What are your favourite dolls to photograph?

Aug 8, 2009

    1. This thread is more intended for those who do photography as a hobby and those who have had the opportunity to photograph many dolls (doesn't really matter who they belong to). It's not limited to those who do, but I'm especially interested to hear the answers of those who have.

Which dolls are the best to photograph? Any particular favourites? What makes a doll good or bad for photography? Does the doll/dolls you like to photograph belong to you or someone else?

    2. I've photographed many of my friends' dolls and I have to say my Hound and my best friend's MNF Shu Shu are my favs. Hounds are very like real life fashion models...lanky, good bone structure and look good in almost anything. Any wig I try on him looks fantastic. I can take pictures of my Hound all day; the camera loves him. Shu Shus are just beautiful and their MSD size is really easy to work with. Shu Shus, like Hounds are also incredibly photogenic. For me I find that just like real people, lankier dolls with very prominent, sculpted features seem to translate better in photography.

    3. Some of my dolls are easier to take pics of than others, and often I can't even tell why that is--some just naturally seem to come out looking great while others take a lot more effort. My Ninodoll Anna/CH girl is very photogenic, as is my Bobobie Tony and Soul Doll Paris. Because I don't own my own camera, I don't get to take pics as often as I'd like, so I have dolls that I haven't photographed before--when I get the chance, it will be interesting to see who of that group likes having their picture taken.

    4. I love to take photographs (though they are not always the best and most of which I do not post anywhere). I have had the opportunity to photograph many many dolls. Some dolls are so awesome in real life, but just never look right in photos for me. I must say my favorites are the Elfdoll girls in very dramatic faceups (they all seem to just look so good in photos, even bad photos and even if I do not like them as much in real life) and Volks Luna (I have only taken pictures of her in her default faceup, but I love her default faceup and eyes...she just seems to glow).

    5. I love taking pictures of my dolls. Annaleigh/DOD E-an always photographs very well. My Pipos Dali takes wonderful pictures! However my Luts Zuzu Lio does not. The pictures can turn out cute but I think he's one of those 'looks better in person' dolls.

    6. Taking photos of my dolls is the main way I enjoy this hobby. :) Out of all of my boys, my Yugiri gets the most camera time, and I love taking pictures of that adorable grumpy face, though he can be a bit tricky since the sculpt has some bad angles as well. Probably the easiest photo subjects I have are my Sweet Dream Lucas, who looks gorgeous no matter what, and my Tohya one-off. They always look very pretty and dreamy and ethereal. Another favorite is my BW F16 because he is very fun to take pictures of since he always looks like he's in on a good joke, or is up to no good. :sweat

I'll also agree with freddiegirl - Hound is a very photogenic doll! I used to own one, and loved to take pics of him. He seemed to look good in everything I put him in, too. ^^

    7. Many of my Volks boys have many good angles, thus easy to photograph. Ladislas (Williams) looks good in just about anything.

Then Soom and DS Boys are excellent as well. I just love the profile of DS boys.

    8. Often dolls with sharp features tend to photograph well, my ex-SA Bermann looked good always and could wear a lot of different looks.

      Sabriell

    9. I think Riddick is most reliable of mine, when it comes to good photos, followed by Fitch. Both Dollzones - Riddick's a Mo and Fitch is a Xi-Aliester. Riddick almost always photographs well - usually smirky, but he can pull off other looks as well. Crow (Dolkot Day) sometimes will photograph just awesome, but at certain angles his wide eyes make him look surprised. Same issue with my MNF Shiwoo Kale. They all photograph well, though. Just Riddick is easier!

    10. My favorite dolls to photograph tend to be the ones with the most poseablity. I get bored with dolls that can't do much in front of the camera except sit for head shots. So bearing that in mind, my absolute favorite doll to photograph is my girl with the ShinyDoll Thaasa body. She has the greatest range of motion, and she'll hold any pose I want and stand there like a rock. I never have to use a stand or wonder if I'll have to stay close enough to catch her.
My favorite faces to photograph are my Supia Roda and my Mecha Angel Deneb because they have gorgeous bone structure and they are easy to light.
The dolls that usually inspire the most time spent with them in the studio are my Delf Shiwoo and my Dollstown Elysia because they have very versatile faces and bodies that allow for a lot of different and more complex interpretations.

