What doesn't count as BJD?

Apr 18, 2008

    1. I mean...I know the obvious.

I know for sure what does count, so I really want to know what doesn't?

It's more for discussion, and what is "allowed in forums" purposes, than anything philosophical. What about homemade dolls? Or OOAK remake dolls?
What about non-human jointed dolls, or dolls that have a wire frame and joint system, instead of ball joints?

I want to basically know how specific the discussion is here, so I don't end up asking help for projects of mine that don't fit into the topics here.

      For example:

Would I be able to discuss Precious here, and other projects like her?
She's a homemade jointed dragon doll, but she's built on a flexible wire frame.
She uses many of the same techniques and supplies involved in making more "traditional" BJDs...but she's certainly not a Dolfie.

So, does she and her brethren count enough to be discussed?

I thought this would be more of a discussion topic than a Help topic, which is why I posted it here.

Maybe others have had similar wonderings? Maybe there are other nearly-qualified dolls that have wanted attention, but have been too shy?

      What are your thoughts?

My only two pics of Precious:

    2. Personally i think some of the rules are a little ridiculous but im pretty sure that would be an anthro bjd. Im almost certain ull be able to post pics of her. Maybe under the section at the bottom for people who make their bjds. Anyways i wish u luck ^^

    3. I'd say your doll is almost certainly offtopic. Probably a better way to find out would have been to pm a Mod. :)

    4. I was hoping for some discussion, which is why I didn't just straight PM a mod or post in the help area. I figured talking about it was at least almost certainly allowed in this forum, after reading the rules about it.

Oh, and thanks for those links. I don't know how I missed those! >.<

    5. IMO the rules ARE ridiculous & petty, but them who pays the bills makes the rules, so ...

BUT I do want to say that Precious is awesome-!!!!! It's a pity she can't be discussed here, because she's a real work of art. At first I thought you were holding a real crow or raven-!

I do know where you CAN discuss & post photos of her all you want - & the other members will be delighted to have you: 13 Doll Dreamland, an adjunct forum owned by Junky Spot. Here's the url:http://www.13doll.com/forums/index.php In fact, 13D has a posting section/thread for nothing BUT other critters & creations. I'm a regular there & it's a good group, one of the smaller forums, very unpretentious & friendly - and aside from asking people to be nice, very few rules about what you can & can't discuss. Do go & check it out. Precious should have a venue to be discussed & photo'd. I'd love to see her there, & so would everyone else at 13D.

    6. Oh, and I want to say that I am in no way picking on the rules, or opening up discussion about the rules.

I was just wondering if there were others who were making dolls who might not be able to be discussed here, along with their traditional BJDs.

I figured there was some leeway here when it came to homemade dolls and anthro dolls, which is why I even bothered posting.

I'm planning on making dragons similar to Precious, but they will be both ball-joint and resin-made (as well as more traditional dolls). I was hoping that they would be able to be at least discussed here during their creation.

At least so I could get advice on construction and matierials, since they will be so similar in that area.

    7. DoA has always had a narrow focus on "Asian" BJD...I'm sure that many of our members work on projects that they know don't fit in with that vision, but even that isn't an on topic topic, if that makes sense.

      General rules area: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=31
Rules on what makes a doll "on topic": http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42407

To submit an artist's doll (as would fit your lovely raven) to see if they're on topic you need to contact a Mod or Admin. But since I'm reading this now, obviously I'll bring this up with the group.

Please also be sure to read the Artist's sub-forum rules here, especially since they were just recently updated on 3/1/08: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=198371

I'm an inactive Admin who tends to spend most of my time moving things to their "proper" locations and keeping the Marketplaces free of clutter, and I hate to admit that even I don't completely understand all of the rules for what makes an on topic doll on topic because I'm not always around when the rules are written. Just being honest here :D

Judging what's on and off topic is often incredibly difficult as it's admittedly subjective, to some extent, and we catch a lot of flak for that, as you can see from some of the comments made in this thread.

Gut reaction is that this won't be on topic because it's 100% anthropomorphic, but like I said, I will certainly make sure it gets discussed.

Even if this one doll isn't on topic, your work is lovely and I'd love to see what you come up with! DoA certainly isn't the only doll forum out there for BJD, but we do hope you'll want to be a member, regardless of what happens with this one work.

I do need to close this thread though since this doll will need to be judged on or off topic before it can get more posts.

And again, I'm a more inactive Admin and not often around to help out when it's really needed, but if you have questions, feel free to let me know.
