I love hearing about fun projects people are passionate about. Whether it’s doll plans, an outfit you’re sewing or putting together, something you’re sculpting, a photoshoot- tell me all about it! I’m currently in the process of making my Minotaur doll. I’ve had my favorite bulk head sculpture from Minoan age Greece 3D printed and I’ll be modding it to fit my dollshe body. I’m also having a realistic cow head printed, so I have options! The sculpture head will be painted and gold leafed. I’ll also be making him a miniature Ancient Greek lyre that matches my own! I’m also waiting for a good time to buy a Supia body and when I locate a head sculpt I like, I’m completing the partner for my doll, Roiben. She’ll be dyed green, and I get to make her wings! But that’s a little further down the line
That sounds so cool!! Like really, please post some pictures when it's doneLove the idea of gold-leafing the head, and the lyre! For me, I'm preparing for my doll to arrive- I'm almost done with a dress form in his measures, and then it's time to sew his robe! It's going to be inspired by those "rich widow" robes, so sheer with some fluff on the edges^_^ While I wait, I'm also looking at wig-making tutorials. I've done some yarn wigs before, but never a real one!
I have a few on the go, all for my first doll. (I'm not very good at finishing one project at a time, haha.) I've been sewing her some pajamas, knitting her a cardigan, working on a wig, and I got a little desk organizer from the dollar store that I want to refinish into a dresser for her. Gotta have a place to put all the clothes she's getting!
That sounds really neat! How are you doing the wig? I've always made headcaps using the head as a mold, so I have no clue how to do it without having the doll first>_<
I'd like to get my druid's Staff O' Doom made (shillelagh is the best cantrip and i will hear no argument otherwise), I'm just not quite sure how to go about it. Resin casting for the gem to resemble amber, likely, but whether i want to find a perfect stick or make one is up for debate. Also have some thrifted dollhouse furniture I'd like to repaint, right now it's all weird mismatched colors. maybe black with some gold embellishments?
I don’t have much work space where I live currently, but I’m working on hand sewing a dress for one of my dolls! I have all the fabric, embellishments etc. but I’m still working out the pattern on some other plain cloth.
I actually have a bit of a spreadsheet that I use to organize my projects. Currently, I only have three doll projects going on: Finish my pukifee's bedroom diorama. I've got the room itself built and painted, just need to paint the furniture and add the clutter décor. Upon arrival, do face-ups on my last two Resinsoul "Elemental" dolls. I have two already that are Water and Earth themed and I ordered two more (blank) for Air and Fire so they'll need to be worked on when they get home Getting things set for my D&D character. With FL re-releasing their Karsh, I'm finally able to get one and make my beloved character! I've already picked out who I want to do his face-up, his wig is in progress, but I have to wait to get the body before I can get his clothes commissioned (it's a complicated outfit... ). He means a lot to me so I want to make sure he's just right.
I’ll be sure to!! I’m very excited. I’m going to make some period accurate Mycenaean clothing as well. The lyre I have is a luthieros lyre of Aphrodite- I’m super excited to have a matching one with him! i had one bull head printed already but it ended up a bit too large- it’s the “bull’s head rhyton” from the palace of Knossos- there’s a website that provides a 3D model from the actual sculpture. I’ll be getting it reprinted this week in a smaller size, in addition to my cow head! Very very excited. I LOVE those widow robes- that’s going to be so beautiful! And good luck with your wig making excursion! I’ve never been great at it myself, but it’s still super rewarding even when they didn’t turn out perfect!
That's exactly how I'm doing mine, haha - she's currently sitting on my desk in a protective cocoon so I don't accidentally get any glue on her. I don't have any experience making sewn doll wigs myself, but I know there are tutorials out there!
I've been working on a rhinestone night life/club outfit for two years that I desperately want to finish. The stoning is all done, the outfit is put together but it needs some finishing. I'm not sure if I need to stone the chain on it - 2mm rhinestones on tiny chain or if there's some easier way to make it work. But the stall out on this being completed is UGH @Milkteeth17 - my wife has a Sei-Tenshi whose faceup and wing painting is inspired by Minoan art. She doesn't have a proper Minoan outfit sine she's tiny, but she does hold a snake in each hand!
I'm in the process of making a 1760s robe a la francaise ensemble. Not just the dress, but underwear, accessories, shoes and wig in a period-ish hairstyle. I've finished the underwear, and am now working on the outer petticoat and fluffy trims.
OMG If you have any pictures, PLEASE send them my way!! Minoan and Mycenaean Crete are part of my biggest special interests! I was just talking to my partner about Minoan makeup recently. That’s so neat!!