    11. I agree with this. Dolls with chubby cheeks often don't photograph well unless the light's just right, their faces look flat.

My favorite face to photograph is my old F-27 and my favorite body is the SD16 girl body.

    12. My favorites to shoot are Elfdoll and Supia dolls. They can look so realistic and stunning at the same time.

My favorite of my own family is my Pipos Alice Jr. She's just adorable and at only 26cm she makes any shot and any setting just too easy. >w<

    13. I love to photograph my D.I.M Angelo twins...They are great models. Volks Reisner has lots of potential too...My SooRi's probably the hardest one to photograph but he looks gorgeous if I use the right amount of light and angle! :3
Lately my Heliots became an obsession though and they don't even have faceups yet. :P

    14. I have to say, at the moment, I prefer taking pictures of Evael, my Hound, but only when it come to portraits and face-shots. But Azakiel, my DoT Sha does share some camera time from me, since he can be very photogenic with good lighting and background.

    15. Out of my near 20-member brood (yes, I don't know how many I have) my favorites have always been Raziel, a MNF Seorin and my beloved Xia Li, a Bluefairy Kyle girl. A close third is Lithium, a DoC Tender Too.

Raziel photographs well because of his dynamic eyes compared to his black hair, and he's full body blushed and manicured for realism. Xia Li's stunning Ladious faceup looks amazing in pictures, where you can see the detail of the shimmer and eyeliner that is just brilliant.

Lithium has an enhanced default faceup, in which the pink was taken out and more gray punk-ishness was added. Combined with his spiky wig and cool sense of style, this kid takes cool pictures.

    16. Of the three I have, I seem to continuously lean towards taking picutes of my DOD H. Kirill boy. The other two are kicky and terribly hard to pose, so my Kirill takes way less work to get him to pose the way I want him to. His photos also just seem to come out way more smooth and unforced as the other two.

However, the Glati horns and hooves are way fun to take pictures of, no matter how hard it is to get him to stand.

    17. Personally, I don't have the choice, because for the moment I only have an Iplehouse Tatiana ^^
But I choose her in the way of photographing her, so I can say i'ts my favourite model.
I think that when we love a doll model, it's easier to work with it!

    18. From my crew, I'd have to say iiru (DM BIT Pado) and Lye (CP vamp lu-wen). iiru poses well, and Lye just comes out really well in photos.
But two of my guys don't have face-ups yet :sweat

The hardest would probably be Lulu since she's so tiny (13cm), but mostly because she's body-blushed. I take extra care not to rub her clothes against her to much or something of the like, so it takes longer to get a good photo of her opposed to the others.

    19. It seems as though it is a popular choice in this, but I also love photographing Dollshe boys. It is largely because the faces are so well-sculpted that there are few bad angles (the possible exception being a Saint's profile which look fearfully beaky without some very particular lighting, I find). They also seem to be be able to convey a range of expressions. They are absolute buggers to pose and mine won't stand unaided as they have very wobbly knees (and, yes, I have tried everything, with little result). However, once they have been strapped to their doll stands, their three part torsos do allow a very realistic range of movement.

    20. Ah. For me, posing becomes most important in PS's, but for portrait shots....

Girls -- the Elfdoll girls, if they're not done up too fashion-dollish, but given more realistic "makeup". They have wonderful head sculpts. CP Lishe, of course. Limhwa have beautiful faces, some of the Volks girls (although for other reasons/parts of them, I don't own either of these last two, so only get to take the occasional pic.)

Boys - El, most besottedly certainly, and Moon, and Woosoo and Shine, in fact, most of the CP sculpts are just great in photos, IMO. Then Iplehouse, Unidoll Real boys.

Minis - well, I love how Bluefairies work the camera, and minifees, although I'm partial to the more mature-looking or older head sculpts there, like El, Shiwoo, Lishe, and Carl.

