first doll (I really, genuinely didn't know there were other companies at the time), and ended up with an Isao head instead.

      So. It's all Volks fault in my case. ^^;

    4. I encountered Marina Bychkova's Enchanted Dolls on Tumblr. I had seen ABJDs on the net and thought they were pretty, but I absolutely fell in love with Enchanted Dolls. Finding them made me realize how much I loved dolls in general.

    5. My interest in BJDs went something like this:
I became interested in my partner's anime figure collection -> I started my own figure collection -> I started looking in to DDs -> DDs led me to resin dolls -> Full blown BJD lover

Yep, now I'm hooked and I can't stop! I love this hobby, though. :)

    6. My youngest daughter wanted me to get a blank Pullip and do a custom faceup for her. I had only painted reborns, which are vinyl and use heat set oil paints, so I was looking on YouTube for tutorials and saw some of Andreja's videos and just HAD TO HAVE a Minifee like NOW.

    7. I blame my wife!

I'm a photographer and Carol is a doll collector.
I was taking photos of her dolls and thinking
"This could really be fun if they posed better"
I asked her if there were more poseable dolls
and she borrowed a pair of AoD 1/4 BJDs from
one of her doll collector friends. The rest, as
      they say, is history.

    9. I was never into dolls as a young kid, and when my cousin first introduced me to BJDs, I was skeptical...but then she got her DC Ada, and though that girl has since moved on I fell in love with the concept of BJDs. When the same cousin got her Mystic Kids girl last year, that sealed the deal - and my first girl arrived this February! So the single thing I can blame is lyssalynette!

If there is one thing that hooked me and kept me hooked, I'd have to say it was Pinterest. The more dolls you see, the more you open up to the possibility of buying one. A dashboard overflowing with them does just that.

    14. Dolls always creeped me out but one of my friends had a dream about doll and then she FOUND that doll online the next day she had never had dolls either but when I saw him I had this deep seeded NEED to have one too. I ordered Carter a week or so later and he is still with me!

    15. Dragon Con. That's where I first saw them, & also saw some Freedom Teller shoes. I'm such a sucker for little stuff!!! Always loved the American Girl doll accessories (not the DOLLS so much LOL). So when I first saw the BJDs in person I realized that they actually might be worthy of the miniature stuff I had collected over the years! and that was that....

    16. There was an article about them in a Shojo Beat magazine, back when I was in middle school and was obsessed with anime and manga. Of course, asked for one for Christmas and never got one. Mom bought me an obitsu, but I was pretty happy. Years later I re-entered the hobby, now a semi-financially responsible sorta adult. Probably bad coming back into it now seeing as I'm paying for college, but I make it work. :3

    17. I discovered BJDs through Pinterest about a year and a half ago. I came across a few while browsing, and I was captivated by the intricate detail and craftsmanship that went into those high-quality outfits. I admired them for a while, then sort of forgot about them. Then when I had just moved to Tokyo for my new job, I remembered them, and kind of randomly decided, "hey, I'm making my own money now, I think I'll get into this." (My rationale was that I've been slacking in my art practice, and these customizable dolls would be a good outlet.) Three months of feverish research later, I have two girls on the way.

So if I were to point to a single thing, I guess I would say "being an adult." :yawn(What better time to start playing with dolls, right?)

    18. I blame my niece. She had dolls that were characters in an ongoing story she's been writing since 6th grade (she's in grad school now, so I've been hearing about these characters for a lot of years). I liked her dolls, but wasn't ready to get one of my own, so she gave me an OT animorph cat for Christmas a couple of years ago and...well, she just had to have friends...and the store she came from had these breathtaking resin girls and boys. And they looked like they'd be such fun to dress and photograph...and I got my first resin doll a year ago October. I've now got three and a fourth on the way, but I'm stopping there for a while - at least until their story is fleshed out more and their rooms are created. Yeah, she's got a LOT to answer for.

    20. I blame the people (Yenna and Pepstar) who posted beautiful pictures of their dolls on DeviantArt. Once I learned more about them, I discovered that they came with many potential artistic opportunities. I started by trying to craft my own, followed by purchasing one later on. I'm so glad that I found this hobby. It has reignited my passion for sewing, knitting, photography...(the list goes on).

    22. Two successive roommates. The first (who I no longer get along with for various reasons) kept taking notice of them at conventions, and talking about getting one to customize, but didn't really look into it beyond that. I thought the idea of customization sounded fun, and even bought a couple of OT playline dolls to experiment on (never actually got around to it, though), but I was way too poor to get into things like that at the time, and let it slide.

The second (who I'm still on good terms with) was also a frequent "table neighbor" for me at anime and comic conventions, where we both sold comics, original art, and various crafted items. Since we both sew, that roommate suggested we use our tax returns for the year to pick up a couple of dolls to use as models, and sew clothes to sell for them. She's also the one who found me my first doll, so she's the one who takes the vast majority of the blame, though the idea had been sitting around a bit since the first one.

    27. The BL series Hybrid Child *snorts*. I still feel so horrendous that I didn't shell one of the characters and made them my first doll (I was too overwhelmed by the prices of these dolls when I just started out, so I made very regrettable decisions with my first doll lol.)