Mi ne are all "ongoing" because I'm the king of the UFO when it comes to projects. I have a "Victroian Family" of ten SD sized girls (and five boys) who are waiting for me to finish their gingam dresses (each one in their signature colour) Spoiler ... and likewise their Victorian bathing costumes (again, each in their signature colour) Then there are numerous others... Teddy
Oh wow, nice! That's really cool, I've always admired period accurate clothing, but it seems too complicated to me>_< can't wait to see the results if you post them @Teddy I like the colour coordination! How did you decide who has which colour? Also the sleeves on that first dress are beautiful
I have a lot! The biggest one coming up is making a moth girl with a Bobobie body, artist 3D printed off topic head, and dyeing them both blue. I've also got a lot of sewing lined up for my current dolls, including learning to get better at making formal jackets.
Cool! I'm working on and English gown (for an OT doll). The smock and stays are made, the under petticoat just nees its waist tapes, the gown itself is about half made, an dthe petticoat to go with it is just a pile of fabric at the moment. Thanks! As to the colours - each doll has tended to gravitate toward certain colours as I' ve got to know them and their charcter has developed and those colours have become the signature ones that most of their outfits tend to fall into. Nettle (in the bathing costume picture), for example tends to lean toward pinks, but I'm not fond of pink so I steer her towards more lilac./lavendar/mauve shades instead, Some of them are harder to pin to a specific colour. Cressida gravitates toward white or pale coloured fabri cs with tiny pastel floral prints, rather than a particular colour, but she's hapy enough wiht the pale/light blue's Iassigned her back when there were only seven gilrs and they mostly conformed to the seven colours of the rainbow... The latest three girls to join the family put paid to that but beige, black and teal happened to be their colours so that worked out OK. Teddy
I'm currently in the middle of a 1/3 victorian-inspired couch project (that I've been posting about elsewhere on the forum), and I'm also planning on starting a 1/3 scale arcade cabinet based on this human-scale blueprint. There's also a bunch of DD clothes I started sewing and still have to finish, including a sailor-style dress and two different jirai blouses, but who knows when I'll get to those That sounds like it's gonna be absolutely gorgeous, are you planning on posting it when it's done?
So many cool projects! I'm starting a new character doll, making G'raha Tia from the video game Final Fantasy XIV. I don't have much done, so my to-do list is quite long. Outfit, staff, tail, and faceup still to do!
I'm currently in the process of doing an elf ear mod on my resinsoul tang, I finished sculpting the ears into him, and now I just have to sand and color match (first mod ever ^^') then I'll be doing his faceup
Thank you! I'm a sucker for the Volks F-17 sculpt. @Inari I love elf ear mods! I hope yours goes well! I'd love to see them once they're all done! I've only done a few, still pretty new to additive mods, but I loved it.
I went to Jo-ann’s this weekend, so now I have a few more plans! I’d like to make a dressing gown for my resinsoul lan with some nice sheer blue fabric I got, and a waistcoat for my dietrich with some black spider lily brocade!
Currently, I am waiting on the doll I ordered in January to get home to me, so that I can begin shooting my BJD webcomic again. I have the summer short stories planned, but this doll is going to be in parts of it. I do my photoshoots by backgrounds and settings rather then in order, so I need the doll on hand. I hope he gets shipped to me soon, because I am in the mood to take some pictures and work on the stories.
Oh, you have the Blossom Boys, right? I remember you from Instagram! Did you make all the costumes for them?
I make most of their clothes. I have a few bought things tossed in every once in awhile, but I spend a lot of time making their stuff. I've been doing a huge sewing project lately, because my boys never seem to have enough clothes. lol
Finished a rainbow striped jean jacket for my 1/3rd crew. they're still arguing over who gets it. My 2 SDMs now both have an outfit each. I need to bring them to work to do a photoshoot on some outdoor sculpture. Last but not least the doll room is getting an upgrade to all Ikea Blaliden black cabinets. These are mostly for OT dolls but with the Barbies out fo the way the DDs and Smartdolls can have more floor space for their tea set up.
For years I wanted to do a Maria from the Webtoon Cursed Princess Club doll cosplay. A few months ago I finally finished her and sewed her outfit. It was nice to have her done, but does anyone else feel post project underwhelmed? I feel like a lot of these projects I take more joy in the process rather than the end goal, which, as cheesy as that sounds, still leaves me feeling a bit unsatisfied.
Congratulations on completing the outfit!! I bet it looks amazing! Yes, I know what you mean. If I finish up on a big project, even if it was a lot work and tiring, when I am done I am like, 'Now What?' and I feel a bit restless if not a little like I am missing something in my life at the moment. Here I was pouring this time and energy into something, and now I have nothing to pour it into. I try to give myself some little projects to not feel so aimless after a large project, maybe organize some doll clothes, or wash them down, or touch up some of the faceups, whatever I can do to occupy myself until I get back into a normal routine.
