Sewing What are you currently sewing for your BJD Vol 14

Dec 15, 2020

    1. I think the thickness of that denim skirt actually looks pretty great, especially with the chunky shoes!

    2. I started a spring outfit for my Zaoll hybrid. I'd like to finish it and another one for my Dollmore Mio for before next spring. The aim is to take photos of my three oni girls together at next blossom!

Here the inner short kimono is sewed. I have the obi, a skirt and the outer kimono (or a haori) to make.

    6. Those are all amazing! I love the red belt on Puppy and the skirt decor on your Soom.

    7. I'm attempting to sew a SID-sized shirt for my large-chested Impldoll Star girl. I swear I've done this before, but I'm messing up every way you could mess up a shirt ^^;

      • x 2
    8. Shirts are so hard *cries in attaching sleeves*! Good luck @Captainnessbot !!!

      • x 3
    9. Have you ever tried the trick of attaching the sleeve to the shoulder first, then doing a single long seam up the side of the shirt and down the sleeve? So much easier, since it is all flat sewing.

      • x 2
    10. That's how I do it, and that's the easy part. It's attaching the curve of the sleeve's shoulder to the bodice's shoulder that I struggle with as it's quite fiddly in 1/4 scale (especially with fray-prone fabrics). I know I'll master it eventually but somehow it never goes quite the way I want it to *_*

      • x 1
    11. I managed to do it! My first time working with doll-scale elastic too! Ignore the black thread, this ended up being a test piece I enjoyed enough to make it the real piece.

      (Tights also made by me!)

    12. Have you tried using a running stitch/basting stitch in the sleeve shoulder and pulling it to gather, then pinning and sewing? I use a hand-sewing running stitch, it takes about the same length of time as using a machine and it's easier to pull the thread out when you're finished.

      • x 1
    13. Yes I have, it usually helps a lot! I know the tips, tricks and solutions to make sleeves easier, I just wanted to express my frustration with them being the fiddliest part of the garment regardless :)

      • x 2
    14. Oh I agree with you. I've just picked up a quartet of vintage "toy" sewing machines (two have bobbins, two are chain stitch) to see if working on a smaller sized machine with a hand crank will make that process less of a pain.

      • x 3
    15. - wow, these are some serious skills. I adore your outfits. <3

      • x 1
    16. Great tips! Putting together sleeves are a pain I agree! :)

    17. As for pinning and stuff - I bought a bunch of clips for fabrics - they can be attached to the very 2 mm end of the fabric and they are small enough to keep small pieces of fabric together. For sewing pieces together, especially when dealing with light fabrics like satin and tulle I think they are ideal. Tested them and now I can't live without them :D

    18. Guys... I did a Silly. *facepalm* Learn from my folly. Do NOT wait until you get to this point before finding out there is no more of the trim you're using anywhere in the White Trim Bin.

This is for my 1/5 DFH Xiao Chan, Clara. Her story is that she will be *one of the rotation of girls dancing the role of, heh, Clara in the Nutcracker, and will also dance some of the other roles, like Snowflake and Waltzing Flower.
(maybe eventually an updated version of the Arabian Coffee dance and Chinese tea dance, if I feel REALLY ambitious with my sewing, as those would require a lot of research to do them justice.)
(*big companies or shows that go on every night will often rotate who plays the leads in each show so that lead people can have a rest, especially for roles with young actors/dancers. Gives more people a chance to star, while making sure they don't get overworked. Also it means I get to make her a lot of outfits from the parts in this show!)

So THIS is going to be her Nightgown dress which she wears for a lot of the production. Making it simple enough to look nightgowny but decorative enough to be a stage
      costume is fun.

    19. Someone please talk me out of my crazy idea. So I own BTSSB's Elizabeth OP, a dress that they've released with Volks for SD:
I own it in pink but the SD ones have only ever been red, so if I want my doll to match me I'll have to make one myself. I've spent the past few days scouring the internet for high-quality images of the SD one and hunting down the lace used on it, and I've found some very close matches from stores based in Japan. The problem is, my local lolita community is having a cinema screening of Kamikaze Girls (the film the above SD is a character in) on September 28th and I have such hubris that I want to try and finish it by then. I haven't even ordered any lace yet!

    20. Rosslynn, any chance of using the trim from the waist for the second sleeve & any that's left becoming a center decoration at the waist?

      • x 1
    21. SilverDawnArrow, have you sewn many Lolita dresses already? Order the trim anyway & start cutting dress parts! Whether it's ready for the event or later because it'll be sweet on her, figure out how much time you've actually got & what will be fun vs stressful. ;}
(Having had many friends exhausted at events after working thru the night to finish a cosplay...)

    22. Thanks- that'd be a good idea. I do like the trim on the empire waist though, so I ended up unpicking the sleeve and now I'm gonna go find something else to use on the sleeves.