That certain character is going to be shelled as a Baby Delf sometime next year, at least to commemorate the 1st year anniversary of me getting into this hobby :')

    28. My daughter.

She was a collector - has about 10. She got me interested in making clothes for them and let me borrow one of her 'lessor' girls (headless of course - so I didn't screw up its face).
That didn't last long. If I wanted to do photos for my Etsy shop I had to go to my daughter's - so I could have her add the head and wigs and do all the posing. I wanted to be able to do photos when I wanted to...
I really liked her Iplehouse JID Tatiana and wanted a beautiful girl of my own - so I chose a Benny.

    30. My doll artist friend sent me a picture of an all porcelain bjd made by a Russian artist that she had met in New York years before. The doll was gorgeous and was selling on Ebay for $40,000 at that moment!!!! I was so enthralled by that doll that I spent literally every waking moment on the internet researching everything I could find on that type of doll. It was about a month later that I bought my first resin bjd!!

    32. It was more complicated than this, but the single event that tipped me over the edge was having a huge yard sale in which I somehow came out with $300. *_* Before then I never thought I would really have a BJD, and I had forced them to the back of my mind for several years, lol.
Now that I am so into this hobby I feel less bad about the prices and am able to prioritize and budget a bit more, because I realize why they're so expensive, and I know they bring me a ton of creativity and social opportunities and happiness :whee:

    33. I found them by accident at Youmacon in 2011. Mint on Card was there, and at first I was absolutely terrified. I have a fear of statues and mannequins so for a while I avoided their table as much as I could. Slowly though, I found them growing on me, and on the last day of the con, having bought nothing else I bought my Doll Love Evol.
I figured I would just have the one, and maybe get one tiny. 20+ dolls later I am still collecting, and loving this hobby!

At a convention that had a panel (and a local BJD group/forum) happening there, I ended up researching and being excited at how pretty they were compared to the dolls I had as a kid...but like a total newb I flinched at the prices, now I'm so close to saving up for my first one so I have to say that I have way too many expensive hobbies thanks to conventions

    38. I can't actually remember where I saw my first BJD, but about a year after I started saving up for one, my interest had waned a bit because it was so difficult to find male dolls that weren't limited (or really really childlike, which isn't my preferred style of doll.) I recall basic dude dolls not really being a thing yet. There were quite a few trans mods, but I didn't feel like I had the skills to risk something that ambitious on a doll that cost that much.

I found the awesome hobby blog "Blastmilk" during a search for 1/6 Dollfie resources, and the owner, Kallisti, had just placed the order for her doll Fifi. I remember it pretty vividly because of all the beautiful clothes she was sewing for her and her enthusiasm for Fifi's arrival. I was always too shy to say hello, but seeing the photos of that particular doll once she was home really sealed the deal for me and I started saving again in earnest.

At the time I didn't know who or what I was saving for, exactly, but I have those two to thank for my taking the plunge.

    39. "Nameless", Visual Novel.

I blame Crobidolls on this, in other words. The moment after I played the game I had to Google the dolls there and after seeing the pictures... Well, I was a goner. There was no chance for me to resurface. I started stalking the web for dollies, found many other companies and saved money like it was for a life surgery. Now, I'm a proud owner of two boys which I admire for their detail and beauty.

    50. My memory isn't 100% on if this was truly the first time, but the earliest I can remember was seeing photos of them in someone's signature on Gaia Online. I went to check out the source of the picture because I thought it was so beautiful and I was curious, and ended up finding myself on Dream of Doll's site and totally fell in love with these kinds of dolls. I ended up looking up other BJD company sites too and I would bookmark dolls, wigs, eyes, outfits, anything that looked like I could use for my OCs haha... and since then I never forgot about these beautiful dolls. So many years later I finally learned how to save up enough money so I could actually start collecting them!

    58. After watching the anime Another, they had my interests but it died off. Then one of my friends showed me a collection of her own BJDs that were made to look like her novel characters. Me being an author/graphic novelist myself, i instantly became obsessed. I wanted to see what my precious characters would look like for real(well, as real as it can be). But it became more than just my characters. These arent just dolls... Barbies are "dolls". Bratz are "dolls". Dolls are typically soulless. One thing ive learned about BJDs, is they have just as much character and soul as the wonderful people that own them- i guess thats because theyre not just toys, but something the owners are passionate about. I dont yet own one, and im already passionate about them! I love hearing the stories of how people came across them and the stories of the character in the dolls themselves. Theyre truly the most beautiful things ive ever laid eyes on!

    60. I have always been a doll collector. When I was 14 I watched a music video of an artist named Kerli and in her music video she had the most amazing doll I had ever seen. Now being a doll fanatic I just had to know what these dolls where. I got sticker shock with a nearly $2000 price tag. But soon I could not help myself and I started to do some research. Pretty soon I learned about the maintenance of these dolls and how they worked as well as what it takes to keep your doll looking new, and why you should not leave a doll in the sun. But I still could not afford one of these amazing dolls. I started watching a lot of YouTube videos of amazing doll people. Finally after four years of pining for one of these dolls I finally took the plunge and ordered a doll. Two years and eight dolls later I have never looked back.
