Sculpting [what do you use as a] Head base?

Jun 9, 2008

    1. What do you use to mold the head around? I want to try to make a wolf boy but I dunno where to start! Any tips? Suggestions?

    2. Aww wolf boy would be amazing... >: I really have no idea, to be honest. ; ; Good luck <3

    3. Tinfoil. It's great because you can just make a ball and pull layers of it away.
Leaves the inside a bit messy, but it's easy enough to smooth out with more clay later.

    4. Depends on what you're sculpting with. If it's sculpey, I believe the vast majority uses tin foil. If it's an air-drying clay, I'd recommend Styrofoam, since it's really easy to scrape out afterwards. Don't use styrofoam with anything you bake, though, because I can only guess it would give off some horrid toxic fumes. XD

Eager to see what you do with your wolf boy! :D Definitely awesome to see some more anthro sculptors out there. I've been wanting to make a "big bad wolf" doll myself, to go with my petite arctic fox girl, who would make a nice Little Red...

    5. I used a styrofoam sphere for my first head, as ilymandias says though don't use that if you're baking it

paper eggs/spheres would also work with paper clay (just don't use you clay too wet)

    6. I've found it to be extremely helpful to sculpt over an armature with eyes already attached. It saves a lot of frustration later. My current method is to slightly embed a pair of low-dome glass eyes in a strip of epoxy clay, wait for it to harden, make an inside-the-head shaped lump of tinfoil, and then use more epoxy to attach the eye strip to it.

Don't try this with acrylic eyes, though. ;)