    23. I've been on a clothes making spree! I made shorts and a bra for my Bobobie Pandora (completely hidden under her coat), an apron for my Volks Nono (I made her dress some time ago), and harem pants and a vest...thing...for my Dollshe Fashion Grant Phillipe. Oh, and a coat for another doll but I'm still trying to decorate it.

Are the clothes great? No. Do they fit? Mostly! Is there too much black? Definitely, but I got a big bag of various patterned black fabric from the thrift store for like $3. I'm very happy.

I realized that I made almost all the clothes for my fashion sized crew. Probably because their proportions are harder to fit off the rack, so to speak. Next up is my Emperor's casual clothing, or some clothes for his bodyguard. Undecided for now.

    25. Wow, that's crazy!! I wish you luck -- but as backup, maybe you could carry an accent purse that has some different color that matches well with red and pink, or something between those two shades, so it looks like you're all put together anyways?

    26. I really hope you go forward with it! Having seen your recent dress project journal I believe it'll be beautiful, even if not done in time for the screening :)

    27. @Rosslyn ooh, cool! I hope to have a Nutcracker doll someday too, but my sewing is... not there yet :(

    28. I hope you try it anyway! It's fun as a challenge. I'd never made any ballet stuff before this and I've learned how real tutus are made! Youtube is full of cool info.

So that dress? The cursed one? Part of it touched the shaft of my mini iron tool (which is hotter than the tool head) and melted a HOLE in the middle of the skirt.
I have officially redone every part of this dress not once but TWICE.
      CURSED.
      but now we're almost done!

    29. She is so beautiful!!!

    30. Oh no Rosslynn!
The ongoing "new events on the bingo card of life"are getting more unexpected all the time! I'm glad you have enough fabric & patience to persist.

    31. hehe thanks! I still had the bed duster ruffle thing I took this gauzy stuff from, thank goodness. Soon I'll have finished pics!

    33. oh my gosh the skeleton trim is just the cutest thing! It just really suits her witch aesthetic.

This is the finished look (so far) for that Slavic inspired fantasy outfit for my 1/6th Dollzone Little Snow.

    35. @Rosslyn So cute, and so many details at such a small scale!

    36. Sweet! I love her hair and that tiny vest.

    37. I was playing around with scrap fabric and my new 1/6 doll... ended up coming out with a really simply stitched dress but I love how it looks! I really lucked out with the shape of the fabric scrap. The back is less pretty but I've accepted that lol

    38. Thank you! I admit a lot of it is picking stuff that has details already, and taking advantage of them.

THank you! It took me a while to choose a wig but this fone from House By Apple i think it was, worked out.

That is so flippin cute! Love the bubble skirt!

    45. Working on boots for a commission. I think I need to set it aside and work on something else though, since I've been procrastinating it horribly.

    46. Waging war on a sailor blouse for my SDM. Used an old school MSD pattern that was already blouse-y so find I am having to tear apart and cut it down as I go since the newer Volks size doll is slimmer.

    49. Recently I made a corset for my YOSD. I put so much effort into this and I'm really happy with how it came out! I added some brown ruffle trim to the top and bottom (though the bottom is hard to see), and I'm really proud of the beadwork too :D

    50. Just a mod reminder: while this is a place to share one''s work it is also in a discussion area and not a gallery. Please stick to one image per post. If you want to do a whole photo shoot of your recent creations the galleries are a better location.

    51. Is this a new rule?
I know it's one image per post in the Discussions section, but this is the Workshop section and posting a few pictures at once to show different projects or to add close up on details have always been ok before, as far as I know. I've never seen anything mentioned about it and I can't find it in the rules either. Nor is it mentioned at the top of the forum, like it is in the Discussions section.
I can, however find plenty of examples of multiple images per post, going WAY back. I can see how posting several similar images of the same item may be superfluous, but that's not what you are saying, if I understand you correctly.
Is this now true for the entire workshop section?
What about tutorials and project journals?

    52. - these undies are so cute! I have yet to make a couple of those for my dolls :/ DId you use some stretching fabric? Zigzag would suggest yes :P

      - simply adorable!

    53. I used cotton spandex fabric, rather than using a zig zag stitch, I lower the tension a little. My machine works better on heavier weight stretch fabric and I find it easier to work with as it curls less at the edges :)

    56. Not sure if there was ever an answer about that multiple images per post question, but I put my extras in a spoiler to be safe.

I made some pillows for my YOSD! After making an experimental tiny stuffed animal recently, I found that I had a lot of fun with making stuffed things. So, pillows!

    57. Finally finished my first attempt at a lolita-inspired dress for Aurum. The left sleeve needs some repair-the gather at the bottom had its thread pop-but overall I'm pleased. This was something of a personal challenge in that I only used fabric and notions that I already had on hand, to try and start actually using my stash.
