So I've been wig shopping for my pre-ordered MSD, and I'm not sure whether it'd be best to get long free-flowing hair or long hair in a big updo. I had some issue with my last doll, a LittleFee, with keeping her wig on. Even with a wig cap the wig would pop right off. Eventually I glued it to the wig cap, but given that it was a wig that came with a FairyLand full set, that solution did not make me happy in the least. I don't want to have to glue any more wigs to wig caps. What type of wig have you had the least problems with? That you can play with your doll without having to worry about their wig popping off? Long hair, big updo, short hair, etc? Sadly the wigs I first chose are out of stock, but these this is an example of the types I was looking at (mod, please let me know if this isn't allowed), and debating between all hair up, or having an updo with long hair down as well:
The fit of wigs varies from brand to brand, some have more stretch than others. I’d recommend a silicone wig cap or moleskin (the kind you can find in drugstores that’s peel and stick)
Yep, I do use a silicone wig cap for each doll. Though my experience with the FairyLand full set LittleFee Cygne left me wary. Even with the cap, if I moved her even a little, her hair would pop right off. I was showing her to my friend's parents and they were awwing at her, right up until her hair went flying off. Definitely ruined a bit of the immersion. I'm just not sure yet if style of hair matters at all to how well it stays on, so if anyone knows, please let me know too. I'm torn between updo+long hair and large updo with no hanging hair.
Well, putting aside the individual fits of different brands....I'd say that long hair tends to fall off more than short hair because of the weight of the hair itself. Sometimes it will just slowly sliiiiiiiiiide back off a doll's head. Or they will sit on the ends of it and there it goes. Or your finger gets caught in a long strand and there it goes again. I love long wigs though. Heh. Short wigs can be more fuss free to keep untangled and if the size is good for your doll, often are pretty good about staying on. Though you might end up styling bangs out of eyes more often. Pre-styled wigs do take more maintenance just because there is a certain amount of playing the "don't knock any hairs loose from the style" game. Especially for very elaborate wigs like your examples above. Also, an elaborate updo might still be fairly heavy and more unbalanced on a doll's head, making it prone to slipping still? Not sure. I haven't had too many issues with wigs absolutely refusing to stay on heads. For my own purposes, I tend to have my dolls wear a more standard "unstyled" wig day to day, and will pull out styled wigs only for photos shoots or special occasions to help keep the fancy styles safe and also dust free. For your LittleFee, was it possible that the silicone cap made the fit of the wig too small? Sometimes if wigs are too small they pop off the doll's head. I've never had that type of doll though. But if it was a fullset, I'm surprised that the wig didn't fit! My one Fairyland girl who had a wig with her fullset, the wig was a snug fit and had very little stretch in the cap.
You could be right--the wig kept popping off before I got a wig cap, even. FairyLand must have made it a little too small for her head. It sounds like an updo might be better than long hair, if the center of gravity is more toward the center of the head. Updo+long hair example:
Velcro. Most of my dolls have long wigs and yes they are hard to stay on. Few are ancient styles like you showed. I prefer velcro over silicone because I have few used silicone and they still slide off! A strip on front and a strip on bottom back, and its stuck on pretty good.
There are pre-cut velcro strips with a sticky back that allows them to adhere to the headcap - use the side with the grippy teeth, so they can hold onto the fabric of the inside of the wig cap. For extra security, you can adhere the other side of the strip to the inside of the wig cap, and they'll stay put.
yeah, i’ve seen some people use hot glue (easy to freeze off) or like elmers school glue (white glue, easy to wet and then peel off) to secure the velcro.. Or double sided tape, or they get velcro that has adhesive on the back already. basically whatever you’re comfortable with, since you’ll have to attach it to the wig too... ? i don’t use the velcro method but I have a friend who swears by it, i prefer silicone wig caps or if somethings being very persistent, i put a bit of eye putty/poster tac under the wig to keep it in place. i usually only do that with hard caps because they’re what i have the most trouble with, and putting a bit of sticky putty (like it’s usually only a small amount i need, waaaay less than you’d use for eyes) in the center of the cap or near the front keeps it from going anywhere! fun story, i saw someone once mention they used magnets for their bigger hair styles..... whatever works i guess?