Wow - lots of fun projects!!! I’m working on the last British Naval uniform coat for my Master and Commander group (ca 1810). This one is for Lt. Pullings - he already has his undress uniform coat - now working on his dress uniform coat. Capt. Aubrey’s dress uniform and hat are already complete. Thankfully, Lt. Pullings doesn’t need a second hat! They were quite the nightmare to make. Here are Lt. Pullings and Captain Aubrey in their ‘undress’ uniforms - with Dr. Maturin and his sloth
I recognised them! I’m surprised as I normally don’t recognize characters. Myself l’m working on a crochet skirt 1950ies flair style, granny square jacket, reshaping baby onesie, reshaping baby slippers, Versailles dress is slowly moving. Not even talking about almost done sweater for my husband. Each project gets worked on depending on my mood. The skirt is no thought, just move the hands, granny squares are easy stopped any moment. Onesie, slippers, and dress need sewing machine but mine demanded retirement after about 45 years of faithful service. The new one should arrive tomorrow.
It's cool to hear about everyone's projects! Really looking forward to seeing them finished I am currently working on a NGE cosplay for two dolls. I still have to finish the wigs and touch up the outfits (and wait for some parts to come in) but I'm looking forward to seeing how it all looks together as it's been a lot of trial and error to get the plugsuits somewhere I now have way too much red lycra so I might as well throw in another cosplay project right after haha
I think l can finish the granny square jacket in time for the Birmingham con. Have 30 squares out of 60-70 that l need and can do 5-10 a day while watching tv. Then a day or 2 to join them all, make trimmings, add buttons. I wanted the skirt ready for that but had to unpick about 2/3 of what l had done already so no hope now. It’s really time consuming because it goes wider and wider with every row. Will probably take a few months. The sewing machine arrived, had it set up and l’m very happy how it works. The onesie and slipper projects will be done soon, just had some chores to finish first.
Ok! 1/3 size doll, colours of the jacket blue and wine red, with white grid and buttons. Yes! But it’s inevitable when you make something without a pattern, just from the gut feeling. Had to acknowledge sooner that there was a miscalculation but l kept going till it was worse. Could have saved a few days or weeks of work for nothing. It will be natural linen lace with Baltic amber beads. I already have a shawl and a hat made. Hat still needs some kind of ribbon around it and l’m thinking if l can somehow make it using the same amber beads, they are irregular chips with holes, very natural and beautiful.
Some of the mentioned projects happily completed! A pillow case 15x15 cm. Got the printed fabric, made a bag, added the gold trim and tassels: IMG_8540 by Ilona Lablaika-Williams, on Flickr Baby onesie to worker’s overalls: IMG_8531 by Ilona Lablaika-Williams, on Flickr IMG_8532 by Ilona Lablaika-Williams, on Flickr Granny squares for the jacket all done and pinned on a kitchen towel for counting: IMG_2112 by Ilona Lablaika-Williams, on Flickr Baby slippers made slightly smaller: IMG_8533 by Ilona Lablaika-Williams, on Flickr IMG_8536 by Ilona Lablaika-Williams, on Flickr
I'm mentally fortifying myself to start painting this guy - a hare that I've printed from a 3d model (it's called "The Fabled Hare" and it's completely free!)
Thank you! Not much of my achievement as they were ready made real baby slippers from shop. Had to get them because the other doll has ugg boots for chilling at home, also baby booties and slightly too big, but that's the thing with ugg boots, they are meant to be clumsy and ugly.
@AllSmokeAndMirrors Looks so good! How did you get the wrinkles to look so realistic on the hemming on the denim overalls?
Thank you! It’s not a real denim although looks very convincing. Look at the picture one up, that’s the same overalls from the inside, it’s some kind of towel like jersey. Very soft and draping. I didn’t change the hem, only reduced the width starting from under arms and inside legs.
I'm styling an outfit for an upcoming golf event. I don't sew but I love to decorate, customize and style their outfits, props, etc. Her look is more vintage elegance with a green parasol, white gloves, embroidered skirt, and saddle shoes. It's a happy accident that everything came together so well. I plan to post photos this week on my Instagram @mia.bj.doll
I'm trying to shell my FFXIV character onto a Asai 70cm body and have a 3D printed head to go with it. I'll have to dye the body the along the color of the head of course. After that would still need quite a few things for him.
He is the bestest boy! I haven't done too much work on him, but he kinda looks more like him now. I'm excited you're going to make your WoL! Best of luck with your resin dyeing!
Yeah he really is looking more like himself now I'd love to see him when he's done. ^ ^ Also thank you I hope I can do him justice!
Finished 2 fans today. The fans themselves are finished but are part of a bigger project. The yellow one is for Marie Antoinette style dress and the red one - for kimono. I did the painting only, fans were ready made. IMG_2191 by Ilona Lablaika-Williams, on Flickr IMG_2189 by Ilona Lablaika-Williams, on Flickr
I'm assembling a Fern (left) to go with my Frieren (right). The next project is to 3D print her hairpiece and staff. If anyone hasn't watched Frieren btw, give it a go. It's absolutely epic. In my photo they're recreating the infamous potion for dissolving clothes scene.