To some extent, this kind of list is bound to be swayed by the dolls we love and respond to. That seems to make it possible to find the most flattering angle, to bring out that effect of them looking back at you intelligently and with emotion.

But from taking pix of dolls at meets, I've found just about every doll will photograph well, if you take a bit of time and several shots, even dolls that don't appeal to personal taste, and I've often been surprised at how much they'll "emote" or become extra beautiful for the camera.

    21. I simply seem to prefer realistic SDs for photography.

I ve already come to terms with myself that even my half elf wasnt realistic enough.

I prefer my zaoll and supia.
My supia seems to simply breath...
and my zaoll..simply is great at looking like she moves.

Also the fact that they seem to have bone structure in their faces <3
which i often miss with less realistic dolls.

    22. I haven't had a chance to photograph loads of other people's dolls as dollmeets are always on weekends.. and I work weekends.. ¬¬
Needless to say, I obviously love taking photos of my dolls, but I once took a few pics of a friend's Homme Ducan, and it was gorgeous. Sadly he's sold that on! ):
I've always wanted to photograph an Euclase or Heliot, they're so magnificent looking! XDDD

    23. it took me a long time to figure him out, but i love photographing my DM Kara Klum(s). as far as natural posing, they are just fantastic.

My B&G Sapphira is really easy to photograph. i love taking his picture because so many of them turn out well! <3

and after owning one, i totally get why Delf El is so freaking popular. its hard to take a bad shot of him XD he photographs beautifully!

    24. THIS! I cannot stop photographing mine. He's pretty much the only one I've been doing shoots with lately. *much grumbling of poor neglected boys and girls*

I also really like photographing my AA Er. He's a tiny bit loosely strung and I love him for it. He just...falls into poses perfectly without me even doing anything other than plunking him down on a horizontal surface.

For dolls that aren't mine, I have to say that I love photographing Dollshes, especially Hounds and Saints. People in a couple of local meetup groups have them and it seems like I just can't take a bad photo of any of them.

    25. I totally agree with this. My Soom and CP sculpts seem to photograph well from almost any angle, especially Beryl, Lishe, and Soo. My DIM Belita hybrid photographs beautifully as well. :)

I absolutely adore my Latidoll Adel, but because he has an asymmetrical smirky expression, he has to be photographed from very particular angles to look good. A straight-on front portrait makes him look like he has a facial muscle tic. But in person or photographed from the right angles, he is drop-dead gorgeous. :aheartbea

My DoT girl (a Tender E-an) was one of the hardest dolls to photograph well, at first. Her eyewell shape made it difficult to position eyes, and the eyewells were also deep-set, which made them light-sucking black holes in most photos. In the end, I modded her eyes a little by opening them up a bit and beveling them shallower. I actually ended up selling her to re-do the mods differently... but I missed her so much that I bought her back when the person who had purchased her from me put her up for sale again half a year later. ;) She may be tricky to photograph, but I adore her nonetheless.

    26. Agreeing with those who say El is wonderful to photograph - my two Els are as different as day and night, but it's very rare that I get a bad picture from either one of them no matter what I do. Of the rest of my crew, I find my Volks guys tend to photograph pretty well, and in particular my School A and my F-16 are very photogenic from just about any angle. Sharakti (my school A) is a bit of a challenge to photograph because of his wig which likes to pop off suddenly or else hang down and obscure his face, but when that's behaving itself he's just a joy to have in front of the camera.

    27. I started this hobby last winter and I couldn't wait until the weather was nice enough to take my dolls outside and photograph them in natural light and with natural backgrounds. That was fun for awhile, and easier with the larger dolls, but now I'm finding more versatility indoors with my tinies since I can use scrapbook papaer for backdrops and a zillion little things for props.
Generally my favorite models are my latests acquisitions, so right now that's a Charles' Creature Cabinet Momo (mole) and black and white Catsys.
The Catsys are a challenge because it is difficult to get the lighting right for both the white and black faces. Plus black Catsy has the slit-pupil eyes which look weird if I don't get them from just the right angle.
Generally, my greatest concerns are lighting, focus, and angle.