I've always found it more to do with the doll head than the wig - some of my dolls seem intent on ejecting whatever wig I put on them, some of them even pop off the silicone caps, other dolls have no problem with either wig or cap. My LittleFee PongPong is forever popping whatever wig she's put in, for example, make or type seems to make no difference, and the silicone cap won't stay on either. The same goes for both my DollsTown Alinas. I have found, however that skin-on wigs are harder to keep on dolls in general, even with silicone caps under them, they tend to slide right off., and with synthetic wigs they cling to the cap better (depending on brand and construction of the cap), although if the company's wig sizing comes up smaller, it seems more likely to pop off than if it's larger. I've not really had issues with longer vs shorter wigs, that seems pretty random. I've had updo wigs, long wigs, and short wigs that all exhibit a tendency to pop off the doll. Teddy
Thank you everyone! I've decided I'll get the style of wig I like most, regardless if it has long hair or an updo. I've got a silicone wig ready, so whenever I get my doll and the wig, I'll see if it works. If not, I think I'll try that self-adhesive velcro idea. I wonder if it's the LittleFee heads, or just our specific LittleFees being naughty.
No. I use adhesive backing. I have a favorite velcro strip that I use for my dolls. The velcro has really strong adhesive and its thin enough that it doesn't bulk up the wig from underneath. I just finally ran out of a really long strip I had and need to find some more soon for my incoming dolls.
I always use a small round dot velcro near top of the head to keep wigs in place, they work a lot better than silicone caps I’ve had!!!
One solution I've found is a fringe benefit (no pun intended) of so many dolls now having magnets on their heads for accessory parts--a small magnet can disappear very nicely under the wig fibers, while being plenty strong to stop that wig from going anywhere at all! One of my girls has a magnet keeping her wig on, and even though it's a tiny bit loose and very long and heavy at the back, it doesn't move one bit unless I want it to!
In my own personal experience, the updo style wigs are harder to keep on than short or long because the center of gravity is on top of the head and if the head tilts enough, it throws off the balance and the wig falls. With long hair, it's pulling down on it over the head and stays pretty good, except maybe if you're flipping the doll upside down...though I have had some good wigs stay on even through that! I usually use a silicone wig cap, but sometimes I use hot glue and draw a few rings around the head/headcap to give the wig something to grip onto and not slip as easily. I have used velcro, but I've had that cause some snags to the wig, and I don't like using it.
This is what I was worried about with the updos, thank you. If I get an updo and it refuses to stay on, I might consider the superglue+silicone cap technique again.
I use hardcap wigs, unfortunately they need to be made specifically for the doll in question. Sometimes I put a tiny bit of eye putty in there, but they don’t move at all after that.
Hi guys I realise it's an old thread but thought maybe someone will be able to give me some advice. I recently bought 2 dolls from someone and when they came I noticed their whole head caps are covered with a moleskin. When I contacted the seller she said that she glued the moleskin on for the wigs to stay on but my question is is that a proper way to do? I only use silicon caps and I'm scared the glue will destroy the resin... also I didnt bond with one of them and will probably sell her in future should I remove it or sell the doll with it? Any advice is appreciated
Why? It's no different to gluing suede or moleskin into the joints to help them hold a pose better. People have been doing that for years without damaging the resin so why would the headcap be any different? For that matter, any doll with magnet hands and feet or other part (or magnets to hold the head cap on) has glue holding the magnets in place too. Teddy
like teddy said, the glue will be fine. if you’re really worried and want to remove it, you can ask the former owner what type of glue they used so you know how to remove it, but really like teddy said it’s no different than moleskin sueding in the joints, or even hot glue sueding. all types of glue from super glue to hot glue to white glue to wood glue are often used on dolls, so as long as it doesn’t really affect the faceup or taking off the head cap, it’s fine. you could even put your silicone caps over it probably if you still prefer that! even Volks hot glues their eyes into their dolls (for whatever mysterious reason)
Actually - I might try gluing moleskin on some of my dolls' headcaps to see if it works for the wigs that silicone caps don't help with. Silicone caps seem to make very little difference when it comes to keeping Tibetan mohair (on the skin) wigs in pace - I sometimes resort to using white craft glue since it's easily peeled off when I want to chage the wig, but if moelskin helps that would be a preferable option. Teddy
Oh ok thank you so much that calmed me down a lot. As to how moleskin cap compare to silicone cap I noticed it does hold the wigs in place a bit better than silicone cap so most likely will leave it on. Thanks guys
That's good to know - thanks! Now I need to shop for some moleskin Glad you're feeling better about it on your dolls now. Teddy
I didn't see them mentioned, but I figured I'd share what I like to use to help keep wigs on. For larger dolls, I like to use rubber/silicone wrist bands/bracelets (like these). For all sizes, though I've never tried on anything smaller than a 6/7 head, I like to use rubber bands (like what you get for office supplies). Thicker ones are usually better, but you can also use multiple thin ones if you can't find thick ones (and even double a single one, especially for smaller heads).
