Materials What is the smoothest air dry clay?

Mar 10, 2012

    1. What is the smoothest air dry clay?

Or, more specifically, what air dry clay most resembles super sculpey?

After priming my doll's torso, there were some spots that I would like to fill in or make larger. I would prefer to just fill these spots in with super sculpey, as that's my favorite clay, but for obvious reasons, I can't put a primed doll into the oven to bake the clay.

I already own some DAS clay, but I find that clay is just to ruff, even after sanding and priming it.

So, any suggestions for air dry clay? I'm looking for something that comes smooth and is easy to shape, but can also stick to the primed doll. Am considering La Doll Satin.

Any help would be great! :)

    2. Another possibility would be epoxy clay -- Apoxie Sculpt, Amazing Sculpt, etc. It will definitely stick, and it's smooth. It's more 'floppy' than Sculpey, but if you're sculpting on top of something, that doesn't matter as much.

    3. I would like to add a question if you don't mind: which air dry clay has a neutral or natural odour? I've used DAS clay once because I wanted to sculpt something with a child, and it smelled really chemical. The kid repeatedly put a piece of clay to the tip of his nose and smelled it. I've bought another "no-name"air dry clay from a local shop here and it was smelly too.

Would be great if someone could refer to that aspects aswell. I also made similar experiences with DAS like Elizern has described...

    4. Thanks for the tip Morgan.

Looking up apoxie sculpt, it looks great, except for the price tag. :pout

Anyone have any experience with milliput? It looks like it might do the same thing...

      Really appreciate the help! :D

    5. I prefer Milliput over Aves actually, I started with Aves first and bought Milliput only recently. Aves is by far stickier and don't smooth as easily before it dries- Milliput is like silk comparatively. Now that said, if I was covering a big, rougher area I'd probably use Aves as I think it's less costly.

    6. LaDoll Premiere is very smooth, but it doesn't look like polymer clay. It's more of a matte finish. I'd vote for Apoxie or Milliput. Apoxie is less expensive.

Nike, La Doll regular or Premier have very little odor. A little bit of "wet paper" smell. Apoxie smells like stale tortilla chips. :)