    28. I like photographing Luts dolls, they are in general Photogenic. However, somehow the resin on my Lishe is very hard to photograph, it GLOWS X_x I used to have a Delf Miyu too, but she didn't glow like he does....

    29. My fave model is Zaoll, she looks good from any angle^^

    30. Lovin the shots of my Dollfie Dream, even with her big oppai :)

    31. Oh wow, I've photographed quite a lot of different dolls. From my personal collection, my personal favorite to shoot are my Volks dolls. However, when I had a Volks Michele, he was so frustrating to shoot because I couldn't get the perfect angle or any good pictures... I wound up selling him so I could get a better camera (upgraded from a point and shoot Kodak to a Canon Rebel T1i DSLR).

But as for other dolls, I really love shooting Luts dolls -- especially Lishe. I love photographing Lishe dolls. Their faces, their mouths... they're so lovely and they translate so well to picture.

The hardest dolls to photograph for me? Unoa! I've tried with Lusis, Sist, L-bi and B-el, and they are all very difficult to capture.

    32. I really love photographing really realistic dolls, alot like iplehouse dolls i think they pose the best and make the best
      models :)

      x

    33. Out of all the dolls Ive owned, I have to say that my Volks SWD Nana photographs very well from most angles. The hardest doll for me to photograph? Probably Yo-SD's. I find it really hard to find to scale scenes to photograph them in.

    34. My Resinsoul Rong photographs the best... It's something about her... Almost every picture comes out perfect without any effort.

    35. I have a mini shushu and she's my top tier item on photography. But you account for the combination of my other BJD and my wife's dolls, I kinda don't have one any more XP

    36. Volks DD's and Azone PureNeemo's!

    37. @ chipmunkchen- Same here. Their posability is a good thing (difficult sometimes though). XD

    38. I haven't photographed anyone else's dolls so right now my favorites from my own collection are my Iplehouse bjds because of their realistic appearance. My JID Asa is at the top of my list.

    39. Nothing in particular as long as my favorite doll has her character dress, and the backdrop or the bokeh is really important for me there's a lot of factors to consider but mostly I shoot my dolls outdoors with colorful warm backdrops.

Owner or 2 Supia Dolls / Angell studio

    40. Currently my PukiPuki Ante is my fav to photograph, but my new LTF ante might give her a run for her money!

    41. My DM Kid is easier to photograph, mainly because she can pose, and that she's smaller than my SD.

    42. I love to take pics of my dreaming El since he looks sooo sweet in the pics. and I love my Black code no.2 in reality, but he always look angry in pics :( I made him hugging with my bear in the pics but still doesn't look happy, guess he doesn't like me taking pics of him...

    43. Though I'm still learning how best to use my camera, I find that my DoD E-An and my Soom MD Keny are the most photogenic of my dolls. Both of them are incredibly expressive and it's fun to take pictures of them.

    44. hello :) My favourite dolls to photograph are normal skin dolls and darker. I usually have trouble photographing white skin dolls as their skin tends to go a funny coulour in the pictures some times e.g. it can sometimes go green :S lol My very favourite doll to photograph at the moment is my Iplehouse Benny who has and ebony skin tone and she photograph's beautifully, the best doll to photograph in my opinion :)

    45. I have to say it would be my Hounds and my Lishe. Right on their heels are my Dz msd and my fairyland msd. They pose the best for me and thir faces express so much more when I can capture it( which isn't often)

    46. My favourite doll is photograph is my Souldoll. She isn't my best poser but I love how she was sculpted. She's all curves and little details. :D My Bobobie needs to be restrung so she doesn't get photographed as often. I also take a lot of photos of my first girl but she looks too serious in pictures for her character.

    47. My Iplehouse Emilia =D thats for sure

    48. My migidoll Jina :3 Poses like a charm and has a nice face of course

    49. My favourite doll to photograph is Tyler, my ResinSoul Mai. He poses really well and has a sweet face. The main reason he's my favourite to photograph is because the character is blind, so I have the added challenge of capturing his world from his perspective in my photos of him.

    50. Iple SID dolls, they pose great and look very realistic which is something I strive to capture when taking photos
